  Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) released
Posted by: hybrid - 2011-10-13, 03:36 PM - Forum: Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) - Replies (7)

Quote:"There is nothing like a dream to create the future." - Victor Hugo

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce Ubuntu 11.10, code-named

"Oneiric Ocelot". 11.10 continues Ubuntu's proud tradition of

integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies

into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.

For PC users, Ubuntu 11.10 supports laptops, desktops and netbooks

with a unified look and feel based on an updated version of the

desktop shell called "Unity", which introduces specialized "Lenses".

Finding and installing software using the Ubuntu Software Centre is

now easier thanks to improvements in speed, search functionality

enhancements, and usability improvements. Aside from updates

on the performance side, it's also more aesthetically appealing.

Ubuntu Server 11.10 has made it much easier to provision, deploy,

host, manage, and orchestrate enterprise data centre infrastructure

services with the introduction of "Orchestra". The Juju technical

preview allows service developers to describe the deployment and

scaling requirements of their applications, in order to simplify

and enhance the dialogue between developers and operations teams.

For those working on the ARM architecture, a technical preview is

also provided for the ARM server.

Read more about the new features of Ubuntu 11.10 in the following

press releases:

I'm excited to take a look at the new Ubuntu and upgrade my Ubuntu-running systems that are currently on 11.04!

  backup/restore remotely

I'm looking for some different ways to backup/restore files from a remote server that I incase I mess up something really bad.

I'll be able to restore instead of having to do a full reinstall. I'll check google later.

Playdeb - easy game-playing for ubuntu
Posted by: Dungeon-Dave - 2011-10-11, 06:08 AM - Forum: Games in Linux - Replies (3)

I've been playing around with playdeb.net, a way of downloading and installing games via a one-click method.

[Image: 149_t.png][Image: 166_t.png]

If you follow the instructions, either:

  • configure your repos and install the GPG key

  • install a .DEB package containing all the repo information

... then any game on that site can be played with the "install it now" button at the bottom of each screenshot, which seems to launch a browser plugin that calls apt against a specific package.

(I'm not sure how it achieves this - although seeming easy to use, I can't find a way to apt-get any of the games normally.)

Just thought the details may be useful for any Debian/ubuntu users wanting a few games.

  disadvantages/advantages of a mac/macosx
Posted by: inittux - 2011-10-07, 09:37 AM - Forum: General Chat - Replies (5)

I'm not a mac person, but I'm just wondering what the advantages and disadvantages for a mac. I can only think of a disadvantage.

Mac is expensive, for the same money you buy a mac you can buy a pc with better hardware specs. But macosx does look really nice,

but on the other hand who cares about looks if you can do all the stuff you need/want to do? And how different is it using the macosx

terminal from using a linux terminal? And really don't feel like learning a whole new os while I'm still learning linux, even though mac is

unix based too it would think it isn't that much different?

Current flavor = Ubuntu, interested with Debian, mainly because of ".deb" feature.

I'm sure all of us have read it in the news already. Even though it's not about linux and I'm not an apple person, I thought it'd be good

to have a moment of silence for Steve Jobs here on the forum too. RIP Steve!!

USB Wireless Help for a complete Noob
Posted by: moransj - 2011-10-05, 12:30 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (2)

I am a complete noob so please bare with me for anyone that is willing to help. I am an experienced Windows and MacOS user and have a network with 5 pcs in my home. I have a machine that crashed and I don't have the XP discs so I decided to try Linux. I loaded Fedora 15 up and I am now trying to get network internet access via wifi. I have a Belkin N150 router that I would like to get running. I did some googling and found that I need the rt2870 drivers (I think). I went to Ralink and downloaded these drivers but have no idea how to proceed. I am used to working on Macs/PCs with executable files to load drivers.

lsubs command generates: 050d:945a Belkin Coomponents

uname -r generates: 2.6.38.6-26.rcl.fcl5.i686

I checked quite a few forums and there are a lot of answers but they all use a huge amount of Linux jargon that I do not understand. If anyone is willing to lend me a step by step hand I would be forever in your debt.

The Fedora PC is not hardwired to the network so I will need to 'sneaker net' any required files to get it running until I can get this wireless card working.

Thanks so much.

Scott
