distro hopping
Posted by: inittux - 2011-11-24, 10:25 AM - Forum: General Chat - Replies (7)

In the past year or so I've used several different distro's on my desktop and now I'm currently using SL6. I'm very satisfied with it. However I've been thinking just to get a redhat subscription so I have a way of contributing to Linux. Paying for something I appreciate even though I can get it for free. Just wondering what all of you think about that?It may help me make a final decision. Cuz I've heard over the net if you don't mind paying a subscription go for Redhat, and otherwise go for SL or CentOS.

kvm and virtualbox no network connection
Posted by: inittux - 2011-11-21, 07:36 PM - Forum: Network Problems - Replies (9)

I reinstalled my whole system cuz I wanted some changes. So I reinstalled kvm and installed a virtual pc.

However I do not get a network connection, my virtualpc doesn't get an ip adress. I checked to see if kvm

created a bridge and it did:

virbr0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 52:54:00:FB:2B:21

I tried creating a bridge manually that causing the loss of all my network connections but I made a backup

of the config file luckily. I then tried doing selecting a different virtual network card in kvm for my virtualpc.

Same results. I then thought, well let's try installing virtualbox again and see what happens. So I create

my virtual pc and install a system and I have the same thing, my virtual pc doesn't get an ip. Not in any

network setting. So I figured that the problem is not with kvm and not with virtualbox. But be something

else on my system, but find it strange after a fresh install this happens. I don't want an answer, cuz I'd

like to figure this out myself but just writing it out to think it through. Cuz I want to be able to learn

to fix things myself. So I know it's not the virtual software that's not working right, but have to look

somewhere towards my networkcard/network connection. You can reply for tips, but I'll post as

soon as I get a bit further.

How to rebuild curl 7.22 on latest centos 5.7 linux?
Posted by: linux_noob - 2011-11-15, 02:14 AM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (4)

Hi there.

I am new to linux and i am trying to learn.

I have a web server where I host few of my websites. Recently one of my plugins stopped working nd it was traced to curl problems. This is all I know, the programmer who wrote a script told me I need to rebuild curl,

I am noob to linux and I don't want to outsource this task.

I have done yum update so my centos is up to 5.7 stable

so everything is up to the latest version however cURL wouldn't update past 7.15 version.

I would like to update it to the latest 7.22 stable version.

I searched google half a day today and couldn't find an answer.

One of you experts would you please explain to me how to rebuild curl using the latest release available on the internet ?

Thank you kindly!

what mail service do you use
Posted by: inittux - 2011-11-14, 01:38 PM - Forum: General Chat - Replies (3)

I've been doing up on some reading on email security and I found out that gmail isn't really the best if you want privacy. I use gmail myself, but then I thought I could maybe use pgp or something else. But then I thought it wouldn't be very usefull cuz then all of the people I mail with would have to use pgp. And on the other hand everything online is but at the same time I do want to have some sort of feel of privacy. As in I don't like the fact that gmail scans your email. What email services do all of you use?

Super noob here, trying to build a Kiosk PC
Posted by: atredes - 2011-11-11, 06:44 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (20)

Hello, everyone, I am trying to get started with Linux and this seemed like a good place to get some help without being ridiculed haha.

I actually have never used linux before, so I am a super noob, but I have been reading about it and it is definitely something I want to get into.

My supervisor at work wants to set up a kiosk PC for visitors to use here at our office. After reading about all the options it seems a Linux based kiosk would best suit our needs, but I have no idea to go about setting it up. I was reading about it on this site: http://kiosk.mozdev.org/ but I got a little overwhelmed trying to research everything. I would be extremely grateful if someone could point me to some noob friendly documentation on getting started on Linux. Thanks and I appreciate your time.

 KVM Screenshots SL6
Posted by: inittux - 2011-11-09, 08:38 PM - Forum: Linux - Replies (3)

I decided to play around with KVM on my desktop to see if I could get it to work. Was easier/just as easy as Virtual-box.

You can install it from the standard repositories and it's the new Red Hat standard. I did it with graphical interface since

I'm using my desktop but when I get my server going to try and do it all via de terminal. There's lots of documentation

and features . What do you think?

 grub booting old kernel
Posted by: dalby - 2011-11-08, 10:15 PM - Forum: Kernel Related - Replies (4)

i have updated from debian lenny to debian squeeze,

installed a new (custom) kernel to run vservers.

for some reason grub keeps booting the old kernel (i do not have console access, only ssh)

, it should boot Linux 2.6.32-5-vserver-amd64 but it boots Linux 2.6.18-6-vserver-amd64…

when rebooting after installing the first time, the system hung, and i rebooted and the old kernel was loaded i guess, how to reset?

anyone knows?

Thanks in advance!

 timezones/clock
Posted by: inittux - 2011-11-07, 11:41 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (7)

A while back I set my server time to the right time how they showed it here . I checked some logs and seem like the logs are all one hour off.

So instead of 12.30 it would show 11.30. So I decided I'd set the right timezone. I setup my clock like this:

vi /etc/sysconfig/clock

#ZONE="Europe/Amsterdam"

ZONE="GMT+1"

UTC=true

ARC=false

I rebooted. Didn't see a change

I also tried doing the following:

ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Amsterdam /etc/localtimeStill have the same problem. I tried #ZONE="Europe/Amsterdam"and replacing it by #ZONE="GMT+1" Didn't change anything either, still off by an hour. I'm kind of out ideas and everything I searchin google they all point towards these configuration options.

When I use date it always still shows:

Mon Nov 7 11:44:17 CET 2011

So I'm probably just missing one thing. Cuz CET is Central Eastern time and I need GMT. Will keep search but ideas to help me in the right direction are welcome
