kda (or X) api porting from win32
Posted by: dspln - 2006-02-12, 06:52 PM - Forum: Xorg Problems - Replies (5)

I am moving a non-C app (smalltalk) from windows to linux.

Windows has win32 api functions for a lot of things - in particular, window management.

For example, if I have a window's handle, I can SetWindowPos, FlashWindow, GetWindowText, etc.

To get all window handles: EnumWindows

Currently I am trying to figure out how to move windows (programatically) to a specific desktop, and to determine the available desktop size (window size when maximized: the screen size - kicker panels).

In smalltalk, accessing the win32 api's is done by loading a dll ('user32.dll' 'kernel32.dll' 'winmm.dll' 'gdi32.dll' 'psapi.dll' 'advapi32.dll' 'ole32.dll'), then calling the exported function.

Smalltalk provides similar for linux - the 'oracle connect' use 'libclntsh.so'.

What is the general way to do these types of things in KDE/X

Any web sites you can recommend? developer.kde.org didn't really help, but then again, I don't really know what to look for :(

I think maybe libkdeui.so may have what I am looking for, but I didn't see any libkdeui.h - wth?

I successfully created Home.lnk and I now have a Home icon on my desktop :)

table Icon

Caption: Home

Command: rox

Icon: /home/ikaro/.idesktop/home.png # the image to be used as an desktop icon

end

"Do the same for the other icons you want."

But when trying to make a custom icon/shortcut to xmms for example I get nothing.

table Icon

Captian: xmms

Command: rox

Icon: /usr/whereever/my/xmms/icon/is.png

end

After I < nohup idesk > /dev/null & > it doesn't show up on the desktop :(

I followed the instructions on the HOWTO Fluxbox - Icons using iDesk and I can't find any other documentation, not even on their homepage. Am I doing something wrong like perhaps the Command: ?

  Can't Install Linux
Posted by: iv76erson03 - 2006-02-11, 01:04 AM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - No Replies

I'm trying to install Kubuntu on a secondary machine to give it a test run. Problem is my computer keeps locking up on the install. It always locks up on the "Creating ext3 file system / in partition #1 of IDE1 slave" part. Funny thing is, one time it will lock up on 22% the next time it lock on 53%, etc. I've tried 3 times and haven't gotten past this.

I tried a Unbuntu disc i made before this and it did the same thing. Any ideas? Also, what should I be selecting on the menu where it asks how i want to partition the drive? I don't see NTFS or FAT32 so i'm lost. Thanks in advance.

  Changing Resolution
Posted by: Navrax - 2006-02-10, 06:23 PM - Forum: Xorg Problems - Replies (9)

My resolution sometimes goes from 800x600 to 1024x768 (Prefurably 1024x768). I've rebooted a bazillion times to see if it would magically change my resolution back to the way it once was (1024x768). I was told that if I used ctrl shift + it would increase the resolution. Is this true? If not, are there other ways?

  KwikDisk and KFreeDisk
Posted by: kingttx - 2006-02-09, 10:42 PM - Forum: Mandriva - No Replies

This little tutorial took a little digging, and my thanks to the folks from the kde-devel list for answering some questions.

Here are a couple of nice tools to both mount/unmount drives, and to monitor space on those mounted drives. Now, this does not surpass the fstab, so if a device does not have "users" in the options for that device, a normal user still cannot use this tool to mount/unmount a drive...excellent for the system.

I hope you can use this.
