Installing new CentOS (By a Windows User)
Posted by: Loll!pop - 2006-02-02, 03:09 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (3)

Hello:

I am going to install CentOS at home today on an old IBM Thinkpad 570E. I am a Windows user so please do not pounce on my very basic questions below. Just had a few questions for gurus here:

1. The installation *.iso files -- do I just copy the file as is to a CD, or should I unzip (or un-rar) this file first, and copy the files inside?

2. During install, will my wireless card be detected automatically? It did get recognized when I had Windows XP before, but it failed on FreeBSD. (I was trying to be cool, installing FreeBSD, but the system is for engineering dweebs with thick glasses!)

3. If I install KDE during the installation, can I skip X-Windows (X.org)? I wonder if it will install some useful things, or can I leave it out?

4. I want to use my computer ONLY for CentOS. Given this, how should I partition the system. There doesn't seem to be any screenshot which shows an options for noobs like me, something like, "Use recommended default partitions to use whole machine for Linux". Would appreciate some recommended partition guide. I am new to this.

5. Will the default CentOS firewall be enough, or will I need something like SmoothWall -- http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=5897 ?

6. I want to use my CentOS laptop as a webserver with Apache, PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, sendmail, and such. And I want to access it from my Windows XP machine to develop stuff. I use a DSL and I already have a NAT-type setup (accessing 192.x.x. domains). I would appreciate any ideas of how I can connect the two machines, wirelessly. Thanks!

.ep

Also, one additional question: how do I see CDs in CentOS? Will they show up in a file explorer type format?

  ndiswrapper install issuee
Posted by: ahuffman - 2006-02-02, 05:53 AM - Forum: Wireless - Replies (4)

Im a newbie w/ Linux and i'm using SUSE 10 w/ GNOME as my desktop.

I installed ndiswrapper from YAST's software management. I was able to load up my XP broadcom driver w/ the ndiswrapper -i command.

i typed:

ndiswrapper -m (for the cfg)

depmod -a (i dunno what this does, just followed wiki instructions)

modprobe ndiswrapper ( dont know what this does either)

modprobe ndiswrapper returned the following error:

FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found

I am logged on as root also. ( just trying to give you as much background on the issus as possible)

> I work as a helpdesk guy at a company, so I know how useful background info. can be :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated in getting this wireless adapter working. This would be the first step to making me happy in Linux. This is my first try with it, and I must say its nice.

  ATI Driver problem.
Posted by: modernbob - 2006-02-02, 03:32 AM - Forum: ATI Problems - Replies (2)

I installed ATI drivers in FC4-x64 and although they appear to operate they lock my machine up if I let DRI load. I have to comment out the DRI section of xorg.conf.

Section "Module"

Load "dbe"

Load "extmod"

Load "fbdevhw"

Load "glx"

Load "record"

Load "freetype"

Load "type1"

# Load "dri"

EndSection

If I run glxgears I get the following.

Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".

508 frames in 6.0 seconds = 84.667 FPS

480 frames in 6.0 seconds = 80.000 FPS

360 frames in 5.0 seconds = 72.000 FPS

I am running an ATI 9700 Pro card. The ATI control panel works fine but again if I enable DRI the machine will lock up as soon as Fedora loads the driver. I have looked all over the place for an answer to this one and can't seem to find anything definite. If anyone has managed to get this driver to work please tell me how or at least post your xorg.conf as I have nothing to compare this to. My xorg.conf is listed below.

  Loosing Network Connection
Posted by: noexit - 2006-02-02, 01:39 AM - Forum: Network Problems - Replies (3)

I set up a Debian box to do web/file sharing last week. I have Apache2 and Samba installed, and it's connected to my D-link router. I've been having problems with keeping it connected to the network. I'm running it headless and accessing it through SSH, but I keep loosing the connection, whether I'm connected through SSH or the web. Switching it off then back on get it to connect to the network again, and I then have full access. Obviously, I'd like to not have to do this. Any suggestions?

Compile new kernel for RHEL 3
Posted by: MelRay - 2006-02-01, 09:04 PM - Forum: Kernel Related - Replies (2)

Hello guys, been awhile since I last visited. I've been a windows weenie until I got caught in a rut with the new server's I'm loading.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX280 that I installed RHEL 3 on, and it does not have the NIC driver loaded into the kernel. RHEL 3 ships with the 2.4.21 Kernel. I attempted to find suitable drivers from broadcom(It's a 10/100/1000 on-board NIC) but was unable to load them. Anyway I read that the 2.6 Kernel has compatible drivers for the Broadcom NIC, so I tried to re-compile the kernel.

Long story short, I printed the document here for the 2.6 kernel and got errors on make install.

Kernel: arch/i386/boot/bzimage is ready

depmod: Can't open /lib/modules/2.6.15/modules.dep for writing

/lib/modules/2.6.15 is not a directory

mkinitrd failed

There is no /lib/modules/2.6.15 only /lib/modules/2.4.21-4EL and 2.4.41-4ELsmp

Help? I need to get this NIC running so I can finish installing other software, I also have to add three other NIC cards to it later. It's an IDS box, so I hope I can find some widely accepted NIC cards with built-in driver support.

Thanks,
