Hi alll,
this is the second version of linux I have installed (previously mandrake, this time Red Hat 9). The reason I did away with my last install was because I could not get my Winmodem working. Now I have the (dreaded) BT Voyager ADSL USB modem and things don't seem to have changed. (oh by the way I'm doing all of this in windows XP).....
I have the relevant details of how to get the said modem working in Linux however do not have the knowledge to put all the details together. I hope this forum can enlighten a novice and at the moment unimpressed user.
I will not let this beat me though so all your help will not go unappreciated.
Thanks to you all in advance.

I just downloaded Redhat 9 the other day, so I'm new to this. When I log into Redhat, It gives me an error that says GNOME won't load properly. Does anyone know how to fix it?

Ive got the contents unzipped to a folder, and I am staring at them wondering why the divx people couldnt be nice and make a rpm out of them. How do you install things manually, anyway?

My cookies don't seem to be working for this site. The auto-form-complete remembers my username and pass, but login isn't stored after browser close, and there is some trouble with definitions of posts as "new". Help, anyone?

Hello, I hope someone may beable to help me.
I have two computers with drives I need access to, what I do right now is this:
from a terminal I su - so I am on as root then type in:
Mount -t smb //xbox/f /mnt/xbox
once I hit enter it asks for a password I type it in and viola that drive is now mounted.
the other one is:
Mount -t smb //192.168.0.100/storage /mnt/pc2
once I hit enter it asks for a password I type it in and viola that drive is now mounted.
I can also type it in this way:
Mount -a //xbox/f /mnt/xbox and it works fine after I enter my password.
What I would really like to know is how do I enter this into FSTAB so this is all done automatic at boot?
I would sure love a small guide from someone on how to enter this properly :)
Thank you for any help

error when using wine |

Installation successful, but whenever I go to run the exe installer files I have, I get
"This program requires Windows version 4.0.1212 or later."
I remember hearing somewhere about how wine creates a folder system that makes fiels think they're in Windows. Could it be that i have to put the exe files in there before running them?
EDIT: That was trying to install Kazaa Lite. A few other things have worked without any major snags. I've gotten used to irc, and Im thinking I'll switch to it, so this query loses importance.

:) Hi friend,
I have installed recently released Wine Package from wine-20040121.tar.gz in my operating system Redhat Linux 2.4.20-8 .i686 with Option of NO Window Install(i.e; fake window) in my user directory. It installed correctly and percetage correctness when checked with command ./tools/winecheck is 95%.
With this i am not able to run various dos programme like adobe page maker 5.5,
Winzip 8.1,WinRaR3.2,Notepad,etc.
Now i installed Winamp 2.75 it went all right while installing without any error. It is also opening with its default skin without any problem. But when i open a .mp3 file and click open it does not play and gives 'Nullsoft output error 2.3'.I am unable to unerstand this error.
I also tried to intall Winow Media Player 7.1 but it is not getting installed. All the time it tells that unable to load uninstaller and reboot system.Doing so also does not prooved to be helpful.Next time also the error is same.
Kindly help me also so that i may play mp3 file and .dat file in linux through Wine.
:(

Greetings, everyone.
Real name: Steve.
I installed Redhat 9.0 on a new hard drive because I needed more space, and immediately after that, my old xp hard drive caught a virus. I've been working out of a help book, but it cant explain things like how to play mpegs and why my cd drives give a busy signal and wont eject. A quick glance over this forum, and it seems like I've hit my mark. I'm looking forward to learning through the community and in time giving back in advice to others.

Linux distro selection... |

Hi ya'll... first and foremost I really enjoy this site. Most of the members here are very helpful and "kind". I want to give a shout to AnyWeb for providing this for the masses. With the ass kissing aside, I would like to ask you guys this:
I have a small home network with a win98(laser printer), XP(workstation), MacOS X(workstation), and ClarkConnect Linux server(apache, ftp, mysql, etc). I am having issues with file sharing with my MacOS box and windows and I can't see my linux shares at all from X.
I would like to know if there is a better distro of linux I can use that can serve all of the machines on the network like a winadvserver running Active Directory. I want all of my computers to live in a happy file sharing environment without the usage of windows as the primary domain controller.
The budget is null and the machine I would like to install the Linux distro is a 400celeron, 256mb sdram, about 40gigs hdd. I would really like a Active Directory replacement for my network. Distro and package suggestions are very welcome.
Thanks
