  Multimedia for Debain Howto

Debian supports more hardware out-of-the-box than M$.

You have to install a few packages (easy), run a command or 2 and you're in business

You already have a movie/music player installed called Totem (Movie Player) lot

did you notice linux-noob.com has upgraded to FCR4
Posted by: anyweb - 2005-09-10, 10:21 PM - Forum: Polls - Replies (3)

hi @ all,

did you notice any change recently here on the forums ?

one person did (znx) and he noticed that the forums now support a favicon.ico in the url.

well, that is, i was tired of reading the error_logs complaining about not finding same, so i put one in.

anyway, the site is now running twice on two different ips, one is running fcr1 (the laptop) and the other is running fcr4 (desktop).

have you notice any changes ? any difference in speed ?

vote above

cheers

  Mounting Samba Share
Posted by: kingttx - 2005-09-10, 10:08 PM - Forum: Mandriva - Replies (2)

Have you wanted to easily mount a Samba share without using the command line? Sacrilege, I know, but the following how-to might be helpful. It does make assumptions that you have a working Samba or Windows server on your local network and that you have a valid username and password for that share. Also, be sure you have administrative rights on your local computer.

Enjoy!

problems with two identical hdd's in fcr4
Posted by: anyweb - 2005-09-08, 08:25 PM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 4 - Replies (12)

hi guys

i installed fedora core release 4 on this box (the one that is currently running linux-noob.com) and during the installation i disabled the 2nd hard disc in the bios as the first time round anaconda crapped out when i had both /dev/hda and /dev/hdb selected....

anyway, the installation is done and seems to be working nicely (the websites running on it now !) but i'm still unsure about the 2nd hdd and my hard disc usage/space

basically there are two 40 gig hdd's, and i would expect df -h to report between 70 and 80 gb of storage... but not so. See below

Quote:[root@www ~]# df -hFilesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on

/dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00

                    36G  7.3G 27G  22% /

/dev/hda1              99M 14M 80M  15% /boot

/dev/shm              189M  0  189M 0% /dev/shm

next thing to check was fdisk -l

see below

Quote:[root@www ~]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hda: 40.0 GB, 40000000000 bytes

255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4863 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot      Start      End      Blocks Id  System

/dev/hda1 *        1          13      104391 83  Linux

/dev/hda2              14        4863    38957625 8e  Linux LVM

Disk /dev/hdb: 40.0 GB, 40020664320 bytes

255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4865 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot      Start      End      Blocks Id  System

/dev/hdb1 *        1        4865    39078081 8e  Linux LVM

looks like both hdd's are in use doesnt it ?

ok, how about what is mounted...

Quote:[root@www ~]# mount/dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00 on / type ext3 (rw)

/dev/proc on /proc type proc (rw)

/dev/sys on /sys type sysfs (rw)

/dev/devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)

/dev/hda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw)

/dev/shm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)

none on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw)

sunrpc on /var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs type rpc_pipefs (rw)

automount(pid1849) on /misc type autofs (rw,fd=4,pgrp=1849,minproto=2,maxproto=4)

automount(pid1899) on /net type autofs (rw,fd=4,pgrp=1899,minproto=2,maxproto=4)

so, my question is, is the second hdd being used at all, and if so where is the missing 40gb or so of hdd space ?

please advise !

cheers

  www.linux-noob.com upgraded to fcr4
Posted by: anyweb - 2005-09-08, 03:37 PM - Forum: Site News - Replies (3)

the entire site has been upgraded which involved a fresh install of fedora core release 4 on a different machine, an old P3 550mhz, 384mb ram, 2x40gig hd's

i then compiled mysql/apache and php and ported the site over via the latest backup file from yesterday.

all seems to be ok, if you notice anything unusual let me know

  Suse update issues
Posted by: dzimmerm - 2005-09-08, 12:50 PM - Forum: SUSE - Replies (2)

Hello,

anyweb asked that I post an email I sent to him earlier today. The email is shown below.

-------------------Begin paste of email

Dear anyweb,

I recently started playing with linux on an older Dell Laptop. It is a CPI

D266XT. That is an old Pentium II machine

with only 128 Meg of Ram and a 4.3 Gig hard drive.

I had been running W2k on it but I wanted to try linux.

My first attempt at linux was with Fedora Core 4. Fedora Core 4 worked after

quite a bit of tinkering to get the

US Robotics 802.11g wireless card working. I had to install ndiswrapper and

play with the settings a bit.

One thing that Fedora absolutely refused to configure was the Crystal sound

system. It is a CS4237B chip which

should be supported by CS4236. Unfortionately it looks like Kudzu has some

severe bugs when it comes to older

isa plug and play devices like this sound card.

Since I work with Novell servers on a daily basis I decided to try Novell's

Suse Linux and let Fedora "season" a

little.

Suse 9.3 appears to be a pretty good distro. It had support for the wireless

card with the exception that I had to

install the firmware binary file from US Robotics WXP driver download. Once

that was installed the card came

to life. The sound card ended up taking a little trial and error as I found

out there were several chipset files that

might work. I ended up with a slightly older file working better than the

default file.

Everything seemed to be really rosey until I fired up Yast and told it to

update my system. I used the default selections

of Yast in so far as the security updates and the recommended updates. I

watched as Yast downloaded and installed

the updates. After I rebooted my system, however, I found that I no longer

went automatically to the KDE

displaymanager. Instead I was thrown into a simpler and not very pretty

displaymanager. I searched quite a few

websites and forums and found out others had a simular problem after

updating their SUSE 9.3 with Yast.

Your website was the first one that pointed out the easy fix of editing the

/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager file. My file

was also set to xdm instead of kdm. Once I made that change the system

booted up and went directly to KDE

like it used to.

I can only guess the displaymanager file was updated and for some reason the

older default of xdm was used in the

updated file, probably by mistake.

Thanks again for posting your experience with SUSE 9.3 .

Sincerely,

dzimmerm
