So my friend at college has been saying how great Linux is and i was already fed up with windows rubbish so today i gave it ago.

I have split my drive up. Windows for games and Linux for everything else :) I'm really looking forward to seeing what this bad boy can do.

some things i would like to do are:

Access my drive. Eg my computer > C:\ drive.

Place icons on my desktop ! This really sounds stupid but i don't seem to be able to drag them from the start bar to there.

Install programs. I tried to run a program i downloaded and nothing happend...

I think that will get me on my feet until i can speak to my friend.

  Problem with installing SuSe 10.00
Posted by: DigitalBlade - 2006-01-26, 01:45 PM - Forum: SUSE - No Replies

Hi there!

I am having a problem installing SuSe on my machine. At first, the installation would hang after it loads the installation files (and after all the small icons in the beginning of the installation light up). Then I realized it may be a problem with some USB device (I have a Logitech 4000 web cam and Lexmark 3150 printer), so I unplugged them and then this problem disappeared.

The next place I had trouble is when I was about to select the hard disk. It was showing "Evaluating ..." and in the background I could see it already made some choices - Shrink my 250 Gb SATA to 130 GB in red and all kinds of other junk under. At this point, the system hangs again. Now, I understand if it can not recognize SATA drives, but how would it know the size of my hard drive and more importantly, why would it make such decision automatically? I have a WD 80GB ATA set as primary master and that's where I want the installation. the SATA is my storage space.

Anybody knows why this would happen?

  OpenSuSE 10.0
Posted by: msnthrp - 2006-01-26, 03:54 AM - Forum: SUSE - No Replies

I am having problems with OpenSuSE 10.0 playing .wmv files. I get a lot of .wmv videos from my friends who are still devoted to the Dark Side and it is annoying to not be able to play them within the browser.

SuSE 10.0 defaults to Kaffiene as the video player and the the help section says to download the "essentials" from the MPlayer website, untar them, and put them in /usr/lib/win32. Done that, didn't work. Kaffiene uses xine as a backend so I also put them in to /usr/lib/xine/codecs, still nothing but I was able to see that the ones I downloaded were picked up by xine in the plugins section, so they are being seen. I took some dlls from a windows box and put them into the same places, nothing.

I have followed every instruction I can find in the xine, kaffiene, and MPlayer help files and nothing has worked. I can find nothing wrong with the permissions and all the files have been made executable with chmod -R a+x.

One other problem. Tried to do a "updatedb --prunepaths=/home and bash came back with unrecognized command. Locate gave the same answer. Both have worked on previous distributions and both commands are listed in my bash (deadtree) manual.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, so I been playing with photoshop using cxoffice... I took a wallpaper i had and used the following tutorial to cut the toon girl from the actual image... http://www.graphicmentor.com/tutorials/quickmask/index.php

Here is the original image:
