How do I get parted working? |

Okay, after having some problems installing parted, I finally got it to work with yum (I'm on fedora core 6).
But after the installation, I have no clue where parted is, how to find where it is, or how to use it since it has to be there!
Quote:Installed: parted.i386 0:1.8.1-1.fc6 parted.x86_64 0:1.8.1-1.fc6Complete!
[root@localhost /]# parted
bash: parted: command not found
So can anyone help me with this? My kernel version is 2.6.18-1.2869.fc6
Oh right, also, I recently updated my kernel version to that, and my old kernel version is still showing up in grub. How can I delete this? Thanks very much for anything and everything!!!

Hi everyone. I'm on my first linux installation right now, Fedora core6 on the first desktop that I've every actually owned myself. I'm 15 years old, and starting to get into the real computer world (kind of ...). I'm very interested in becoming fluent in Linux, and lots of other computer-related things. I've been in the IRC channel on EFNet a few times asking for help, and all the problems have eventually been solved. So yeah. That's me! Thanks for having an organization like this set up.

If anybody can help me with this situation:
I recently downloaded fedora core 6 and installed and did full updates to the system.
I usually use ultravnc via windows xp but when i tried to configure the default vnc that comes with fedora 6
i couldnt get it to work. In the terminal i tyoe in vncserver and it prompts me for a password twice. after confirmation i try
to connect to the linuz box via xp but i get only a terminal window upon conerction. I would like to see the Monitor screen
however i see realy basic terminal prompt
this the first time Using Linux i already looked in the forum topic,ut none of the posts helped me.
I triewd installing tightvnc and realvnc but neither would install due to a dependency error, missing xfree86.
Please help me set this up so i can remotel login to my linux box.

I have this old laptop, and I want to get it running using Linux.
Where should I start, what distro should I try?
I have tried these, just because I have them on discs: Mandriva, Ubuntu (the low mem version) and DSL.
Would Slack be a way to go?

Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 3945ABG |

Ok im booting off the latest Knoppix Live CD, 5.1 and I must admit - I'm a total linux noob :)But I have determination and hope that I can get some pointers.
I followed these instructions which I found from google after searching for "my card" linux driver
In order to use the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection driver for Linux you will need the following:
1. The binary microcode image, available here.
2. The binary user space regulatory daemon, available here.
3. The ieee80211 subsystem version 1.1.11 or newer.
4. Linux kernel 2.6.13 or newer. See README.ipw3945 for information on specific options required to be enabled in the kernel.
5. Wireless Extensions (v17) and Tools (v28)
6. For WPA you need a WPA supplicant compatible with the latest versions of the wireless extensions (v18 and newer).
The instructions however are really really hardcore :( I dont know how to use these files even with a step by step instruction.
http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/INSTALL
I really need help using that install guide, can anyone make it simpler for me? Under which kernel?/shell? should I be typing the commands, which commands should I be typing?
Sorry if this is confusing I will clarify anything I haven't helped with
Thanks.

Coming back to Linux. Need Advice, please. |

Ok, back in 2000, 2001, I was starting to use Linux at home for a few things, and I really wanted to get further into it.
Learning admining, server set-ups, etc...
So I bought a few books about it.
Well, things happen, and I got away from it, but now I am ready to get back to it.
My question is: Should I use the old books I still have, or go buy new ones?
The ones I got reference RedHat 6.1 as the new version, so that should give you a time-frame.
How much has changed since back then?
I know the GUI has gotten more developed, but what else?
I guess I should also say that I am aware of the Fedora Project and all that.
I have still followed the linux news, but haven't installed anything lately.
I have also downloaded the Fedora 6 CD set, so I am ready for that as well.
Thanks for any advice!
