Mandriva 2008 bcm4318 |

Hey, I'm a the definition of a linux noob. And I'm scared/frustrated. I've been attempting the switch from windows to linux for the past several weeks. First I tried Ubuntu 6.10 which didn't like my wireless adapter (BCM4318 [airforce one 54g]). After a week of failed attempts to get the wireless working (not having a clue what I was doing most of the time) I popped in a friends copy of backtrack2. The wireless worked automatically! But I couldn't install it to my hd because of the backtrack2 installer issues...bummer. Keep in mind I'm relying on peoples postings in forums to fix any problem that I run across, and also keep in mind that anything to do with the konsole I do not have a good grasp of. So most of the time I'm blindly punching in commands in the konsole getting errors and other disheartening messages along the way. After the backtrack letdown I tried Feisty Fawn...same outcome as 6.10. Messed around with it for a few days trying different "solutions" posted in forums, but nothing seemed to work. After Feisty Fawn I re-installed windows xp pro, but made sure to leave half my hard drive ready for linux. Today I installed Mandriva 2008 and was disappointed to find that the same problem still exists. As of today I understand that this is due to broadcoms lack of cooperation with linux and the reverse engineered drivers, but I still can't figure it out. I could just not be following any of the instructions correctly, but how am I to know? I tried my best now I'm running to you guys. If anyone could walk me through the process of getting my bcm4318 working in mandriva 2008 I'll be your best friend. Thanks
p.s. my laptop is an acer aspire 5003wlmi

PhpMyAdmin not working |

I have apache, mysql, and php working. Ive extracted the phpmyadmin directory from a tar file into the webservers document root directory. I can access test files within this directory with my browser so I know apache is setup fine. However when I point it to the phpmyadmin directory, nothing happens, the browser says done, and nothing is loaded. Also tried pointing it to the index.php, but again nothing.
had set user and pw in the config.inc.php, etc. I beleive the config.inc.php was setup fine, as i looked through several online installation tutorials and I did what they said. Since then I've tried all sorts of things and no longer have the config how I once had it.
Can anyone help? Why would the browser come up with NOTHING when pointed to the phpmyadmin directory? (It was makign it into the directory cuz i could open a test.txt within the directory)

I have tried several times installing fedora 7 and make it fully work in my computer. Even before i can install there's already a problem. The graphic install method wont work. If I click it there wont be any display that would come out. So i tried the text install method. it installed. Then I installed the latest Nvidia Drivers, downloading the RPM package from livna.org. But still, when i startx , the GUI won't come up. The display is the same when I try to install F7 thru graphical install method. Pls. help... My graphics card is an NVIDIA 6800 GS Sonic and my monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 591s. :( . thanx.
P.s. the CLI is working, just the GUI.

IPW3945 frustration |

Hey all. What's the general consensus here at Linux Noob regarding the IPW3945 wireless adapter? What's the correct way to enable this and have it working reliably? I've had this working since Fedora Core 6 but it's not very dependable. It seems that as Fedora matures wireless gets worse. It will work for a while and then disconnect. When that happens there's no way that it will re-connect. I run into an endless loop of entering passkey(s) and waiting for it to connect only to be asked for a passkey again. If I reboot it will connect. Who uses the IPW3945, how do you get it to work and how reliable is it for you? I'd like to be able to fix this headache once and for all. Here's some relevant system info:
Code: [glenn@localhost ~]$ /sbin/lspci | grep Wireless
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection (rev 02)
[glenn@localhost ~]$ /sbin/lsmod | grep iwl
iwl3945 159541 0
mac80211 112461 1 iwl3945
It's been mentioned over at the Fedora Forum that my problem this time around may be related to the fact that I'm using WPA2 encryption and that support for this is missing in Fedora 8. If this is true, do I need to go into my router and change to WEP?. That's like locking the door and leaving the key in the lock.
And what about this keyring thing? That's annoying too. Keeps coming up asking for passkeys. When will it be saisfied and stop bothering me? Can I disable it?
There are more questions I'm sure. Can't think too clearly right now so I'll end this here. Thanks for reading.

fc7 rpcbind/nfs problem? |

I compiled my client kernel to be vm-linuz-2.6.21-prepclient, where the client was configured to be NFS bootable.
I have two network cards on my client node, and both run on different networks.
If my node is numbered node 2, then eth0 has 192.168.1.2 and eth1 has 192.168.3.2 . Likewise, node 3 has eth0 configured 192.168.1.3 and eth1 is 192.168.3.3 and so on.
First, on power on, the client contacts the server using eth0 with a dhcp request, and gets the correct ip configured to it. Subsequently, diskless booting happens through this network. At the time when eth1 is configured, however, the network fails saying "some other host already uses the address 192.168.3.2.". No matter what address I use, it gives the same error.
Prior to activating the network service, I have netfs and rpcbind going up.
After the system is booted, I tried manually assigning the ip address, using
/sbin/ifconfig eth1 192.168.3.2 up
But this dosent help. The DHCP server seems to be running ok and the configuration file too looks ok to me.
Can anybody please help me with this problem?

"Werewolf" moves across the land
Router meltdowns close at hand
Sysadmins in search of blood
For those who caused this bandwidth flood
And whosoever took the risk
But failed to make an extra disc
Must face the Bastard Op from Hell
And lose his access to the shell
The best of Linux now is here
To kill the FUD and strike with fear
The hearts of those who steal your rights
And hide their code far from your sight
Closed source takes away what's yours
But you'll never shake the horror
Until you taste the freedom and
The power of FEDORA!

grub changing kernel |

I was reading this https://www.linux-noob.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2928 and have a unique situation.
I use MythDora 4 (Fedora Core 6 with MythTV distribution). Basically, in order to set the wake up time I set the clock, then I have to have system reboot into a kernel that halts the system so the clock in bios gets set properly. I had this working before in FC 5. But now it doesn't seem to like it anymore.
Code: echo "savedefault --default=1 --once quit" | grub
I get an error 15: file not found.
My grub.conf:
Code: default saved
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title MythDora (2.6.20-1.2944.fc6)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.20-1.2944.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.20-1.2944.fc6.img
savedefault
title Power Off
savedefault --default=0
halt
For laughs I added the below after halt. This stopped the error 15, but default was still 0 at top.
Code: kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.20-1.2944.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet
