Hello!
Posted by: Aripheus - 2012-03-20, 02:48 PM - Forum: Hello - Replies (9)

Hey guys,

my name is Adam and I am new to linux, and when I say new..I mean NEW!!! I've tinkered around with it a little bit, read some online help posts to get some things working... but it was mainly copy paste stuff.... does anyone recommend somewhere I can go to learn what all the commands do??

for instance I have used sudo command before, but don't really know what it means and I wouldn't know how to use it if I needed to unless I was reading it online.

as far as experience, I am in IT support, supporting mac and windows computers both hardware and software, but I want to learn how to use linux and possibly use linux as a server for files, web, and email. right now, I have Ubuntu, is there one that is recommended? I Read that I should start out with fedora though, will it be that much different?

I have been through this site many times before now, I don't know why i just didn't sign up way before this... well anyways, thanks in advance guys/gals!

-Adam

wifi interface wlan0 shows about 10-15% more traffic than VPN ppp0
Posted by: ubunut - 2012-03-10, 07:27 PM - Forum: Network Problems - Replies (1)

I tried doing a search for vpn but it wont let me search under four characters so i will be so bold as to start a new topic.

I've been exploring the wonderful world of linux for a while now and since lately i got myself a vpn connection from ipredator which i use at all times when connected to the internet

I've been doing some scripting to have all relevant processes killed and the network disconnect in case the vpn goes down, i guess i'm just a bit paranoid. But all that works just fine.

Now i've been monitioring traffic on both ppp0 and wlan0 interfaces with this nifty little tool called ifstat.

What i notice is that at any time i am connected and traffic goes through the ppp0 interface i get about 10-15% more through my wlan0 interface. I have no clue where to ask about this and can't find the keywords to google the relevant information.

So, if anyone can help me out here? is it normal to have that much more traffic on the wi-fi than what goes actually through the vpn connection? Is it to do with the fact that the data's being encrypted or something? Anything to make me wiser about it or point me in the direction where i can find more info about this specific situation would be greatly appreciated.

I put a small portion of the output of ifstat here on pastebin : http://pastebin.com/9NEa8Zar

Go easy on me, i know a bit or two about computers but this is completely new to me.

Also, i can't seem to find anything about firewall rules to have a single program/process blocked from using anything but the ppp0 interface, all i can find is allow ip-ranges and open-close ports, anything for dummies on that subject would be most welcome as well

  Screenshots of 12.04 Beta 1
Posted by: hybrid - 2012-03-04, 12:48 PM - Forum: Precise Pangolin (12.04) - Replies (1)

Here's a rather disorganised and random set of screenshots from the beta of Precise Pangolin LTS (12.04), which was released on March 1st, 2012.

<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_03_2012/post-1019-0-20847600-1330864893.png" data-fileid="1351"></a>

A nice touch -- I think the installer detected my location as in the United Kingdom, and pre-filled the timezone and keyboard layout settings.

<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_03_2012/post-1019-0-51192700-1330864938.png" data-fileid="1352"></a>

The desktop

A few new Appearance settings for having a little bit of control over Unity.

<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_03_2012/post-1019-0-04895600-1330865008.png" data-fileid="1354"></a>

The obligatory "here's this site in the target OS" screenshot.

<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_03_2012/post-1019-0-46137400-1330865048.png" data-fileid="1355"></a>

Interesting new privacy preferences, which allow you some control over the information Ubuntu and applications remember about your computing session.

<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_03_2012/post-1019-0-69830900-1330865126.png" data-fileid="1357"></a>

It is a beta OS, so it's not stable just yet!

Updated LibreOffice, RhythmBox as the default music player...

The Software Centre, still looking pretty similar to 11.10.

Need support in setting up ushare for xbox 360
Posted by: abhishek77 - 2012-03-01, 10:25 PM - Forum: Network Problems - Replies (1)

I am unable to setup ushare to work with xbox 360.

I have been following the steps in the link below as well watching some videos on youtube.

http://stevejenkins.com/blog/2011/02...ox-360-or-ps3/

<div><iframe width="480" height="270" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zg6qTL-gvJw?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true"></iframe></div>

But still when i start up the xbox, i cannot see the server name listed under videos. I have named the server Media Server.

After following all steps and running the command ushare -x, it comes with found 199 files and subdirectories but still nothing on the xbox. even tried stopping and starting ushare service on linux machine.

what am i missing out.

Correct. Running along pretty nice. However if I leave firefox open the adobe flash plugin will crash and make the system un responsive. Im gonna close firefox and leave the box running. When I get home Ill see if the system remains stable.
