ow to use a USB stick to install SLES 10 - "No catalog found..." |

I'm trying to install SLES 10 from a 4Gb USB Stick. I have followed the instructions from Novell to create the bootable USB. I also used information from an openSUSE forum post. Here is the procedure that I have followed to date, it's a hybrid of the above mentioned notes:
1. Mount the dvd iso image to drive I: using "Virtual CloneDrive"
2. Copy the entire ISO image I: to the USB stick J:
3. Move all files from J:/boot/i386/loader to J:/
4. Delete J:/isolinux.bin
5. Rename J:/isolinux.cfg to J:/syslinux.cfg
6. Run C:/syslinux/win32/syslinux -ma J:
7. From the J: root, I execute ls -A1 > directory.yast
I can now boot my server from this USB stick. When prompted for a boot option, I enter "linux" to start the install. When the install starts it asks "Make sure that CD number 1 is in your drive." I select "Back" and accept defaults until the source medium comes up. There I select "Hard Disk" and then choose "sdb1 : vfat", and leave the "source directory" blank. The installation then loads and runs just fine until I get to the Installation summary screen. Under the Software heading, YaST is reporting the following error:
No catalog found at 'hd:///?device=/dev/sdb1&filesystem=auto'.
As always, the geek gods will reign favor upon all who answer!
Thanks
Mike

hey guys i recently got a free computer its a p4 1.6ghz with 256mb ram. the model is powerspec 8280. i formatted the drive and put a old geforce 3 ti200 and a turtle beach santa cruz soundcard in that i had laying around. i have been interested in learning linux and was wondering if this machine would be worth or able to handle linux. im 23 years old now and i played around a little with mandrake awhile back when i was in 10th grade but havent used it since. i havent seen or heard anything about mandrake lately so i was thinking about ubuntu. how does this sound to u guys?
edit: also i dont have any of the driver discs that originally came with the pc so i dont know if that will be a problem. im maining concerned about lack of ethernet card driver and able to get it running online.

OpenShot -- Video Editing Made Simple |

Quote:Desktop Linux isn't necessarily the first platform you'd think of going to for video editing. Despite that, there are several great projects that offer video editing functionality; things like PiTiVi, Cinelerra and Kino to name just a few.
Jonathan Thomas wasn't satisfied with the existing video editing solutions on Linux, however. They weren't easy enough to use, powerful or stable enough. Enter OpenShot, Jonathan's solution.

Close to a Third of Dell Netbooks Ship with Linux |

We already discussed David Finch, Dell's senior product marketing manager for Linux clients, last week. We missed, however, some more interesting statements by Finch; Dell is looking into the ARM-based netbook smartbook market, and close to a third of all of Dell's netbooks ship with Linux.
Even though Dell is only the fifth-largest manufacturer of netbooks in the world, it is widely praised by the Linux community as one of the few vendors who does this whole Linux OEM thing right: a well-supported, default Ubuntu installation, without toy user interfaces or software releases that are two years old. Finch told PCWorld that Dell is about to update their Linux offering to the latest version of Ubuntu somewhere in the coming weeks.

Open Source web/ajax console for Postfix ! |

Since 3 years i develop an Open Source end-user front-end for Postfix, Spamassassin and others filters in order to help newbies to fight spams and to manage correctly eMail server on Linux.
During this work,i had improve this product by manage mailboxes, file server, OpenVPN,SQUID and others.
Anyway, my subject is SPAM today...
In several cases, Linux products are :stable, powerfull, have better performances, free of charge... more and more...
But installing, managing and maintaining these products require some linux knowledge...
People who start Linux do not have necessarily time and knowledge to quickly provide a complete security mail server for their company.
Artica For Postfix is an Open Source product designed to reduce the cost in order to create and manage a full linux server.
Especially the free existing Web consoles for postfix did not provide all the available features in a "sexy way".
It is designed to administrate trough a web console all security plugins available and tested in large environments.
You will find :
milter-greylist
amavis + spamassassin and Clamav + dspam
All products features are switched to interface.
The interface is coded in PHP+AJAX and is designed for multi-administrators and multi-domains.
![[Image: managing-potfix.jpg]](http://www.artica.fr/images/stories/gallery/screenshots/messaging/managing-potfix.jpg)
There are many statistics, graphs and charts helping tuning the mail process.
A quarantine management is designed in order to help administrators and end-users to retrieve their quarantined mails.
Without any others words, i invite you to see screenshots ( http://www.artica.fr/index.php/messaging) and visit the project website :

You can download it trough sourceforge too...
Any comments are welcome here...

Edit dual boot menu |

How do I edit the dual boot menu?
After, almost each, security update a new Linux option gets added. How do I erase the old ones? I looked under usr/bin for boot, menu, and screen. I could not find any of those directory names.
I also tried going to /boot/grub and found menu. It has a text document icon with an X on it and, to the right, says, "Link to unknown." After double-clicking on it I got:
Could not open the file /boot/grub/menu.lst.
You do not have the permissions necessary to open the file.
Following is the stuff under /boot
/boot/efi
/boot/grub
/boot/lost+found
/boot/config-2.6.29.5-191.fc11.x86_64

Eight Years of Linux Kernel Vulnerable |
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-08-14, 06:44 AM - Forum: Linux News

It's the end of the world. Again. According to some Linux developers and security researchers, a bug in the Linux kernel has just been uncovered that makes just about every distribution utilizing kernel 2.4 and 2.6 on just about all architectures since May of 2001 vulnerable to a certain kind of attack.
I'm not any sort of developer, so basically all of this makes no sense to me except that whatever comprises the aforementioned bug allows an attacker to escalate local privileges and completely compromise the entire system. Julien Tinnes, a security researcher who does know his way around kernel code, wrote the following details about the bug.
Quote:At first sight, the code in af_ipx.c looks correct and seems to initialize .sendpage properly. However, due to a bug in the SOCKOPS_WRAP macro, sock_sendpage will not be initialized. This code is very fragile and there are many other protocols where proto_ops are not correctly initialized at all (vulnerable even without the bug in SOCKOPS_WRAP)... Since it leads to the kernel executing code at NULL, the vulnerability is as trivial as it can get to exploit: an attacker can just put code in the first page that will get executed with kernel privileges.

Hi,
I'm very new to the linux world, just bought a used xps that has F9 loaded currently. I'm just browsing trying to pick up tips and tricks. Should I upgrade to F11? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
