Looking for the desktop distro that best fits me
Posted by: inittux - 2012-01-23, 09:31 AM - Forum: General Chat - Replies (5)

Lately I've been trying out several Linux distro for my Desktop. These are the ones I've tried so far:

Ubuntu 11.10: Had it running virtually, then tried to install it on my pc. Got it too boot, but after updating and rebooting got stuck at login screen. Having right password the login screen would keep reappearing.

Fedora 16 XFCE: It's nice for a netbook or laptop, but wouldn't like it for my Desktop.

Mint 12: Looks nice, but I'm not really used to gnome3 yet, and you can't create LVM's during normal installation. There is a script you can use to create a lvm during installation but the downside of it is that you can only make one physical volume for it.

CentOS/SL: They are good stable distros but they don't have the latest software if you can live with that and some applications take more time to install/compile/configure than a desktop distro.

Debian: Works great as desktop, but don't like it as much as newer desktop distros.

Possible candidates, see list below.

1. First I'll try to install it virtually to see what installation options I have.

2. Play with it a bit to test it out.

3. If I like it I will install it on my desktop and run it for a few days/weeks.

Please share your experiences with different Linux distros as desktop.

Any other suggestions for desktop? I've been looking at distros from distro watch

but any ones you would personally suggest to try out.

  SOPA video
Posted by: inittux - 2012-01-20, 11:27 AM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

SOPA has nothing much to do with Linux but with free(opensource) internet. Here's a video about SOPA that I found interesting and I hope all Americans vote against it and the rest of the world fight against it.

  Hello

Hi My name is joseph I live in central Ohio and I study network administration and work in IT doing server maintenance. I have been toying with Linux for years but as I get closer to finishing my degree and aquiring more certs it's about time to buckle down and learn *nix. Eventually I'd like to get the CompTIA Linux+ cert. I know a very few comands from getting the Network+ cert but really not enough to run and maintain a linux envioroment. The goal being to dump windows all together and run in Nix.

  apache/mod_ssl problem
Posted by: inittux - 2012-01-18, 10:16 AM - Forum: LAMP - Replies (17)

I removed my ssl options in apache for one of my websites and I changed the port for virtualhost back to 80. I also remove the certificates for feedmebits.nl. I restarted apache but now my website one seem to come online anymore. My other website wors fine, when I try to go to feedmebits.nl via a proxy, I get the following error: Couldn't connect to feedmebits.nl:443: No route to host . Seems like somewhere it's still trying to connect to the ssl port. I've been search and looking over my apache config file. Can't find anything there and I there's nothing installed anymore that has to do with ssl. Any advice to help me in the right direction. My website access.log shows that I did try to connect via a proxy:

but it won't display my site.

  Linux Jobs/employment advice
Posted by: Dungeon-Dave - 2012-01-14, 04:12 PM - Forum: General Chat - Replies (12)

Quote:But I really want to get a job in the Linux field in maybe a

few years and I also want to take that LPI-1 exam. I just think Linux is fun, but at the same time it's annoying when getting stuck on something a long time, but then

again you learn from it.
I honestly feel your have the aptitude and energy to go for an assistant admin position, even if working in a team of sysadmins at a datacentre. You clearly display the ability to research and experiment, and are motivated and passionate about working with Linux - employers favour drive and enthusiasm over skills and knowledge (but lacking the desire to put those qualities into action).

I think you can learn a lot from others on the job - more about why things are done in a particular way, and the responsibilities of a sysadmin, rather than an enthusiast that tinkers without time pressure or any clear specifications to meet.

US Spy Drone switch to Linux?
Posted by: inittux - 2012-01-13, 10:07 AM - Forum: Linux News - Replies (4)

Remember a while back when a US drone crashed? Well the cause of the problem that caused it to crash seems to have

been a malware infection. Here's a picture of the controls is 2009 . Check the middle screen between the two pilots. Recognize the well know windows menu bar? And here's a more recent picture from 2011 The second picture is really a clear picture. But how cool is that :)

  vlc/media bdmv file
Posted by: inittux - 2012-01-11, 05:36 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (2)

I downloaded a bluray disk containing two directories: BDMV and CERTIFICATE. Below that are some more directories.

example: streaming, playlist etc. I can play the files one by one. But I actually want to play it as if it were a disk. Cuz

it's an interactive video type thing where you can click through the menu's. Been looking around

but not been able to figure it out yet.

  BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless netbook
Posted by: inittux - 2012-01-10, 08:52 PM - Forum: Wireless - Replies (15)

I decided to try and install fedora 16 xfce on my netbook and I got it installed. However it wasn't able to detect the wireless so I installed the driver. It's showing up when I run lspci but seems like it's not loaded cuz my network manager isn't detecting anything and when I run ifconfig I have no wlan0 showing up.

Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01)

[root@feedmebits-net ~]# modprobe brcm80211

FATAL: Module brcm80211 not found.

[root@feedmebits-net ~]# iwconfig

lo no wireless extensions.
