So I'm not sure if this is the right board to be posting to but I'll have a go at it here first. I've just recently installed FC4 and things seem to be working well enough for me. I'm running into problems finding updated packages for this Fedora release for programs that have been suggested to me in #linux-noob. Specifically, I'd like to install eterm for my shell usage, and there aren't any packages floating around (at least that I can find) for FC4 yet. So, this is more of a general question, though eterm is a specific example, I'd like to know how I should go about creating my own packages for FC4 and resolving necessary dependencies and such. How should I approach compiling binaries, finding the right binaries to compile and configuring them correctly? Any suggestions and tips are welcome.

HI, somebody help me. This is my problem:
I've just installed Mandrake 10.2 (Mandriva LE2005), during the installation t recognize my modem (Intel Corp. |82801DB/DBL/DBM(ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC '97) but when I try to connect I can't, It seems that Mandriva doesn't recognize my modem controller... what can I do?

i cannot find support for the sound blaster 128 pci card with ensoniq 5880 chipset.
lspci:
Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI (rev 02)
i've read that es1371 supports it, however, although it seems to initialize, alsa errors out with it. it's my presumption that this is not the right module.
anyone have this chipset working in linux?

I know slackware doesn't default to any alsa rc file. Its possible to use the PCM layer of alsa to have more then 1 sound stream doing at the same time. By default all alsa enabled alsa apps look for a file in your home dir called .asoundrc
So just use my contents .. results may vary
