I tried to log on today and I was banned from EFNET... after not being on for a week... has anyone else had this problem?
I know this isn't linux related, but the chat for this site is on efnet.. so.. I assume talking about not being able to get to the server is ok.

No way in, no way out (Registry problems) |

Hey folks,
I'm having a weird error and I know what is it. Okay, here's the situation itself. I've used to use winxp and I was satisfied enough, until one day I played with registry and I bet you already imagine what has happened. As far as I remember, I've added a new .reg into a registry and nothing changed (seemed like nothing changed ;) ), so after shutdowning my pc I had to start it again (hey, everyone does that) and here comes the screen where I need to choose what should I load. Ubuntu or WinXp. As always I've chosen winXP and kaboom blue screen telling me 'BAD_POOL_CALLER' after googleing for some time, I've found out that it was supposed to be RAM problems. However, it wasn't, then after talking to few people I've relised that it was registry problem, acutally corrupted registry. W00t I thought, let's fix it. I've inserted winxp CD, and clicked R to repair, gues what? "BAD_POOL_CALLER" once again, I was like so the situation is: I can't repair/install/etc my windows and I'm using Ubuntu now. Installed wine, downloaded some registry fixers, none of them were working, so what do I need to do is to fix my windows registry with Ubuntu.
Anyone has any clue how to do that?
Thanks in advance,
Faifas

how to make the switch from Win32 -> Linux? |

Hello. ...I'm a complete Linux noob, so please bear with me.
I'm extremely interested in learning Linux, and was wondering are there any beginner books and distros anyone would recommend for someone who's coming from a strictly Windows environment? My background is strictly Windows - I do some vbscripting, system admin, MSI packaging, etc....
Also, I've begun doing some Perl scripting (Usuable with Linux/Unix, correct?), but I'm kind of at a loss as to what Distro I should be playing with.
Are there guides that possibly would tell you the Windows-equivalent Linux commands?
In my current Co. we use Redhat (which I do not have access to), but is that "the norm"for the rest of the Corporate world?

Version: SLED 10 SP 1
I just recently downloaded Pidgin 2.0.2 and got that all installed correctly (at least I think it's installed correctly). However, when I try to add my MSN, GTalk, and Novell Messenger account, I get errors saying that it can't connect because SSL support was not installed. I went into YaST -> Software Management and did a search for SSL and a bunch of SSL modules are installed. Anybody know why I'm getting this error? Am I missing a SSL module or something?
Thanks in advance!!

Just thought I dropped in and introduce myself. I'm fairly new to Linux. I always wanted to get away from Windows as everyday it drives me closer to being nuts...especially at work. I currently have my work PC set up with SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) 10 SP 1. It looks nice so far, but I have tons of questions that I'll probably be bugging everybody with. Hopefully, I'll be able to replace Windows here at work for me.
Later on, I'd like to replace my laptop OS with SLED, so I'll probably be pestering some more! Wah ha ha ha ha! :)Hopefully I haven't scared everybody away yet... <-- I love this icon!!

Running rtorrent in screen automatically on startup |

Hi.
I'm running Fedora 7 and I'm wondering whether there is any easy way running rtorrent in background (in screen, so I can recall it any time with 'screen -r') from startup, by adding a line in rc.local file or something.
I tried with screen /usr/bin/rtorrent& and that didn't do anything.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
