so here's the deal.
I have one old 486 computer, one AMD 500mhz, and one intel 800mhz.
they are all ethernet enabled.
i have been told that an old 486 with a linux distribution and some tweaking will make a great networking server, but the problem is, i dont know what distribution to use, or how to set the distribution up for networking with the other computers.
basically, i would like to set up the 486 as a server behind my cable modem for the other two computers. i would also like to be able to store and retrieve data on the hard drive of the 486 from the other two computers.
anyone have any clues?
any ideas appreciated.

sorry, but if any of you noticed, linux-noob.com was unavailable for between 1 and 7 hours or so last night,
originally it was connected to a dlink di-701 hardware firewall (worked fine for a few years) but last nite i attempted to change a port setting on the firewall and my worst nightmare came true, the little firewall decided enough was enough and promptly had a hardware error.
No amount of power reboots could get rid of the RED led error light on the firewall, so in panic i quickly found an old computer, shoved a second network card in it and installed smoothwall express 2.0 final.
i configured it and finished the config this morning (i had to sleep...)
all appears to be more or less fine now, apologies for any downtime that you may have encountered, and lets hope that all is going to be smooth (pun intended) from now on.
cheers

My Dell 1.8ghz / 256mb ram is getting a bit slow with XP and I'm thinking of trying out Linux. I'm at a loss as to which version to get. My main requirement is speed, but looks / ease-of-use are also important. I'd like a free version, and I'm currently eye-ing up Fedora, which you seem to like. Any comments on whether this is a good / bad decision?
I really suit your new domain linux-noob. I've heard a wide range of stuff about compatability, and I don't know what to believe. My main concerns are these:
- Photoshop / Dreamweaver / Fireworks - Are there any issues you know of?
- Web serving - Just need a testing server, nothing serious. I'm sure there's an appropriate app.
- Domain connecting - My school disallows anything other than Windows because they're afraid on it, but MacOS works so I suspect Linux might. Its a regular Windows Server 2003 domain.
- Multiple monitors - Got another monitor on my laptop now with XP, works a dream. How are linux on this?
Anything else you think I might need to know? I appreciate this is a lot to ask from someone I don't even know, just your site seems the most informed Linux resource. Any answers, however brief, would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Michael Dent
