  Buddy Icon in Gaim
Posted by: InaVirtualGhetto - 2004-09-24, 04:21 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (2)

Is there any way for someone to change their buddy icon with Gaim? I can't seem to find a way, am I overlooking something? my Gaim version is 0.79 ... If I can't change it with Gaim, is there a way to do it without going onto a windows box? I'd hate to have to do that...

  Linux on laptops
Posted by: InaVirtualGhetto - 2004-09-23, 02:57 AM - Forum: General Chat - Replies (6)

Well First off, I just wanna say, I finally got a job! Im set to begin working at a new Staples opening up near my home next month. Now, I got this job mainly because I want to buy a laptop. I am split between buying an ibook/powerbook or an ibm-compatible laptop. Now, my question is, what brand/model/etc laptop is the best choice for putting linux onto? OF course, if i buy a Mac, i am not going to put linux onto it, so my question really pertains more towards IBM-compatible laptops. Also, are there any brands/models/etc in particular to stay away from? Any suggestiosn? ty in advance...

I saw on screenshots that you can do transparency on programs like KIT or Gaim or XChat was wondering how you would do that?

Is an update really an update?
Posted by: kikaida - 2004-09-20, 10:21 PM - Forum: Updating Linux - Replies (2)

So, dinking around with my system last night I go through the motions of trying to update things and it appears as if I'm good to go. Am I correct in assuming that there are various ways of going about the same things as far as updates are concerned or am I missing something here.

I went through the process of apt-get update, and let that do it's thing.

I also installed Synaptic and ran through its processes and grabbed a whole bunch more updates.

Now I'm reading up on YUM.....Am I chasing my tail here or is this yet another updater that needs to be ran?

  Whats up with eth0?
Posted by: kikaida - 2004-09-17, 04:35 PM - Forum: Network Problems - Replies (8)

Hello all,

Well, I am fumbling through my new Fedora c2 setup (first time on Linux) and last night I managed to get on line with my DSL. I set up a new DSL connection, activated it and was good to go. Now this "new" connection appears under my eth0 object so logic dictates that I should have activated my eth0 to get on line but it wont activate. I launched a browser to try to generate an error to work up from by VIOLA! I was on line. But that still doesn't answer the question as to why eth0 wont activate. Am I interpreting "activation" out of context? I am likening it to having a NIC card on my 2K system defined as "disabled" which if that was the case I would not be able to use it to connect to a network/internet.

After being an Admin for Windows networks for years, this Linux stuff is REALLY refreshing.

If you could recommend one book on learning Linux/Fedora, which would you recommend?
