Can't install Java or Flash plugin for Firefox Linux x86_64
Posted by: Bozo - 2007-07-20, 09:42 PM - Forum: Slackware - Replies (1)

I'm having trouble installing anything on my system. I am a complete n00b to Linux, I just switched from crappy Vista two days after I got a new desktop :P First I would like to get Java and Flash installed on Firefox but I keep getting a dependency error when trying to install. I'm running Bluewhite64 and really like it so far [img]<___base_url___>/uploads/emoticons/default_ph34r.png[/img]

This is what I get when I try to install Java, I have no idea why???

rpm -U --replacepkgs '///usr/java/jre-6u2-linux-amd64.rpm';echo RESULT=$?

  SSH Break
Posted by: znx - 2007-07-20, 02:46 PM - Forum: Tips and Tricks - Replies (1)

Being very used to killing telnet connections with Ctrl+] (or ^]) then quit, I wanted a simpler method with SSH.

Basically what this is for is, lets say your remote shell has hung up on you. Normally what I would do is open another shell and kill the process. This is obviously a pain to keep doing.

A quick bit of googling and I found this:

[/url][url=http://www.theclonchs.com/wiki/SSHBreak]http://www.theclonchs.com/wiki/SSHBreak

You can either edit the global ssh_config as the example in that URL says (/etc/ssh/ssh_config) or in the local user configuration (~/.ssh/config).

So to test that you have it working properly do:

Code:
mark@tone ~ % ssh localhost
Password: <password>
Last login: Fri Jul 20 15:45:45 2007 from localhost
mark@tone ~ %
mark@tone ~ % Connection to localhost closed.

So I typed Enter ~. and it quit. No more hung ssh connections! YAY

How do I Offsite LAN Netinst?
Posted by: Fujita - 2007-07-20, 07:59 AM - Forum: Debian - No Replies

Hi.

I want to install debian etch on my LAN using a minimal netinst CD or via PXE(I know how to set up this).

What I want to know is which files/directories I need to copy over from a mirror and put it on my local server.

I can then set up apache or NFS to serve these files. I just need to know how and which files/directories to copy over.

Thanks.

Turning on Wireless Card for an Evo N800w
Posted by: kmd - 2007-07-19, 05:51 PM - Forum: Wireless - Replies (14)

I am unable to turn on my wireless card (a Multiport W200 from Compaq) in Fedora 7. Normally, I would press Fn-F2, but this does not work while Linux is running. I have a Compaq Evo N800w. Would anyone be able to help me with this? Thank you.

  What's up
Posted by: Yaravi - 2007-07-18, 09:36 PM - Forum: Hello - Replies (4)

Hi everyone.

I work for a French / japanese company.

I am the infraestructure administrator for the northamerica division which means 3 production plants; 2 in the US and 1 in Mexico, and 1 research and development site.

I used to use linux back in the late 90s and early 2000. I started using RH and mandrake a long long time ago. I started setting up mail servers with sendmail and cache servers using squid.

Right now I started to use linux again (ubuntu) but it is a completely new world. Hope to understand well everything.

  MMC on Ubuntu 7.04
Posted by: Yaravi - 2007-07-18, 03:26 PM - Forum: Feisty Fawn (7.04) - No Replies

Hi all.

Is there any program/application that emulates or act like the MMC (microsoft management console) on ubuntu 7.04?

Right now I'm using ubuntu 7.04 and a windows XP on a vmware server because there are a few thing I just cant get rid off. Like Lotus notes 6.5.4 that I cant find the linux version anywhere, HYENA that allows me to connect to my servers running NT ( yes NT) using VNC (this is a nice application because I can connect to any computer on my network remotely because what it does is with your administrator rights it copys the VNC application and configure it), and the MMC to manage the active directory, DNS, DHCP, GPO's and that stuff.

Do you know of something like mmc for linux?

Thanks a lot.

  BASH Prompt
Posted by: znx - 2007-07-17, 10:33 PM - Forum: Tips and Tricks - Replies (1)

Lets be honest, everyone at some point has to dive into the shell under Linux. It could be a rather boring and annoying trip if your shell prompt is just:

Code:
znx $

Not only is that unhelpful its *YAWN* So how to spice it up .. well simple, take a look at moveax's quick introduction into how to do it.

Mine is rather simple looking at the moment:

mark@tone
~ %

The first bit is simply, my username at the hostname. Then the current working directory.

Hrrrm, time to spice it up again I think :)
