set up other users (including root)
Posted by: BigJohnAggie - 2008-08-11, 02:00 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (1)

I need to set up other users, including root. I've used root on a previous install of open SuSe 11, but if I ever knew how, I've forgotten.

check available version of package for upgrade
Posted by: kirbychip - 2008-08-11, 06:59 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (2)

Hi,

When doing an upgrade from yum, i just key-in "yum upgrade packagename". But what was installed is a different version, which I assume is the latest available for that package. Is there a way I can search or see what are the available versions of a certain package? just in case I want an upgrade to certain version, but not to the lastest one.

Thanks.

  Fedora freezing on me.
Posted by: Flipstik - 2008-08-07, 02:19 AM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (4)

Ok, so i just installed Fedora core 9 on my computer today, and everything seemed to be working fine for a while, but all of a sudden my screen turned white and i had to restart the computer. This happened two other times now and i don't know why it is happening or what to do. I have a KDE desktop on it and i haven't installed any extra programs or anything on it yet.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you! :)

IBM, Linux and the Microsoft-Free PC
Posted by: anyweb - 2008-08-06, 08:19 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

After 10 years of supporting Linux, IBM continues to challenge Microsoft on multiple fronts and aims to push Linux even further into the enterprise. While IBM has competed and partnered with Microsoft over the last two decades, the Microsoft-free PC effort is perhaps its most direct assault yet. "The idea of Microsoft-free personal computing has been in the air for a while," Inna Kuznetsova, director of Linux at IBM, told InternetNews.com. "We're just partnering with Linux distribution vendors and hardware vendors to make it happen."

  Fedora on a stick
Posted by: anyweb - 2008-08-06, 08:17 PM - Forum: Fedora 9 - Replies (3)

Quote:Fedora 9 now lets you create a bootable Linux distribution on a flash drive with persistence. In other words, you can not only boot any PC that will accept USB drive booting into Linux, you can even boot into your own personal desktop. Now, that can be useful.

Perhaps the easiest way to set up your own Fedora desktop on a stick is to use, believe it or not, liveusb-creator on Windows. This program gives you a straightforward GUI for creating Fedora desktop sticks. There is also a version of the program for Linux, but it's still in beta.

Of course, you can also install the Fedora stick desktop with command-line instructions. I tried both ways, and while the Windows application is mindlessly simple, using the manual way on Linux isn't going to task anyone with any Linux experience.

  Sharing drives on virtual machine
Posted by: casaba - 2008-08-06, 08:16 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (1)

I am having trouble finding information on the (seemingly) very basics.

I have a machine running XP and VMware with a Fedora 7 virtual machine. I have 4 partitions (e.g. photos, website...) and I was hoping to have shared access to these partitions.

After a lot of fiddling (sorry, didn't note what I did but I found that setting the drives as 'shared' in Windows did most of the trick) I now in Fedora I have a 'windows network' desktop icon in Fedora, with the name of my Windows machine. It takes a while to first open, and it lists not only the drives I added (e.g. "Websites (W)") but also all the Windows drives listed as "C$", "P$", "W$"... These latter drives with the $'s are inaccessible without authentication, which I don't really need as the drives I added (again, listed as "Pictures (P)" or "Websites (W)") are viewable and editable.

Now the questions:

1. Is there a more direct way to set up shared access?

2. Can, or should, I unmap the "C$..." drives? If so, how? (I'm thinking of how long it takes to simply open the Windows Network window.)

3. What address do I use in a config file to refer to these shared drives?

(My goal is to keep the local copy of my website where it is, editable with the Windows machine, and to use the Linux machine as a test web server. It is the Apache config file that I am trying to edit, changing the default "/var/www/html" to something like "smb://WinMachName/Websites%20(W)/www". I've tried several variations of this latter address with no luck; Apache won't start up. Any suggestions on a better way of setting up a test web server would be much appreciated. I have used WAMP in the past but thought that the VMware option would give me a taste of how web servers work, as well as finally get me working with Linux.)

Mandriva Spring 2008: the New 'Definitive' Linux?
Posted by: anyweb - 2008-08-05, 10:03 PM - Forum: Mandriva - No Replies

Jack Wallen of TechRepublic tried the Mandriva 2008 Spring and his verdict is "Mandriva Spring 2008 Live CD better than most other distributions fully installed." He claims that "This is, without a doubt, the finest release of any Linux distribution I have ever experienced in my 10+ years of using Linux."

quite a statement !

build your own fedora spin !
Posted by: anyweb - 2008-08-05, 10:02 PM - Forum: Fedora 9 - No Replies

Do we need even more Linux distros? That's a contentious topic, but if you'd like to make your own flavour of Fedora, see this guide to using Revisor, Fedora's re-build application. With some intermediate Linux knowledge (and a spare few hours), you can customise Fedora DVDs with your own software selection and updates.

Fedora Makes PS3 More Than a Toy
Posted by: anyweb - 2008-08-05, 10:01 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Early on, it was a bit of a challenge to get Linux natively installed on the PS3. Time has passed, and a great deal has changed. Fedora 7 installs on the PS3 out of the box, with the most challenging installation steps eliminated. This article introduces the basic configuration knobs and widgets specific to the PS3 running Linux, shows you how to use them effectively, and suggests the kind of trickery that gets improved performance.
