I need to install "IEs4Linux" but it won't install? |

I've just begun to use Linux, and have chosen PCLinuxOS. I'm very happy so far, but still have some small kinks to deal with:
I need to install "IEs4Linux" but it won't install. Instead it gives me this message:
Quote:IEs4Linux 2 is developed to be used with recent Wine versions (0.9.x).It seems that you are using an old version. It's recommended that you
update your wine to the latest version (Go to: winehq.com).
However, I've checked in Synaptic that Wine is currently installed as version "1.1.33-1pclos2010" and that matches the most recent version over at WineHQ.
--> How can I get this to work?
Background:
I'm actually trying to get MS Money 2004 to run in Wine, which requires IEs4Linux installed. There's a good explanation at WineHQ that I used successfully on Ubuntu 9.04, but I get the above error on PCLinuxOS. Apparently IEs4Linux doesn't recognize that the proper Wine-version is installed, and that's all I need to fix.

From googles blog >
Quote:In July we announced that we were working on Google Chrome OS, an open source operating system for people who spend most of their time on the web.
Today we are open-sourcing the project as Chromium OS. We are doing this early, a year before Google Chrome OS will be ready for users, because we are eager to engage with partners, the open source community and developers. As with the Google Chrome browser, development will be done in the open from this point on. This means the code is free, accessible to anyone and open for contributions. The Chromium OS project includes our current code base, user interface experiments and some initial designs for ongoing development. This is the initial sketch and we will color it in over the course of the next year.
We want to take this opportunity to explain why we're excited about the project and how it is a fundamentally different model of computing.
First, it's all about the web. All apps are web apps. The entire experience takes place within the browser and there are no conventional desktop applications. This means users do not have to deal with installing, managing and updating programs.
Second, because all apps live within the browser, there are significant benefits to security. Unlike traditional operating systems, Chrome OS doesn't trust the applications you run. Each app is contained within a security sandbox making it harder for malware and viruses to infect your computer. Furthermore, Chrome OS barely trusts itself. Every time you restart your computer the operating system verifies the integrity of its code. If your system has been compromised, it is designed to fix itself with a reboot. While no computer can be made completely secure, we're going to make life much harder (and less profitable) for the bad guys. If you dig security, read the Chrome OS Security Overview or watch the video.
Most of all, we are obsessed with speed. We are taking out every unnecessary process, optimizing many operations and running everything possible in parallel. This means you can go from turning on the computer to surfing the web in a few seconds. Our obsession with speed goes all the way down to the metal. We are specifying reference hardware components to create the fastest experience for Google Chrome OS.
There is still a lot of work to do, and we're excited to work with the open source community. We have benefited hugely from projects like GNU, the Linux Kernel, Moblin, Ubuntu, WebKit and many more. We will be contributing our code upstream and engaging closely with these and other open source efforts.
Google Chrome OS will be ready for consumers this time next year. Sign up here for updates or if you like building your operating system from source, get involved at chromium.org.
Lastly, here is a short video that explains why we're so excited about Google Chrome OS.

My favorite distro, has released their latest version today, Fedora 12 has been released. "I'm proud to announce the release of Fedora 12, the latest innovative Linux distribution from the Fedora Project, a global, collaborative partnership of free software community members sponsored by Red Hat."
The new features include the Linux Kernel version 2.6.31, GNOME 2.28, KDE 4.3, an improved KVM virtualization stack with memory deduplication and libguestfs, and smaller and faster updates thanks to delta updates enabled by default and XZ compression
It also comes with better webcam support, improved mobile broadband support, support for BlueTooth audio devices, uPnP audio MediaServer and surround sound in sound events in Pulseaudio, KMS enabled by default in the Nouveau driver, a Moblin graphical interface for netbooks, an SELinux sandbox, and many other improvements.
Download it here. See a release notes here (a complete list is here). Known issues are documented on the common bugs page.

e-mail attachments are unable to send out large files such as mp3 music files which are several megabytes - does anybody know of any software for Fedora 10 which can send mp3 files over the internet to another computer user?

How to compile gcc without a compiler installed?!?! |

Hey all!
I'm pretty fresh with linux, especially when it comes to installing stuff without rpm or yum. So i have a AstLinux distro, which is very slimmed down, and does not come with a c complier installed. Sooo, I try to install gcc, and when running the ./configure script simply results in an error of no c compiler installed!
SO, I need some detailed help in how to get this thing installed.
This is my biggest downfall with being proficient with linux, I always seem to get stumped with installing the many pre-requisites for the one program i need. ANY help would be awesome!
Thanks,
Adam R.J.

GNOME 3.0 Pushed Back Six Months |

As most of you will know, the GNOME team is hard at work on GNOME 3.0, the first major overhaul of the platform since 2002. The release of GNOME 3.0 was originally planned for March 2010, but it has now been pushed back for six months to September 2010.
The reason is rather clear: the GNOME team wants to ensure the quality of the release is up to snuff. To make sure that it is, the release date for GNOME 3.0 has been pushed back until September 2010, while the March 2010 release will be GNOME 2.30 (in other words, 2.32 will be 3.0). The March 2010 date was clearly preliminary, so a delay is nothing surprising.

OpenSUSE 11.2 Released |

We're in the middle of the distribution release frenxy, or so it seems. After Ubuntu 9.10 and Mandriva Linux 2010.0, it's OpenSUSE time now: the team has pushed out OpenSUSE 11.2. A minor version number, but there's enough in there, still.
OpenSUSE 11.2 uses the 2.6.31 version of the Linux kernel, and also comes with a kernel specifically tweaked for desktop use. The new default file system is Ext4, but Ext3 is still supported if you're still wary of the new kid in town. For the adventurous, the YaST partitioner can work with Btrfs, too. Work has also gone into better supporting netbooks, hardware-wise.
Desktop-wise, it comes with the usual suspects: KDE 4.3 and GNOME 2.28. There's also the new KDE Firefox and OpenOffice.org integration, hopefully leading to a more consistent KDE desktop experience. As a sidenote: can anyone confirm if the KDE integration for these applications goes beyond a mere theme? As in, if I switch my theme in KDE, will OpenOffice.org and Firefox adapt? In the past, "integration" often meant nothing more than slapping a theme on these applications which did not change when you changed your KDE theme. GNOME has been given a new theme, called Sonar.

Shuttleworth stretches Ubuntu from netbooks to heavens |

Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and the marketing machine that is Microsoft are tough acts to follow. But Mark Shuttleworth, founder of the Ubuntu Linux project, is relieved that Windows 7 is out. Now, Ubuntu 9.10 - which is arguably the best desktop Linux released by the project and supported by Canonical, the commercial entity that provides tech support and other services for Ubuntu - can get on with showing how Ubuntu stacks up to Windows on both the desktop and on the server.
After all, trhe pressure is really on Microsoft to defend its desktops and servers and its relatively recent advances in netbooks. Microsoft is the public company with shareholders, while Canonical and the Ubuntu project is backed up Shuttleworth, who made his hundreds of millions of dollars in the dot-com boom and is more interested in building an open source platform than in generating profits for shareholders.

Dell refunds customer for rejecting Windows |

Many have seen windows pre-installed on consumer machines as being a "microsoft tax" since it's included in the price of the PC, whether or not it is used. There has already been controversy that some pre-installed ubuntu netbooks aren't any cheaper than XP-installed ones, and the image hasn't been optimised for netbook usage, tarnishing the widespread adoption of Linux on new machines.
However, it seems the rejection of pre-installed windows - and associated refunds - is a reality. As the BBC reported, Dave Mitchell successfully obtained a refund with very little trouble, and more recently The Register reports of Graeme Cobbett achieving the same.
Read more on Graeme's blog
Note: do NOT perceive this as an anti-windows backlash, more an observation that some people CAN buy a computer without an OS (or at least get refunded for one) so that they can install the OS of their choice. It is also interesting how Dell's customer support processes the refund.

thoughts for improving the site.. |

hi guys,
as most of you know I started this site some years ago to help others learn about linux, it has grown but very slowly,
i think it needs some changes to generate new interest,
I've asked people to write reviews but that was a non-starter, I ended up writing many reviews over the years, but really it needs someone elses opinion and not just mine, I've asked people to post news, but that doesn't seem to happen on a regular basis
I added a blog, no one cared, i updated the site to make it cool, no one cared.. I'm trying but maybe i'm trying the wrong way, so I need your help to guide me to the right way.
so, what can we do to improve things ? tell ME what to do to make this place better, or shall we just be content with 3 or so posts a week...
I would appreciate your thoughts
cheers
niall
