Turn on/off monitor with server
Posted by: DS-Patrick - 2006-01-25, 05:01 PM - Forum: Xorg Problems - Replies (4)

Perhaps some Linux experts can help with this one...

Is is possible, using the built-in power management in SUSE, to turn the monitor on and off at predetermined times? Ideally, this would be done via using server time (ie screens turn on at 1:00pm and turn off at 2:00am).

As an alternative, is possible to configure Suse to do the same thing without the server?

Thanks for any info, I know this is kind of a strange question.

Thanks!

  Make!?
Posted by: donuts - 2006-01-24, 11:38 AM - Forum: Ubuntu - Replies (2)

hello all,

I've installed ubuntu (my first steps in linux after a false start 4 years ago) and it's nice... all is easy

but i can't seem to figure out how to install stuff that isn't in the package list:

I've been looking around, and everywhere people say make this and make that... but my ubuntu "can't" make, so I installed make from the package list, but it returns errors everytime...

what should I do/install to get it working (btw I'm on the powerpc version)

Kernel 2.6.15 + ATI Drivers = No worky
Posted by: OVERKILL - 2006-01-24, 09:05 AM - Forum: Kernel Related - Replies (2)

Well, after a fun bit of playing around this afternoon, I discovered that my newly compiled 2.6.15-gentoo-r1 kernel doesn't work with even the latest 8.21.7 FGLRX driver. This was an issue brought to head with the previous 8.20 driver release (at which point the 2.6.15 kernel was not yet final) and there have been a few "patches" but since they were not applied to the latest final driver release (8.21.7) I'm assuming there is a bit more to it than what the patch addresses.

Basically, the problem is this: On exiting X, the computer will hard-lock, or, if you are lucky like me, it will hard-lock halfway through your user login. So, after reverting to my previous ATI driver and it still did it, I rolled back to my previous kernel (2.6.14-gentoo-r5) and installed the new driver and everything works beautifully, so its obviously an issue between 2.6.15 and the ATI drivers.

A quick search on the rage3d forums linux section yields similar experiences to my own, when ATI officially addresses this issue, I will post an update.

  Printer sharing
Posted by: Sirrius - 2006-01-23, 03:19 PM - Forum: SUSE - Replies (3)

Hello, I have been having a difficult time getting my xp-home to work with samba. Come to find out XP-home is not wired to work with samba, from what I have found out by googling. All I want to do is share the printer on my linux box(suse 9.2) with xp-home. Is this going to be impossible with xp-home?

If not I would really like to know the trick.

Also, is there a way I can remote into suse from xp-home. I would like to run an app on suse from xp-home.

Thanks for your advice.

This week my brand new Dell Latitude D610 arrived: 1.73GHz Pentium M 740, 2x512MB DDR2 533MHz, 60GB SATA, 14" SXGA+, WLAN, Bluetooth, ... ! Of course I instantly installed my favorite distribution on it, namely Fedora Core ... haha just kidding, Gentoo of course. :)

I've attached a screenshot below. The following software is used on the picture:

 • Fluxbox

 • Conky

 • Aterm

 • irssi

Enjoy. :)
