I broke My yum fc6
Posted by: metalx - 2007-01-07, 08:53 PM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 6 - Replies (3)

I was trying to get firefox to play vids through mplayer plugin and couldn't find my mozilla folder...so I decided to try installing firefox 2.0 so I would know where the folder I needed would be - first problem started here: I couldn't start my browser so i removed what I did and voila! browser works again.

Now I can't get yum or the add/remove app to do anything now add/remove wont even start and yum just displays 'loading "installonlyn" plugin' and it just stays there for as long as I leave it alone. :/

XP installed need help dual booting with Suse.
Posted by: Maestro - 2007-01-07, 07:44 PM - Forum: Filesystem Management - Replies (1)

Hello all,

I have a 55gb hard drive, that currently has 2 partitions (rounded figures)

part 1 = Windows XP, 50 gb's big, 25 gb's used 24 gbs free NTFS Primary

part 2 = recovery partition 7 gb's big FAT32 Primary

I want to add OpenSuse 10.2 64 edition, I have norton partition manager to resize and split which I believe may be needed? I don't need any more room for windows so could put 20 gb's for linux but im unsure of what I need to know, and what partition type the split should be, is it even a split? extend? no idea!

Help much appreciated

Thanks in advance.

[Help]How To display or list my systemcall in fedora 5?
Posted by: iCc - 2007-01-07, 11:45 AM - Forum: Kernel Related - Replies (1)

Hi guys...

I'm new to this forum and to linux also...

i need some help here... i've been trying to make a new system call from my fedora 5, i want to try to list or display the system call. The purpose of this project is to modify the Linux kernel to record and report some statistics of programs after their execution. The kernel will provide a system call, which takes the name of a program as a parameter and reports the following statistics for the given program assigned by the user. In other words, a tool reporting the statistics of any running program specified by users can be implemented through your new system call.

1. the program name

2. the CPU time consumed during the execution

3. the number of files, if any, and their total size opened to read during the execution

4. the number of child processes, if any, created for the program during the execution.

5. the number of context switch performed for the program during the execution

But i still can't make it... well i'm really newbie to this linux...

can somebody help me with a tutorial?

thanks in advance...

Regards,

iCc

no more core, no more extras ?
Posted by: anyweb - 2007-01-06, 12:33 AM - Forum: Fedora 7 - No Replies

story > http://www.linux-watch.com/news/NS9625273807.html

Quote:Jan. 05, 2007

Red Hat's engineer and Fedora Project board member, Bill Nottingham, announced on the Fedora developer's list on Jan. 4 that, "There will be no more releases of Fedora Core or Fedora Extras." Instead, Core and Extras will be merged together.

Spread the word:

digg this story

"Starting with Fedora 7, there is no more Core, and no more Extras; there is only Fedora. One single repository, built in the community on open source tools, assembled into whatever spins the Fedora community desires," wrote Nottingham.

Fedora Core is, as the name indicates, the central part of the operating system. Fedora Extras was a software package collage that complemented Fedora Core. For example, the Linux kernel and the Apache Web servers were clearly Core elements, while games and hardware specific tuning widgets were considered to be perfect for Extras.

Exactly how Red Hat Inc. and the Fedora Project will merge Core and Extras has yet to be worked out. "There's a lot of work to be done, and we're looking for help. What's left of the Core Steering Committee is going to work with the Fedora Board and FESCO to figure out just how this new combined repository is going to be governed and managed," said Nottingham.

These integration problems aren't slowing down the release plans for Fedora 7 however. Fedora 7 Test 1 Release is scheduled for Jan. 30. If all goes well Fedora 7 will be released to the general public on Apr. 26.

This new release will include a live CD version of Fedora, WiFi improvements including firmware support, encrypted file systems support, and overall performance improvements.

  Two XPs and a Linux
Posted by: yonyemg - 2007-01-05, 08:28 AM - Forum: Filesystem Management - Replies (2)

Hi all

I am a real noob so please help me. I was wondering if I can configure my machine to select between two versions of windows XP (Jap and Eng) and a Red Hat Linux 9.

Currently, my machine has only Japanese version of XP installed (pre-installed) but I wanted to add English version(usability) as well and, of course, a Red Hat for my black Baby.

Windows XP already has support for dual booting between different version of windows(Boot.ini? :/ ) and from what I've read Red Hat 9 can be configured to boot between Linux and windows. So, can it be configured like.

1. Select between Linux and DOS (windows) at first boot-up

2. Then Select between two windows installations, if windows was selected at the first boot-up

or

Display all three partitions at the first boot-up

Since I'am a noob , the simpler the better.

Thanks in advance.

Note : I've already rearrange the partitions to free space for English version of XP and Red Hat.

Hey peepz!

Is it possible to boot linux from an external HD, even if the PC I'm using doesn't support booting from USB devices?

If so, how is it done?

Here is a screenshot that I dug up from an old match. The sad part is that one of my best buddies was trying his best!! And he is a GREAT Player... This was on my Cutting Edge FX5600 Nvidia card with a whopping 24-38 FPS at 1280x1024. The funniest part about this is that he picked the same map over to try and avenge his victory, but he lost another not so crushing defeat! :P

Man I wish I had more time on my hands to still play. I do have some games loaded on my newer rig, but there doesn't seem to be enough time in the day!!

long term fedora support to be cancelled
Posted by: anyweb - 2007-01-03, 12:42 PM - Forum: Fedora - Replies (2)

Quote:Volunteers are calling it quits on a project called Fedora Legacy to provide long-term support for Red Hat's hobbyist-oriented Fedora version of Linux. "The Fedora Legacy project is in the process of shutting down," said project organizers Jesse Keating and David Eisenstein in a Fedora Legacy mailing list posting Friday. The organizers didn't provide a specific reason for the decision, but a lack of contributions from outside programmers contributed, Keating said in a separate mailing list posting.

  Adaptec 1420SA Img
Posted by: costabunny - 2007-01-02, 06:37 PM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 6 - Replies (1)

Hi

I have an adaptec 1420SA in PCIX and want to install FC6 x86_64 on the spare 20Gb partition. My problem is I am unable to find an img for this distro. There are several for RHEL 3,4 suse etc but none I can find for FC (of any version to be honest)

Can anyone help me with this? This will be the first time I have installed Fedora on a non-standard drive (my other linux box has an IDE disk so its not an issue).

please please help (desperately trying to do this one without resorting to the unix sys-ads at work - its a proving thing...)

thanks
