Debian most popular Webserver distro again
Posted by: inittux - 2012-01-10, 07:44 AM - Forum: Linux News - Replies (5)

I came across an interesting article showing the statistics about what distro is the most popular as a webserver. It was CentOS

but just recently Debian took that position back. With Ubuntu in 3rd place but not even close to be being 2nd. I wonder why

Debian has become more popular then CentOS as a webserver and why webmast favorite distros change so quickly. Interesting

to see how there are a variety of linux distros all used as webservers even though I expected before I came across this that most

webservers would be CentOS/RHEL. Interesting how wrong our perception of things can be sometimes. I'm still running SL as

a webserver, and have never used Debian as a webserver before. Does make me curious and thinking of maybe trying debian as

a webserver just to feel and see the differences. What does your webserver run on?

  Munic Linux Migration Success
Posted by: inittux - 2012-01-09, 09:40 AM - Forum: Linux News - Replies (3)

Awesome to hear a story like this that Linux migration from windows to Linux has been a a success. I was thinking now days with so many countries in financial trouble and have to cut down on expenses. Replacing windows with Linux with cut down on quite a bit of expenses. The only downside of it would be that it would take a lot of time to plan and it may cost alot, but it would only be a one time project thing. Once they get it setup and running their expensive would go down when using opensource software and not having to buy windows licenses and alot of other software licenses. For most software you have an opensource alternative and for the ones that you don't. You'll have extra to spend on licenses from where you saved on. And if more governments started doing this there would be more Linux development and eventually there would be an alternative for Linux for most windows software. That way home consumers would feel more free/comfortable to try out Linux and eventually windows would become less needed/necessary than it is today. Only thing is getting used to a new OS takes time. Well that's just my thought of saving money in this financial crisis time.

my notebook Asus Eee 12.1" 1215B-SIV128M
Posted by: inittux - 2011-12-27, 02:58 PM - Forum: General Chat - Replies (2)

I got my notebook running on Debian. Was able to install from usb, that took ages though lol. I have installed the video drivers for the videocard, I got my wireless working.

Only thing not working is my sound which I should be able to get working by installing a backported kernel I was told. Still need to figure that out. And I am not able to play

1080p and 720p files normally. it shows but is extremly slow. I already installed debian multimedia repo and installed multimedia codecs. I did a quick search on the web

and I should be able to play 1080p with the videocard that it has. Any ideas?

fix the Fn Keys on Asus Eee Pc 1015B
Posted by: CellarDweller - 2011-12-27, 06:43 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (4)

Hello!

I've got the Asus Eee PC 1015B netbook and running Fedora 16. And I am facing the following problems:

  • function keys aren't working at all

The Fn-Keys for adjusting speakers, brightness of the screen and such stuff aren't responding at all. They work on the (pre-installed Windows 7) and do what they should do under Open SuSe.

  • sound issues

I had no sound - the system found both sound-devices and the appropriate drivers were loaded. Only in VLC player I was able to get any sound because only there I was able to definitely select *this* or *that* soundcard.

After installing *Battle for Wesnoth* and giving it a frustrated try to play it without sound I suddenly got the whole soundsystem blasting at full level. Now everything works fine - but don't ask me how.

Which is somehow frustrating because I was really trying to figure this out - and then it worked by itself. Which might bear the risk that it also might begone another moment.

  • screen brightness

As mentioned above - I can't adjust the brightness of the LCD screen. I already installed *Jupiter* and it does what it should do, like en-/disabling power-save modes etc, - though the FN keys still don't work. And the screen at full brightness becomes really painful over some time.

I looked-up this issues in different forums and internet-searches, and it seems to be a common problem.

My guess also is that this problems are quite independent from the Desktop Environment - at least they are present in LXDE and XFCE4 and dwm.

So my question is:

where can I adjust the screen brightness via shell?

I don't need to raise or lower it very often, because I really like to work with a dimmed screen, don't watch much video on this and don't work in the graphics field on this netbook.

Thanks in advance for your support and all your efforts!

Kernel Panic boot SL live dvd
Posted by: inittux - 2011-12-22, 09:29 PM - Forum: Kernel Related - Replies (9)

I finally got my netbook. Nice and small. I create a bootable usb using sl live usb creator and I tested it out on my laptop and it boots without any problems. I then tried to boot from my usb on my netbook and I am able to get in to the grub menu and as soon as I select boot from LiveDVD SL starts to load and then I get the error: Kernel Panic - not syncen: Attempting to kill init! I'm pretty sure it's some type incompatible hardware thing. I google all around, but I only found answers like made a new live usb, compiled a custom kernel,(can't do that if my os isn't installed) checking bios settings etc. I'm kindda out of options. Any ideas?
