Hi, I"m youknowwhat4q, but you can call me Chris if you'd like. I"m a huge hardware nerd, constantly upgrading anything and everything I can, except on laptops, because I hate them.

I registered origonally just to ask one question but after looking around for a bit I decided that I like it and will be sticking around.

cant access shared files on centos 5.2
Posted by: zeus-dice - 2008-08-18, 10:56 AM - Forum: CentOS - Replies (2)

Good Day All

Can any one please help me.

I have installed centos 5. to my workgrouop. I then sreate users in centos and made the usename and passwords same as the windows machines. I then added the users to samba.

Now the tricky part comes in. I create to shared folders 1. backup and 2. test. In the sambe configuration i selected each directory to share and selected every one. (nb:because i can see see the users to select access to it seems that there is a bug in samba) .

On my windows machines i can see the centos machine. When i click on it it asks for a user name and password which i enter. I then can see the two files shared and a printer file. When ever i select on tho shared files i get a error

"windows cannot access \\gonowsa\backup check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network, To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose" The only file that i can access is the printer one. I have tried every thing and just can come right

This is my smb.conf file

# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the

# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed

# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too

# many!) most of which are not shown in this example

#

# For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,

# read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:

#

# Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the

# Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:

#

# Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)

# is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #

# for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you

# may wish to enable

#

# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"

# to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

#

#---------------

# SELINUX NOTES:

#

# If you want to use the useradd/groupadd family of binaries please run:

# setsebool -P samba_domain_controller on

#

# If you want to share home directories via samba please run:

# setsebool -P samba_enable_home_dirs on

#

# If you create a new directory you want to share you should mark it as

# "samba-share_t" so that selinux will let you write into it.

# Make sure not to do that on system directories as they may already have

# been marked with othe SELinux labels.

#

# Use ls -ldZ /path to see which context a directory has

#

# Set labels only on directories you created!

# To set a label use the following: chcon -t samba_share_t /path

#

# If you need to share a system created directory you can use one of the

# following (read-only/read-write):

# setsebool -P samba_export_all_ro on

# or

# setsebool -P samba_export_all_rw on

#

# If you want to run scripts (preexec/root prexec/print command/...) please

# put them into the /var/lib/samba/scripts directory so that smbd will be

# allowed to run them.

# Make sure you COPY them and not MOVE them so that the right SELinux context

# is applied, to check all is ok use restorecon -R -v /var/lib/samba/scripts

  deleting unnecessary files

hi,

i use linux ( generally fedora )in my institute where every student is given a fixed quota of files. My files are well within the size limit but are exceeding the number limit. While the files that I actually use are only a very small number, the files in the other folders, say .mozilla/cache, etc. are much more in number. Can someone please tell me which of these files can be safely deleed ( like disk-cleanup in windows? )

-thanks!

  Missing SATA Drives
Posted by: jscheponik - 2008-08-14, 08:17 PM - Forum: Fedora 8 - Replies (3)

I am on vacation and logged in remotely too check on my machine. To my surprise, 2 of my SATA drives that are part of my RAID 5 array seem to be missing. I am unable to get to this machine until Monday when I get home. Is there anything I can do to recover these drives? I have tried rebooting and they don't show up. Fdisk -l doesnt show them. Dmesg shows:

ata1: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300)

Not sure if that makes a difference or not. Could this be an issue with the cables? Is there any other commands I could use to try and figure out what happened to my drives? I am kinda newbish still to Fedora 8 and linux in general so any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if you need any other info, please let me know....

Hi everyone!

I have been using Linux for the past 2-3 weeks. I have been installing and reinstalling CenOS 5.2 and Fedora 8 on my 2 laptops just experimenting. I got tired of being a slave to my computer, I want to learn how operating systems work. Plus, I am tired of continually paying for upgrades and new applications to do my tasks. I hope I can find all the software I need here in linux. Although it has been a fun experience setting up linux on my machine, a lot of times it has been a hair-raising experience. But I am learning a lot even though there are moments that I have been on the verge of tears hehe. :)

The End of the Linspire Distribution
Posted by: anyweb - 2008-08-13, 08:54 AM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Xandros has announced the end of Linspire. The company says that it had too many for-pay distributions running around in the company portfolio, so one was bound to be cut. Linspire didn't make it. "Xandros purchased Linspire, the company, earlier this summer. This week, the company announced that it was going to revamp community distribution Freespire, basing its next version on Debian instead of Ubuntu, and using it as a precursor for Xandros Desktop Professional, in much the same way Red Hat uses Fedora and SUSE uses openSUSE. But the company didn't need multiple for-pay desktop distributions, so Linspire is getting the boot."

Please Help!

Installed Linux today on my VISTA PC. By using Microsofts virtual PC. At the end of the installation it could not recognize my graphics card on screen resolution. I tried to change it to my card since i saw it in the list. Now on launching I get a larger black screen with faint writing on it and flashing. I'm so new to Linux that I just don't know what to do. I need step by step instructions as this was suppose to be a learning experience for me for a school project....and it did not last long!

FEDORA 9 is what I have installed

Radeon x300 series is my Graphics card.
