  Top, configure it
Posted by: qstraza - 2006-05-07, 01:01 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (3)

Hi

I wasnt totaly sure where to ask this, under which section, i hope i didnt go under wrong section ;)

And im sorry if there is already topic about "top", search doesnt allow to type only 3 letters :/

So my question is how to configure top so that users sees only thiers processes and not from entire system

I have shell on freebsd and when i type top i see only my processes.

But on my server (slackware 10.1 2.4.29) i see processes for all users...

  Thunderbird Installtion
Posted by: mizzy - 2006-05-07, 12:39 PM - Forum: Compressed Files - Replies (3)

I have done a search, but I can't find what I want. I want to install thunderbird on FC4 and I have downloaded the linux version from:

[/url][url=http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.h...ux%E2%8C%A9=en-US]http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.h...ux〈=en-US

I can't find a rpm for this and have to install the .tar.gz version.

The normal way that I go about to install a program is:

* cd /home/mizzy

* tar -xvzf thunderbird-1.5.0.2.tar.gz

* cd thunderbird

* ./configure && make && checkinstall

But the ./configure step doesn't work because I don't think that there is a configure file in there o_O

Code:
bash: ./configure: No such file or directory

I have gone to the read me file, but it directs me to their webpage which I can't find help for linux installtions [img]<___base_url___>/uploads/emoticons/default_dry.png[/img]:(

All I can seem to do, is extract it, but not install it. Any idea's guys?

  Accessing windows shared folder
Posted by: mizzy - 2006-05-06, 11:42 AM - Forum: Network Problems - Replies (2)

I have a shared folder on my desktop (which is on windows) that i want to view on here. It has been done previously on this laptop when it was running windows and it ran successfully.

On here I have gone to network > windows network > and that is blank o_O

So then I have go to Connect to server > entered the service type as windows share desktop ip which was 192.168.0.3 and I put the shared file name. This did find it and make a connection, but the folder appears as empty on here. It contains a few images in it and it shows up on my desktop.

Any idea's why its hiding the images? well everything o_O

  Slight problem with installing GNOME Commander
Posted by: mizzy - 2006-05-05, 04:35 PM - Forum: Compressed Files - Replies (15)

I've downloaded gnome-commander-1.1.7.tar.gz from [/url][url=http://www.nongnu.org/gcmd/]http://www.nongnu.org/gcmd/ which is a file manager program.

To install I have done;

Downloaded to desktop then cut & past it to my home folder (I didn't know where else to install it :/ )

Then I did;

  • cd /home/mizzy

  • tar -xvzf gnome-commander-1.1.7.tar.gz

  • cd gnome-commander-1.1.7

  • ./configure && make && checkinstall

After the last step, I get this error message in terminal:

Code:
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
See `config.log' for more details.

..any idea's why? I did look in config.log but couldn't really make head nor tail of it. Below is what config.log says...

Code:

running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

  Dual booting
Posted by: chedabob - 2006-05-04, 03:01 PM - Forum: Filesystem Management - Replies (1)

Basically, i want to have a dual boot with windows and linux. now with suse, i take it i need to install windows first, then the GRUB bootloader will find windows?

now to my next problem. ive had problems installing mythtv. i always get a connect to database error in the setup. this is with suse. is there a linux distro out there, thats is well used, easy to install myth/comes preinstalled with myth, and has an update system like synaptic or yast? im a noob to linux and ive only just got used to using suse. in previous experience, ive not liked aptitude for getting apps. does knopmyth come with a GUI package downloader? or mythdora?

just to recap, i deffo want windows installed, and i want to be able to use mythtv. im willing to dual boot knoppmyth with suse just to get tv functions. but id rather just have everything tidy into one linux package.

thanks

Makefile.inc:95: *** /lib/modules/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5/build is missing, please set KERNELPATH.  Stop.
[root@localhost madwifi-ng]#

I tried a bunch of stuff and still no luck. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  make install to /usr/local/bin
Posted by: Black Ghost - 2006-05-04, 05:38 AM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 5 - Replies (8)

Well, I decided to be adventurous and install something from source. While Fedora's not a source-based distribution, I know, I've found some things work better when compiled from source.

Specifically, I'm speaking of Wine, which I decided to compile from source from someone's recommendation. I downloaded the source tar.gz, extracted it, followed the directions to install, and it seemed to work perfectly. Unfortunately, after the installer copied all the compiled files to their default directories, I couldn't get Wine to work as a normal user. As root, no problem, but as a user, it refused to work.

When I found the executables, I found they'd been put in /usr/local/bin. That seems right, because I read or heard somewhere that it's the default directory for compiled software, or something like that. But it doesn't seem to be working for me.

So what should I be doing or changing here? And also, just randomly, why is there no useradd utility?
