Starting the GUI (Gnome) |

I installed Cent OS 5.7-i386 server
and from the text console I start the GUI (Gnome if i understand correctly ) by typing "startx".
If this is the correct way of starting the GUI, If so I have two dumb Qs.
1 Is there a way to get it 2 start straight
into the GUI ?
2 Where the hell is the shut down or restart in the GUI?
All can find is a suspend button.
Thanks 2 all:)

Hey, I'm really newish to linux, I used redhat for six months, six years ago. Needless to say, my linux-fu was always a bit spare and now its spare and rusty.
I got a box without a use, and I thought hey, it would be nice to have a minecraft server. A friend of mine said that once I got the box capable of having ssh access he'd finish setting it up. Well, spent the last two days with a fresh install of ubuntu server x64 11.10 relearning enough to make this work. I installed openssh, added a ssh list to iptables, port forwarded 22 to the box... and failed miserably to log in from my home box to this pain in my neck. Connection Refused every time.
Its starting to feel like I'm woefully ignorant.. Any help would be very appreciated.

Hi there,
In case you can’t tell I’m new to Linux.
I am trying to setup my own web server with Kloxo
(A cpanel alternative).
I installed Cent OS 5.7-i386 server, and ran the GUI
(startx) and all went well.
But when I ran the updates and restarted the PC and go to
Start the GUI I just get a blank screen.
I have done some reading on all the forums out there, but far
I have had no luck.
Can still use the Command Prompt (if you call it that in the Linux’s
World?) But would like to use the GUI. (Bit like using DOS instead of windows
And I’m over those days lol).
The hardware I am using to test this on is
Dell Optiplex 745 2.0GHz core 2 duo
1 GB Ram
40 GB hard drive
DVD Rom
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3000
Thanks to all. :)

Linux/Virtualbox |

Something I haven't been able to figure out cuz I've had this with all linux distro's. I use virtualbox to make/test/learn so it doesn't have effect on
my host pc. Every time I create a virtualbox seems like my whole system has a temp freeze until and then doesn't respond to anything when it's start
to create the disk. Once it's creating the disk I can do normal stuff again but it sometimes has hickups as in it freezes for a few minutes and then it
continues again. This is very annoying and don't really understand why. I know it's not my hardware because my hardware should be able to handle
any OS easily and it's only during this process it acts like this. I've have this with Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, and Fedora, no matter what hardware
there was is in the pc. Any ideas?

Migrating configs in uBuntu |

Okay, here's the deal: I'm installing a new ubuntu box (same version as another) and I want to migrate menu settings from one to the other. So a coupla questions:
1. how do I "dump" a copy of the menu items? I want to form a checklist of applications etc.
2. How can I copy over the menus from one to another? I gather that this will probably involve copying over .gconf dir from one box to the other, and know that if I don't have the apps actually installed then I'll be creating a shortcut/icon for something that doesn't exist.
However, I'm going to ensure my output of "dpkg -l" matches between machines to confirm I have all the right stuff installed - I just want a quick way of copying over desktop configs (compiz settings, menus, etc) from one to the other.
Any ideas, chaps?
