  intel 536ep
Posted by: starrwarz - 2006-07-30, 12:50 AM - Forum: SUSE - No Replies

O.K. I just got my graphics up and running in OpenSUSE, and got everything going great except for the modem driver (chipset Intel 536ep). I have dialup (no broadband or DSL), and while I can get OpenSUSE to recognize my modem, it won't install (I guess it's missing some packages it needs). I tried compiling my own kernal from the driver chipsets listed at Intel (both the latest OpenSUSE one and a generic Linux one), but none worked. Any suggestions please. Thanks in advance.

Help me choose my distro for a multi server
Posted by: TheChihuahua - 2006-07-29, 06:37 AM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (4)

I recently got an old PC for free (not too bad though, 1.2ghz amd 40gb hd and a decent video card, but thats not the point) It currently runs windows me but I think that linux could do better (I tried DSL on it and it was much much faster). Here is what I want to do. I want to have it be a fileserver (for some extra storage on my ibook) and ftp server (for downloads from either a direct connection to the ftp or from links from my...) webserver with PHP to really show off some new design ideals I have bouncing around in my head. Windows me is working OK as a fileserver and ftp server but the copy of windows is pretty screwed up (person randomly deleated some things and a microsoft update screwed it up even more, although it still boots and runs fine) and I get a error message when trying to install apache (If I cared I could fix the problem or reinstall me but I don't care)

So now what I want to know is which distro would be best to do these things, and can I get it to share the disks (like my ME currently is doing). Also, when can I get some complete noob help (I coudlent figure out how to get Samba to work)

Also, what software do you suggest to maintain the system and possible allow me to controll it from my mac so I don't have to hook it up to a monitor anymore.

  can't get monitor/video card/whatever to work
Posted by: starrwarz - 2006-07-29, 04:05 AM - Forum: SUSE - No Replies

Well, I just tried installing OpenSUSE 10.1. I have a custom-built PC consisting of the ASUS P5N32 Sli-Delux motherboard, an Intel Centrino D Duo Dual Core Processor (3.0 gHz), an NVIDIA GeForece 7300 GS graphics card, a Digimon HR + 70 - monitor (tried both that and the closest VESA configuration), 1 GB DDR2 SDRRAM (just one Dimm, though, though that shouldn't make a diference in this case) and of course, a copy of X86 Architecture OpenSUSE 10.1. The problem is that when I click on test Video settings during the hardware configuration in YaST (still during installation, haven't logged in yet), it won't work. My monitor just turns off. When I turn it on, all I see is what looks like an out-of-focused/scrambled TV station (only no guessing about images) and the big Unusable Signal thing built into my monitor. This also occurs should I just decide not to test configuration and attemtp to go things the way they are and try to log into Linux via GNome. Is this a monitor issue, or a graphics card issue. I have a copy of the graphics card driver downloaded and on a seperate disk, if that might help, but I'm not familiar with how to go about uninstalling the driver (if my driver is corrupt or something) from my OpenSUSE DVD and reinstalling the one I downloaded. Thanks in advance for any help.

  Torrent/P2P question
Posted by: signmeuptoo - 2006-07-26, 09:51 PM - Forum: Network Problems - No Replies

I get an error while trying to use kTorrent. Under: "Status" I get: "Invalid Response" under the Tracker heading.

Do I need to set up my SuSE firewall somehow to allow P2P programs? If so, how? I know what to do in Windows but not in Linux. MUCH Thanks for any help.

  Hotkeys (Multimedia Keyboard)
Posted by: manikfox - 2006-07-26, 01:18 AM - Forum: Printers, Scanners and Other Hardware - No Replies

I've been trying for a while now to set up the multimedia keys with lineak or just even using XMMS built in support but nothings worked. I used the command in the terminal "showkey" which allows me to see what the key codes are for each keys pressed, but when I put them in the xmms plugin and enabled the plugin, they didn't work.

I just want to be able to use my media keys, Play/Pause, Next and Back on any music player (preferably Rhythmbox)

I'm using Fedora Core 5.

Thanks.

  Hard Drive Problem
Posted by: manikfox - 2006-07-26, 01:14 AM - Forum: Filesystem Management - Replies (3)

I just partitioned my second slave IDE HD from NTFS to ext3 and moved all my files... when I restarted Linux couldn't find the Hard Drive, it's not under /dev/ at all. I checked in the bios and its still there, some I think it has to do with the way I partitioned it... I just used mkfs.ext3 -b 4096 /dev/...

Please Help!
