  Wifi issues
Posted by: swall359 - 2012-06-14, 07:13 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (4)

I am new to linux. I started with running kuki linux from a live CD on an Acer Aspire one. It worked great for what I wanted, which is an OS with minimal apps on install that I can customize as I learn more about linux and surf the web. I chose kuki because its designed specifically for the Acer Aspire one and its SSD hd, and the wifi was said to work "out of the box" (with maybe a little tweaking), which knowing a tiny bit about linux I didnt expect anything to work out of the box.

When I ran it live everything worked out of the box, so I installed it. After install the wifi doesn't work. Half the time it doesn't detect any networks, when it does I cannot connect to WPA secured connection (gets stuck on authorization), sometimes I can connect unsecured for a few minutes before it looses the signal, but it usually get stuck obtaining IP address. It looks like the kernel did not update after install, so I think I'm probly missing some drivers and maybe a bunch of other stuff, I'm really new to this so I don't know what I should have or where to look to see what is there and what is not, I hope someone knows what I mean. I looked thru other forums, this seems to be a common problem for kuki and ubuntu on the acer aspire one, I tried the solutions and they didnt work, but I think those solutions assume you have a LAN connection or something which right now I dont.

some of the solutions I came accross: Putting wireless drivers on a cd and then installing them, I cant figure out how, the "make" commands on the tutorial seem to not work. Someone said to reinstall WICD network manager, I can't figure out how to "reinstall". I tried making an ad hoc connection to another laptop, would not detect. I tried updating on the sketchy unsecured connection but the signal was too weak and it couldnt complete.

Does it seem like my issue could be the update?

how do I update the kuki kernel with no internet connection?

How do I narrow down the problem so I at least know what is not causing it?

Thank you in advance to anyone who helps. If there are answers for me elsewhere on the forum, I apologize for missing them and starting a new topic, please point me to them. I tried to be detailed without writing a novel, I tried linux long ago and got flamed for both, lol. In the meantime I will try and find a wired connection to borrow and see if maybe my wifi card is bad or something. Thanks again.

  Having issues dual booting
Posted by: joe0121 - 2012-06-10, 12:32 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (5)

My system has two 60gig SSD's (among others) I would like to install windows on one and Mint 13 on the other. The windows install needs to be a dynamic disk. I would like the Linux drive to be the first drive in the boot order in the BIOS. (UFI bios in this case). Not sure how to acomplish this. i have mint installed and I installed windows on the second drive but I dont know how to get the linux bootloader see the windows drive. I have complete backups so if It is easier to blow away my installations I will do it. Windows will only get used for Labsim app I need for school and online banking apps so I can scan and deposit checks. I would just use a VM but my wife doesnt like it and I need this to be as transparent to my end user (wife) as possible the dual boot setup will acomplish this.

Anyone able to get Compiz to wrok with mint 13 running the Mate desktop?

everytime I run

Code:
compiz --replace

it starts fine than just simply hangs. System remain responsive and I get no errors and I have let it sit for over an hour. This Machine has a six core amd cpu and 16 gigs of memery with an HD video card with 1 gig of memory so it certainly has the horse power.

Code:
joe-desktop ~ # compiz --replace
Backend     : ini
Integration : true
Profile     : default
Adding plugins
Initializing core options...done

I have to ctrl+c to get my terminal session back.

A Hand-Full of Noob USB load questions
Posted by: Walksouth - 2012-06-06, 04:20 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (9)

So after one year of Win7 use, I went looking at Linux again (I think it was 02 or 03 last time I thought about going that way). After doing alot of reading and forum swiming, I decided to go with the Kubuntu 12.04 64-bit and run it as a "live" OS (first I did a DVD-R then looked into the USB option). The lack of being able to "save" things in the live version turned out to be a small bummer, but I still loved how simple it was to run like that without having to change my harddrive. Let me just stop here for a second to say "High-five Linux community!" So far I love it here. 95% helpful forums. Anywho..........So I did more reading and found info for the "persistant" USB setup. After only a few days of running with it, Im hooked. It runs my Alienware M11X r1 really well. Like to a lvl that I did not expect. So Im here learning but I still have some big-time-noob questions. So here goes......

1). When I look at the Memory settings, it says Swap File NA. Is that just because Im running off a USB?

2). Is there a Gamers Destro? I asked a programer friend that and all he said was "DirectX is evil!" An unclear answer.

3). Will Kubuntu12.04 (or anything like it) run on older computers? (specs below)

P4 2.4Ghz, 512 RAMBUS (yes thats RAMBUS ram) or a AthlonXP2500+, 512 333Mhz DDR"1" both have ATI Radeon 9000 vid

4).Can a SD card with USB reader be used to setup in the same manner that the plain USB drive is? (as in a persistant USB boot)

5). I want to make some USB setups for a few friends (who really dont know computers like I do, got over 10 years in the industry). What would be the best Destro\flavor (KDE ima guess) for the Duh-where-do-I-click person?

Ive tried a few games for this aswell. Altho most look like they were pulled off a Sega Saturn (OpenArena, TORCS and ChromiumB.S.U.), they played very smoothly. Everything else Ive tried has been top notch. WordProcessing, DVDburning, Media palyback, WebBrowsing are all nice to use. I run everything off an Alienware M11x R1 with 4G of ram. Ima also try it on an older (5years) Celeron laptop in the next week (the 32-bit ISO for that).

  Compiling error
Posted by: arctos - 2012-06-05, 08:01 PM - Forum: Compiling - Replies (5)

Hi,

I recently started using linux (three days ago) so please excuse the potentially trivial problem that I can't seem to resolve. I am trying to compile a program called FRANz found here. I asked a few linux users at the university here and they can't seem to get the program compiled. I have also searched using the errors that pop up after running ./configure, and after installing a few packages that I apparently needed and am still at a loss. After running ./configure I get the error config.status: error: cannot find input file: `Makefile.in'. I recently updated the OS from Ubuntu to Mint 13 Maya to see if it was a problem with having a really old OS, that didn't help either.

Looking back up at what gets spit out during configure these are the errors I see:

checking gvc.h usability... no

checking gvc.h presence... no

checking for gvc.h... no

checking for _doprnt... no

For the gvc erros I installed packages graphviz and libgvc5, but they did not change anything.

I can't find much on doprnt, so maybe it is specific to the program I am trying to compile. I have gone throug the conf.log and included what I thought might be relevant. I really appreciate any help anyone could offer me. Let me know if more of the config log would be helpful.

Thanks,

AR

debian librairies install AND xbt trouble connection refused
Posted by: totopizza - 2012-05-25, 12:49 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (50)

hi guys :))))

so, here i am , i hope i finally found the right place for some help,

its been hours and hours am looking for someone to help on my debian vps :)))))

SO, am installing a tracker, xbt tracker,

i dont really know if i installed it correctly, but, seems yes,

seems ! the point is, in fact, i cannot start it, i can see the announce log table is empty,

so i guess i did something wrong,

AND in addtion i got this error message in utorrent :

connection refused by the target machine, arrgghhhhhhhh !!!!!!!

* i checked my firewall, there are no rules, so it does allow all traffic

i went to the xbt forums for help, they told me : go away, its your server configuration,

great help, loll .......

so am here, in the hope someone will help me for real :))))

i use a gazelle frontend, the frontend is running fine as far as i used it ( 2 days )

i looked at many different tutorials up to install and configure xbt tracker,

i installed libraires, put the xbt folder along with my site folders, ....

well.

one fact i see, is this one :::::

======================

SO i found this article there :

http://filesharefrea...a-debian-server

so i ssh this :

cd to the folder where is xbt/build/

and typied this : ./autogen.sh

and the result is this :

./autogen.sh

Running aclocal...

Running autoheader...

Running autoconf...

Running libtoolize --automake...

Running automake...

Running ./configure ...

configure: creating cache config.cache checking for a BSD-compatible

install... /usr/bin/install -c checking whether build environment is sane... yes

checking for a thread-safe mkdir -p... /bin/mkdir -p checking for gawk... no

checking for mawk...

mawk checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes

checking whether to enable maintainer-specific portions of Makefiles... no

checking for g++... g++ checking whether the C++ compiler works... no

configure: error: in `/home/ ............................. xbt/build/xbtt':

configure: error: C++ compiler cannot create executables

See `config.log' for more details

seems something is wrong on my server , right ? c++ compiler ? g++ c++ ?

SEEMS i cannot JUST untar the xbt tracker and put it to my ftp like this ?

i do have to compile it ? but i got no c++ compiler installed, right ?

boiooooooooooooooo am lost guys

i really need help

:)))))))))))))))
