Linux Noob with Mint Olivia Cinnamon installed on Sony Vaio P-Series... HELP!
Posted by: EasyE209 - 2014-02-15, 06:05 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (2)

Hi all,

I am completely new to Linux, but have some how managed to install (from USB) Linux Mint Olivia Cinnamon onto my Sony Vaio VGN-P11Z, which I am aware is a somewhat awkward, niche piece of hardware at the best of times.

My aim is to optimise it a bit and then install a few bits of software. It's rather laggy at the mo, and I'm pretty sure I need video drivers for the GMA 500 graphics. How do I install drivers?! I'm reading webpages talking about 'Additional Drivers' in 'Admin', which aren't even there on my install. :/

Is there somewhere I can learn the basic of driver installs etc for Linux, and this version in particular. I'm not having too much luck in my web searches.

Sorry for waffling.

Cheers!

  Gnome and KDE conflict
Posted by: DamagePlanX - 2014-02-11, 09:41 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (1)

Hi

I installed KDE on a box that had gnome running already.  Now I've got some weird issues going on.  I'll try and give as much detail as I can.

I recently spun up a Debian 7.4 box and changed my sources to jessie.  Then I ran apt-get update, apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade.  Once up to date I ran apt-get install kde-full.  At the end of that install I was prompted to choose my default login manager so I chose kdm because I wanted to switch to KDE exclusively.

Once I rebooted neither desktop launched automatically I got some errors about dependencies so I ran apt-get upgrade -f.  After another reboot my machine boots into gnome but there are serious graphical glitches and some items and text aren't appearing.  I think this is due to both shells running at once.

How can I get my machine to boot into kde on startup?

How can I fully remove gnome once that's done?

Thanks and please let me know if you need additional info.

EDIT: I got into KDE by switching sessions but I've still got some graphical glitches.  How do I make sure gnome isn't running and as above, ideally remove it completely?

Problem installing Fedora 20 from USB media
Posted by: anyweb - 2014-01-17, 01:01 PM - Forum: Fedora 20 - Replies (14)

I downloaded Fedora 20 from here, created the USB media using the liveusb creator and then started the install, it wouldn't verify my installation source (usb) and i couldn't install. I thought my HASH/md5sum was bad so i checked it. The sha 256 matched.

<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_01_2014/post-1-0-57612500-1389964457.png" data-fileid="1406"></a>

Next I tried to input an alternative location, I chose the following as I was installing on older hardware (32bit only),

http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/l...0/i386/os/

this allowed the installation to continue, so I'm posting this here incase it helps others

cheers

Hi Everyone

Been Dabbling with linux for some years now, with the exception of the "Dreaded", and "avoided at all costs" forays into the Terminal, I can navigate folders/files and perform updates and basic stuff, but when it comes to things like compiling software or re configuring hardware.........oh  dont know, as soon as go there it just all seems to go tits up of course I  suppose it doesnt help that I'm mildly Lesdyxic as well I do try, but usually things either grind to a halt and then Nothing,   or it breaks big time, and i have to plump for a re-install and start over   after frequenting other forums and the IRC networks with requests for help, and finding that I usually get either Ignored, or someone just posts hundreds of lines of code without even a explanation of how, what, when, or why,   somewhere along the line i just became very dissolusioned with it all, and it seemed to me, that if you didnt know everthing about linux...."Tuff go back to window"   and if you did then hey "welcome to the club."

Cue Linux Noob, well here I am throwing myself at your mercy in the hope that i can finally master more than the GUI

squid proxy- aloow a site to go directl to internet,HELP!
Posted by: adam2k - 2013-05-27, 08:06 AM - Forum: Security and Firewalls - Replies (1)

hello, i need to make a site go directly to internet
without squid. The reason i need this. Since a school purchased full features from a
website. they opened the full features through their public ip.
The issue when using squid proxy users cant access full featured only demo.
if users configure their browser not to use squid proxy they can access full features
in the site.
i tried edit squid config and put these 2 lines but it didnt help, to allow this site
to go directly to internet :

acl direct-connect dstdomain *.sodmaya.co.il
cache deny direct-connect

acl sodmaya dstdomain .sodmaya.co.il
always_direct allow sodmaya

How can i solve this issue ? any ideas?

  Terminal commands?.....
Posted by: ultranoob - 2013-05-17, 03:02 AM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (8)

Greetings! This is my first post

Soo, where to begin?

I'm relatively new to Linux, I have toyed with it a few times in the past. But this time around I'm determined to make the effort to become a life long user.

Sadly I'm one of those people thats completely stuck in the Windows mindset so as you can imagine, right now I'm finding one or two things a little tricky, but I'm getting there slowly.

Im sure over the coming days/weeks/month/years I'll have lots more questions for you all, but right now just a quick simple one.

I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 (not sure if this makes a difference, although I'm sure you'll tell me if it does or not) I got the terminal open and muddling my way through the commands to navigate through directories (folders in windows speak lol) now much like the windows dos prompt and dos of long ago, I worked out you can change directories using "cd (insert name of directory)" but what I would like to know is how to I change back to the directory I was in previously. To illustrate what I mean, in a dos prompt I would type cd files-here and it will go to that directory then if I want to go to a sub directory I would while in the files-here directory type "cd more-files-here" but then if I want to return to the files-here directory I would simply type "cd.." to go back. I quickly realised this is not the case in a linux terminal. Could anyone tell me how I would navigate to that previous folder. Also if there are any good terminal tutorials I could be linked to to read up on what I'm doing I would be most greatful :)

Thanks in advance.

  Just starting linux

Hi,

I was wonder if the following tasks can be accomplished before I start installing a linux distro.

Task one:

I believe linux doesn't have separate drives, like windows where there're different logical/physical drives.

I currently have :

1x Samsung SSD - 128 GB

2x WD HDD - 1 TB & 600 GB

Is it possible to link all three hard drives into one main hard drive? (I believe this would be all under one root.)

Task two: (Need opinion)

I play games from time to time, so I would be using virtual box to play these games.

or

should I use daul boot:

SSD - I will install windows.

HDD- Have linux installed.

Task Three:

I want to share videos on network. (In windows it is called Network Drive)

Is this possible?

P.S Is Linux good for watching video in HD (720p, 1080p, 1080i) (m2ts, ts, mkv,)?

-----------------------------Off topic-------------------------

What distro & certification is good for network administrator?

I heard that Red Hat Certification is the best one to get.

I'm guessing Fedora should be a good distro to be using?
