tutorials.linux-noob.com finished
Posted by: xDamox - 2005-08-24, 03:29 PM - Forum: Site News - Replies (1)

http://tutorials.linux-noob.com/ is finally finished :)

Tutorials.linux-noob.com will require you to have a valid username and password, which you can get of me or any other moderator. The reason for this is to

stop anyone posting junk/spam. Tutorials can be checked over by fellow members/moderators for spelling, grammar or punctuation.

To create a PDF formatted document you will need OpenOffice, which has a build in function for exporting your documents to PDF format :) (Note that OpenOffice does not provide protecting against people copying and pasting).

Open OpenOffice and create the document how you normally would. Once you have created your document and your happy with it click File then go down to Export as PDF. The PDF dialog will appear requesting a filename give your document a file name click save then you will get compression levels you can ignore then

and just click export and you will now have a PDF document :)

Note also to make the documents look good, and easy for users to read I would recommend using headings and sub headings. When you use the heading and sub headings you can use open office to easily generate a table of content for you, if you would like information on this just request it and Ill write how to do this with your documents.

any bugs/errors PM and let me know.

static inet address ? how do i?!
Posted by: tek-69 - 2005-08-24, 12:47 PM - Forum: Network Problems - Replies (3)

ok first the sob story:

Boo hooo! I live on the worst block in the U.S. ever. power is always goin out on me at least once a month, so much for taking the uptime crown....

ok now the issue:

Everytime the power goes out my box's inet addr changes, sometimes it's 192.168.1.101 sometimes it's 102 sometimes 103. usually 103. I have a linksys router that sits between 3 computers and the cable modem, and it forwards the nessesary ports for me, but when the inet addr changes i have to go in and change the addy for every port on the router. This is a pain in the neck. Is there any way i can have one inet address that never changes, and if so how do i do it? Is it a router thing or something i should set up on the box itself? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

  Trademark Fees.
Posted by: anyweb - 2005-08-23, 08:31 PM - Forum: Polls - Replies (5)

are Linux trademark fees as so wildly reported lately, good or bad for us ?

what do you think ? vote !

more info here http://www.linuxmark.org/fees.html

Quote:      Schedule A of the LMI Sublicense sets forth details of the sublicense fee.  What follows is a summary.

Sliding Scale.

An Annual Fee is applied to each sublicensed trademark.  The fee is set according to two factors: A) the for profit/non-profit status of your company or organization, and B) the aggregate gross revenue you expect to earn in the next fiscal year for goods/services associated with the mark in question.  Marks grouped in a brand are treated as a single mark.

Non-Profit Tier

Annual Fee = US$200

For Profit/Other Tier 1

[This is a "grandfather clause" for written sublicenses executed prior to August 1, 2004]Annual Fee = $0

For Profit/Other Tier 2

[Total projected annual gross revenue between zero and US $100,000]

Annual Fee = US $200

For Profit/Other Tier 3

[Total projected annual gross revenue between US $100,000 and US$200,000]

Annual Fee = US $500

For Profit/Other Tier 4

[Total projected annual gross revenue between US $200,000 and US $1 million]

Annual Fee = US $1000

For Profit/Other Tier 5

[Total projected annual gross revenue over US $1 million]

Annual Fee = US $5000

  FC4, Nvidia Geforce4 issues.. :(
Posted by: wootSRT - 2005-08-23, 05:56 PM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 4 - Replies (3)

Well, I've been playing with FC4 for the past 3-4 days now. I'm very new to linux and esp Fedora. Anyway, I have one of the horrable to configure Compaq Presario R3000 series laptops. It has a AMD 64 bit proc and a Nvidia Geforce 4 Go video card.

I assume that I have installed the 64bit version of FC4, however when I downloaded and attempted to install the AMDx_64 drivers, it says I do not have a 64bit version of Fedora installed and ends. I'm able to install the 32bit drivers, but can't seem to use them. I mod the config file in /etc/x11/xorg.conf and comment out the Load 'dri' like this:

Section "Module"

Load "dbe"

Load "extmod"

Load "fbdevhw"

Load "glx"

Load "record"

Load "freetype"

Load "type1"

# Load "dri"

Then change the 'nv' to 'nvidia' and reboot.

The X server will not start, but I can see the little Nvidia logo flash. I have to re-config the x server to be able to restart a x session.

So, my question is. What can I do to check if I indeed have the 64bit Fedora Core 4 version installed? Next, why can't I use the 64bit drivers if it is the 64bit disrto?

  PCI Network Card recommendation
Posted by: ShawnSmiley - 2005-08-23, 11:11 AM - Forum: Network Problems - Replies (2)

I'm in the process of assembling some spare parts into another computer that will run either Fedora 4 or Suse 9.3 (haven't quite decided which yet). The only piece I'm missing is a network card.

I'm hoping to run down to BestBuy tonight after work to pick up a card, are there any recommendations or warnings on cards to get (or not to get)? I'm looking for a card that I can put in the computer and have the Linux installer detect and install working drivers automatically (i.e. no manually compiling and installing drivers).

There are four cards listed on the BestBuy website that I'm considering (mostly because they are listed as probably being available at my local store):

D-Link - Desktop 10/100 PCI Network Card (DFE-530TX+)

Dynex - Desktop 10/100 PCI Network Card (DX-E101)

Linksys - EtherFast Desktop 10/100 PCI Card (LNE100TX)

Netgear - Gigabit PCI Desktop Adapter (GA311)

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Getting a USB Joystick to work in snes9x express
Posted by: Samhain - 2005-08-22, 06:10 PM - Forum: Fedora - Replies (2)

I just recently got my FC4 install purring like a dream, but am having issues getting snes9x express (Frontend) to recognize my joystick. The Joystick in question is a Gravis Eliminator Gamepad Pro. snes9x express wants it to be in a directoy, and called js0 or something like that. If I just plug it in it works perfect in ppracer.

So what should I do? I'm assuming that it wants a file for the gamepad, or what?

Thanks! :)

  Linux is slow
Posted by: Zane - 2005-08-22, 04:55 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (26)

Here's the thing...

My wife has been using a 200mhz computer running Windows 95 for some time. Last week it died on her.

Someone had given me a 500mhz system 128 meg of RAM so I figured to upgrade her. (Yeah not much of an upgrade but free and I'm poor).

It already had Windows 2000 on it and I installed Firefox and OOo and it worked fine except when I tried to use MicroSoft update I got told that I couldn't. Now I know there's a workaround for this, but I don't want to be a pirate so I format and do a Fedora Core 4 desktop install. Get everything working and everyone is happy right...

Not quite.

Everything works but everything takes FOREVER to open. 2 munutes or more for Firefox. Over 3 minutes for OOo. Evolution anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes. Even small games like freecell take over a minute to open. Heck, a terminal windows takes over a minute to open. Additionally switching between aps takes forever as well. I can't think of why this should be.

Ok so here's the questions...

1. Is there a way I can speed up Core 4 to work for her?

if not ...

2. What distro would someone suggest keeping in mind she needs the following apps.

a)OpenOffice.org

b)Email client (Preferly Evolution)

c)Firefox

d)gnuCash

Other things may be needed as well but I haven't identified them yet. Those are the biggies though. Samba is needed to the extent that she needs to attatch to other computers on the network for printing and shared files, though as I move more of my computers (All free and between 200 and 800 mhz) to linux it won't be as important.

Also, she uses a wireless Xterasys PCI network card that I may or may not be able to make work with the 2.4 kernel.

Ok so any Ideas would be appreciated on making this system usable.

Hello all,

I'm Samhain, and I'm a Linux Noob. I've got Fedora Core 4 installed, and online, got Samba doing it's thing back to my windows boxes, and just now got winamp on the Liniux box and am jamming out even as I type.

I'm new as heck to Linux, but an old pro at effin Dos and Windows, so hello everyone! I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions to ask as I start this endeavor to move away from windows, so please bear with me. :)
