Kinda late but happy new year
Posted by: inittux - 2013-01-21, 11:08 AM - Forum: General Chat - Replies (2)

Better late than never, so Happy New Year :) I haven't been online on the forums much lately, but time has been flying and other things have been keeping me busy. I'm really gonna try to make a change to that this year. And will also be making more time and planning to continue my own learning this year, so much for the new years resolutions

  linux and gaming

Even though we run linux doesn't mean we don't like to game. So here it looks like there's going to be a shift in the linux gaming community. Steam has just launched a beta for a linux steam client. You can sign up here and maybe you'll get chosen to be a beta tester.

Now for linux gaming there are two other options, which are wine and crossover linux. Wine is opensource and supported by the community and crossover linux is based on wine but where you pay for a year subscription/license a year for updates and support. I thought I'd try out crossover linux and see how it runs. Two of my favorite games are UT99 and UT2K4. Here's what I did to get it running via crossover linux.

1. I got a subscription/license, which costs about 51 euros a year and gives you 12 months of support. But you can also first try the trial first.

2. You get the package for your distro. There's packages for debian, redhat, fedora, mandriva, suse. If you don't have the list you can also use a binary to install from. I'm running debian.

3. A package that crossover is dependent on is ia32-libs. Install it: sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

4. Then you can install the crossover package: sudo dpkg -i ia32-crossover_11.2.1-1_amd64.deb

5. It'll start installing and let you know when it's complete.

6. Insert your dvd/cd into your drive. I'm installing UT99/UT2K4. Once it loads, brows into your drive where you will probably find a setup file. Right click and select run with crossover linux.

7. Crossover linux wil start, you can scroll down to Community Supported Applications/Other Application.

8. Next you can select what virtual system you want to run it as. I chose vista. Select it give it a name, and click on install.

9. It'll create your virtual bottle as they call it and you will get a a flash error(at least for my install). You can click on autofix and an installation wizard should start.

10. After this you should get a screen where you can click on Install and the rest is pretty much following the game installer wizard.

11. After install is complete, you can go to your menu, and you will have a new menu option called "Windows Applications" Here your game is installed and you can open it and run your game.

12. Your game wil start and you can set your video settings to match your screen size.

Now startup TeamSpeak and startup UT99/UT2K and have some fun [img]<___base_url___>//public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.png[/img]

Which Linux distro is best for a web server
Posted by: wastedhalo - 2012-10-17, 11:25 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (4)

Hello,

I have never used Linux before but I'm going to be getting a Linux VPS for hosting because some of the PHP applications that I use don't run very well on my windows sever.

The choices that I have are CentOS, Debian and Ubuntu

I have searched the net to try and figure out which is better but everything I read pretty much says that it comes down to what your comfortable with and have the most experience with.

I have no experience so my priority is which is best for a web server but this will also be a good opportunity for me to get familiar with Linux.

I would appreciate your opinions,

Thanks.

  Very Odd issue

Linux mint 13 "Mate"

I have an AMD 6 core CPU but in system monitor it only reports as 1 cpu. It is also heavily loaded at all times over 15 percent at a minimum, before it would show each core and on an idle system It would be odd to see a core jump over 5 percent. So it seems like the system is running on only one core. I have also tried a fresh install.

What are some steps I should take before I go to another distro to see if the problem persist and start wonder if my CPU/Sysboard has gone bad.

output from uname -a

Code:
Linux mint 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:39:51 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linu

MHDDFS tips on "JBOD" and Breaking RAID5
Posted by: chj - 2012-08-26, 11:56 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (2)

I need some comments in regars to my NAS. I have a Linux Server running Ubuntu 10.04 (may upgrade) and I have a RAID5 for my storage aray, it consits of 4 x 1.5 TB HDDs. OS is running on a seperate disk and I have a 1 TB USB drive that is currently empty.

I am thinking of "destroying" the RAID 5, to gain additional storage space, and start using MHDDFS to mount multiple drives too one mount point for a "large array". Today I loose 1 x 1.5 TB diskspace the the RAID 5. I do not want to run 1 large volume, because if I lose 1 disk, I lose it all.

Any comments in regards to using MHDDFS? I have never tried it before.

Also, any comments in regards to breaking a raid5 using that is setup with MDADM.

My plan is to:

1. Move 1 TB of data off the 4 TB raid 5

2. Remove 1 of the drives from the RAID5

3. Format the "broken" drive

4. Move 1.5 TB off the degraded RAID5

5. Reshape the RAID5 with 3 drives

6. Remove 1 of the drives from the "new" RAID5

7. Format the 2nd "broken" drive

8. Move 1.5 TB off the new degraded RAID5, which should be empty

9. Format the remaining 2 drives

10. Mount all drives using MHDDFS

Questions:

A. Is my plan viable (assumbing that I have enough data space available)

B. Am I risking all the data by breaking the drives (assuming no HW failures)

C. Comments in regards to MHDDFS

D. Can I mount multiple drives, with data, using MHDDFS to one mountpoint?

Any views and comments?

BTW: I do know that I will not have any redundancy any more, but the main point is not to lose ALL data if A SINGLE drive fails.

Thanks.

  Vacation and more

I've been on vacation and been busy with some other stuff so that's why the news section has been kind of quiet. I hope to be starting to write news articles again beginning of next month. Hope all of you have had a good vacation or if not just had time to relax! [img]<___base_url___>//public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.png[/img]

  Media/File Server
Posted by: WyzrdX - 2012-07-19, 03:22 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (13)

Hello all. I am recently returning to Linux after about a 10 year absence. I have not kept up with development except through various articles.

Here is my plight.

I have searched and there are really no topics that actually fit what I am looking for. And google seems to bring me here time and time again.

I dont want a dedicated NAS OS. I want to be able to do other things with the system on occasion, not continuous, i.e. development, etc.

I am looking to set up a home NAS/media/file/backup server. I am not really asking for Distro advice as I am going to use CentOS.

I am running it on

Gigabyte GA-H61N-USB3 1155 ITX with Intel Pentium G630T (35W CPU)

8 GB DDR3 1333

Perc 5/i w/ 4 WD RE4 1TB Dirves.

Here is what will be on the network.

1 MBP (heavy use) with OSX 10.7 maybe upgrade to 10.8

1 Windows 7 Laptop (wifes mostly for internet FB stuff)

1 Xeon Workstation with OSX/ WIndows7/ Fedora 15

1 iPad (internet and file sharing)

1 Kindle Fire (internet use only)

2 Android Phone (mostly using internet, no file sharing)

1 Sony BP-S580 DLNA capable Blu-Ray

1 Xbox 360

Mostly This will be for streaming files and media in the network but I am also returning to school to get another degree. (Programming this time versus current Admin Degree. ) So I will be accessing files remotely.

The reason I am here is to find out what packages should I grab. I have a static IP with 2 firewalls but want to access files etc.

I want as secure as possible so VPN is a good place to start.

SFTP for letting a friend or iPad access

media server for itunes files as well as other media.

Samba of course.

And anything else you can think of that will help.

I tried this same question at 2 other sites and got the general consensus response WHS. I DONT want M$. I have it because I work with it and I am tired of it. Windows 7 is the last M$ OS I will run. Although OSX is my OS I use the most. But I am not a FANBOY either.

Any ideas help or corrections please feel free. Even criticism is welcome, constructively for a 2nd time n00b.

  has gnome finally relinquished ?
Posted by: anyweb - 2012-06-30, 10:30 PM - Forum: Gnome - Replies (14)

I did an update today on my fedora 16 laptop and after a reboot i noticed that Gnome is not looking like it has since well.. since they changed to the new format. It's actually refreshing to see that it's usable again, i can minimize windows and so forth...

so does this mean that Gnome is listening to people or is it just a quirk in the update i got ?

see screenshot..
