  My PHP/MySQL RSS Generator
Posted by: hybrid - 2005-11-29, 09:00 PM - Forum: LAMP - Replies (5)

I have created a GPL'ed PHP RSS generator. It accepts input from a MySQL database and dynamically generates a feed for you. It's quite simple, but it's the first GPL thing I've ever made, so I guess all the good projects start from here ;)

The whole story about my RSS generator is on my blog and the source is downloadable here.

I'm sorry, this is the best I've given back to the open source community as yet, and it's not exactly complicated to build (especially for all you really clever people on these forums). :)

Built in SUSE 10 on Apache 2.0.54, PHP 5.0.5 and MySQL 5, but should work on most Web Server/PHP/MySQL installations.

  User and Group Administration

This is by no means a guide to Linux security, but this will get you started in administering users and groups in Mandriva. You'll want to know a little about user and group permissions before heading into this how-to, but you can still use this to add a new user or group.

Enjoy!

  Howdy
Posted by: Jeff - 2005-11-24, 12:55 AM - Forum: Hello - Replies (1)

Howdy Yall,

I am a Linux "noob" but am hoping that I can learn it pretty fast. I am proficient in Microsoft networking and am certified in many areas but I would like to get away from the Microsoft monopoly on my business network. I am hoping to learn enough about Linux to migrate our website from IIS to Apache and to use Linux to run additional file servers. I may also use Linux to take over as the primary print server on our network but that is not a priority right now. I currently have no plans to migrate our domain off of Active Directory but I am not ruling that out for the future. Upgrade costs are so darned expensive, I may have to consider it at some point.

I am currently using Fedora Core 4 as a learning tool on my home computer and test computers at work. I like what I have seen so far and seem to be picking it up pretty quickly. I already have a functioning Apache web server on one of my work test computers. I got it installed and configured Sunday evening. Not bad considering the first time I ever sat down with Linux was last Saturday.

I have read through some of the posts here and have learned a good bit. I have also "googled" a lot of info lately. Linux seems to be very promising for my needs. I hope to hang out here a good bit and pick up more info.

Thanks from Texas,

Jeff

  USB only partially working
Posted by: Jeff - 2005-11-24, 12:46 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (1)

I have recently installed Fedora Core 4 on my home computer as a dual boot system so that I can play with and learn Linux. So far, I have liked what I have seen and the more I see, the more I like it. However, I have one problem that I haven't been able to "google" an answer to.

My computer has USB ports on the rear and on the front. All the ports work but certain devices will only work in certain ports.

For example, my mp3 player will not work when plugged into the front ports. My USB flash key also will not work from either of my front ports. However, both devices work perfectly fine if I pull the computer out of my desk and plug either device into the rear ports.

I know the front ports work because I do not have any trouble with them under Windows XP. Further, my digital camera works perfectly fine on the front ports.

The connection light on each device doesn't even come on to show that it is receiveing power from the USB port, but the hard drive starts accessing files (presumably to try to get the devices to work) as soon as any device is plugged in.

Am I missing something? Does Linux (or Fedora) not support more than two active ports at a time? Did Microsoft hijack my computer to only allow those ports to work right under Windows?

If it helps, I am not a complete idiot. I am very experienced in computer hardware and software and hold several Microsoft network certifications. However, I am a "noob" when it comes to Linux...but that is why I am here...to learn more and become as proficient in Linux as I am in Windows.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks,

Jeff
