  Annoying 403 Error
Posted by: Gravedig2 - 2009-09-21, 10:13 PM - Forum: LAMP - Replies (1)

I have just moved from another LAMP server that wasn't running any Control Panel. I move my files there from a cPanel server without any problem. Now, I want to move them to another server that is closer to me. Upon trying to to move my files via a TAR archive, I am recieving a 403 error. I have tried every single possible combination for permissions both on the folder itself and the files within and I still recieve a 403. (I have tried the one at https://www.linux-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/1144-set-correct-permissions-on-your-apache-files/). Does anybody have any ideas? Thank you in advance!

  Input/Output erro
Posted by: Vik - 2009-09-14, 06:06 AM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (3)

Hello, linux-noob.com! I'm fairly new to Linux and I'm very excited to venture away from Microsoft. I've recently made a ISO of Fedora 11-live and I've installed it before but with a bad setup so I wiped my HDD clean, reinstalled windows vista as the primary OS, and went to reinstall Fedora 11 with the live CD but I got input/output errors for LVM, Fedora installer, and all other applications I tried. I looked up the problem with Google and it says I might have a failing hard drive. I don't think this is the case as I'm using the same hard drive for windows without a flaw. Its a 320 GB HDD that's split 1/2 and 1/2 for windows/Linux. I have the other half of the HDD as unallocated space.

Does anyone have any idea to whats going on? Many thanks ahead of time and I look forward to Linux and linux-noob.com. =]

  LFTP client issue
Posted by: Dungeon-Dave - 2009-09-11, 09:24 AM - Forum: FTP Server - No Replies

Been using lftp for a bit now, and like it as a client due to nice inbuilt features and shell-like behaviour.

However, with my recent server I've noticed some strange behaviour with this client, mainly with obtaining directory listings. I can ftp into another server and perform a "dir" or "ls", but when changing directory both commands still show the old listing. Peculiarly, I can use TAB to auto-complete in a "cd" command and it will see that a different directory exists, but then refuse to change to that directory since the name doesn't exist in the (old) dir listing.

I solved this once by turning off caching and flushing it to force a re-read of the directory, but once it had obtained a listing it then stubbornly refused to update remote server listings.

This happens on one box running F9 with lftp3.6.3 - two other boxes running F8+lftp3.5.14 and F4+lftp3.2.1 are fine.

Oddly it only seems to do it over ftp: and ftps: connection to remote servers - sftp: connections are fine, working as expected.

Any ideas?

It seems like more and more companies are passing out public betas. So it is no great surprise that Novell has release a beta of their Open Enterprise Server 2 (OES2 SP2)

  Kubuntu Gets Some Love
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-09-06, 11:00 AM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

It's no secret that when it comes to KDE-based distributions, Kubuntu isn't exactly the cream of the crop. With the release of Kubuntu Karmic Alpha 5, the KDE4 desktop delivered with Kubuntu received some much-needed love. Let's take a look at what the Kubuntu people are doing.

First and foremost, with the upcoming 9.10 "Karmic Koala" release of Kubuntu, the distribution upgrades KDE to KDE 4.3, and this alpha release already contains the recently released KDE 4.3.1 bugfix release. KDE 4.3 brings many needed improvements to the KDE4 desktop. This release also comes with Plasma's new netbook-oriented interface.

Finally, Kubuntu also takes the nessecary steps to make Gtk+/GNOME applications look nice and well-integrated in a Qt/KDE environment by shipping the QtCurve engine. The Gtk+ Appearance System Settings module also makes a comeback so you get fine-grained control over the Gtk+/GNOME applications running in KDE. About time, I'd say, other KDE distributions have had this for a while.

Installing 32bit Support Into 64bit Fedora
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-09-05, 07:59 PM - Forum: Fedora 12 - No Replies

"If you're running newer hardware, there are some definite advantages to installing a 64-bit operating system. But, if you still need to run any 32-bit applications, you'll need to have the 32-bit support libraries installed. Different Linux distros handle this in different ways. For 64-bit Ubuntu, finding the proper 32-bit support packages is a simple matter of opening up the Synaptic Package Manager, and searching for the string 'ia32'. With 64-bit openSuSE, 32-bit support is already built-in, so you don't have to do anything. With Fedora, though, it's a whole different story. Not only are the 32-bit packages not already installed, the Fedora folk don't provide any documentation on how to install them. The directions I found via Google were outdated, and wouldn't work. I finally resolved the problem by asking a Red Hat employee in my local Linux Users Group."
