  How do I install CMake
Posted by: Complitric - 2005-08-30, 01:43 AM - Forum: Compiling - Replies (4)

[/url][url=http://www.cmake.org/HTML/Install.html]http://www.cmake.org/HTML/Install.html

I have downloaded the program, and extracted both the initial file, and the included

tar. The tar extracted to /usr/local/

The instructions then tell me to do ./bootstrap? I typed that and there is no such

file. I did a updatedb, and a locate, but still I don't see it. I am confused, what do

I do now? (Fedora Core 4)

[R] PASV

[R] 227 Entering Passive Mode (**,***,*,**,**,***)

[L] 200 PORT command successful. Consider using PASV.

i dont know why it does this but if somone have any ideas please post them.

if sombody could show me the .conf file they are using it would be much appriciated so i can compare it to mine.

  Understanding Access Rights
Posted by: znx - 2005-08-28, 01:23 AM - Forum: Filesystem Management - Replies (8)

Understanding Access Permissions

Using file/directory permissions can be a little bit tricky when you come from the Microsoft world. At some points I will say "root" or more correctly UID 0, these things are the same.

Main Utilities:

chmod - Change access permissions of files

chown - Change file owner and group

And for more experienced users:

stat - Display file or filesystem status

The access rights determine if a process can access a file in a particular method. These rights specify read, write and execute and are further controlled by user, group and other.

Quick glance at how file permissions look:

Code:
znx@loud $ ls -l file
-rw-r-----  1 znx users 0 Aug 28 01:37 file

Taking each bit as it goes:

-

This represents the file type, file (-) and directory (d) are all you need right now,

there are more but it will just confuse matters.

rw-

The first three indicate the permissions for the file owner (znx), read

installing debian the easy way with net install
Posted by: jsn06 - 2005-08-26, 09:04 PM - Forum: Debian - Replies (3)

you need at least a high speed bandwith speed with minimum adsl 512kb

1.go get yourself a debian net install .iso image from [/url]http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ & burn it with you favourite burner.

2.i suggest a clean & full install without dual booting

3.change your bios settings if it hasn't been done yet, boot from you cdrom 1st boot or dvd-rom.

4.now you will get to see the debian logo & a line indicating to press F1 for help or Boot:

5: type linux26 just after Boot: or else if you hit enter you will boot with the 2.4 kernel & if you have a network connection with dhcp it will not be automatically detected,so be carefull & at the boot prompt type linux26.

6.now lets install debian.

7. follow these slides [url=http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slidesho...ase=395&slide=1]http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slidesho...ase=395&slide=1

8.when you arrive to Apt-configuration, choose ftp

9.configure xserver-xfree86,if you have an nvidia card scroll down & choose nv & the same you will still have to edit with vi /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 & modify certain settings, before doing that i suggest you cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to your /home like this if you mess up you can copy it back & once in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 Section "Module" & check if the option Load "glx" is there,if not add it,then disable with a #or even delete Load "dri" & Load "GLcore"

reboot & you should be done.

10.you should be done & have a full install of a Debian stable operating Os which is kickass. :):):):) johnny06

  Linux convert needing assistance
Posted by: Neofelis - 2005-08-24, 08:45 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (8)

I have made the decision to reformat my hard drive and either setup a dual boot system with WinXP and a Linux distro(Mandriva or Suse more then likely) or to just make it a Linux desktop. My questions are related to gaming. I play Everquest II and I am under the impression that I would need to run this program in WinXP. Btw, this is the only reason I still use WinXP! The game site indicates that EQII does not support Linux. Is there a WinXP emulator that I could run with Linux so that I could play the game? Would this result in too much of a hassle that I should just use a dual boot system?

If I did setup a dual boot system, would it be better to install WinXP and then Linux or vice versa? Is there a distro that will automatically setup your partitions based on the parameters I have given? Is there a better distro out there then the two I have mentioned for what I am looking to do with my system? Is there already a guide to answer the questions I have?

Sorry for all the questions in one post however I need all the help or advice I can get. Thanks.
