Remote local transfers time out. |

I have recently replaced Slackware Linux 10.1 with 13.1 and I am experiencing a local remote networking issue over FTP. When I am transfering data over a local route, whether it is to or from the server, the connection stops - all data transfer drops to 0.0k/sec, and even SSH locks out remote access when this occurs. I can still use the local machine in all its functions, but I cannot reconnect via FTP or SSH until I reboot the server.
I have tried to find a reason why this is occuring and I cannot. Transfer speeds are relatively healthy - 50-65 megabytes per second writing to the server and 60-90 megabytes per second reading data from it. If I throttle the transfer speed, it still times out regardless.
My local backup dumps over FTP to the server without locking up. I can retrieve from the FTP through the backup software as well without an issue. Yet still, direct FTP transfer using FlashFXP to ProFTP drops and locks out remote connections.
The only error I can find is in the ProFTPD log:
Jul 09 18:10:32 raven proftpd[1911] localhost (192.168.x.x[192.168.x.x]): USER <hiddenuser>: Login successful.
Jul 09 18:29:00 raven proftpd[1911] localhost (192.168.x.x[192.168.x.x]): sendfile transmission aborted
Jul 09 18:29:31 raven proftpd[1911] localhost (192.168.x.x[192.168.x.x]): notice: user <hiddenuser>: aborting transfer: Unknown error 4294967295
Jul 09 18:31:29 raven proftpd[1911] localhost (192.168.x.x[192.168.x.x]): Client session idle timeout, disconnected
Jul 09 18:31:29 raven proftpd[1911] localhost (192.168.x.x[192.168.x.x]): FTP session closed.
This error appears in the logs prior to locking out remote access, but I have yet to find out what the flux is causing it!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

pgp encryption |

I just came across a topic I never really thought much of, but then I started playing around
with it and it was quite fun. I now have my thunderbird setup using pgp encryption, so I can
send encrypted emails. I thought it was quite fun to play with, I mostly understand it now.
I thought of making a how to here but the explanation/how to I found on the internet couldn't have
been written better in my opinion that is. Check it here
I'm just wondering how many people here use pgp encryption?

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to get with a group of Linux people that can help me get with this OS. I am an IT Guy, but I started taking class at ITT to get an actual degree and this quarter I have my fist Linux class. So I have a administrator level of knowledge when it comes to Microsoft, and a user level of knowledge when it comes to Mac. When it comes to Linux, I am at square one: running into all the noob issues (like: Where is the Device Manager? & How do I get a driver for my wireless network adapter?).
Anyways, looking forward to chatting some Linux with you all.
Thank you,
Digital Daemon

Can remote login via ssh terminal but can't open volume in Krusader (via FISH) |

I have a wireless net between an outbuilding and my house. The ISP service comes into the WAN port of a router in the out building. A WiFi bridge in the house connects to the external router, the bridge is connected to the WAN port of a second router which creates the internal home network.
Inside the house on the internal network I have a Linux appliance with an attached USB drive for storage. It supports SSH but not FTP (and no repos to pull additional protocols from, so adding software requires compiling or hacking).
I have forwarded port 22 (soon to change) through my internal router to the appliance. From a workstation on the outside network in the out building, I can open a remote terminal on the appliance using
"shh <exteral_IP_of_inside_router> -l <username>", but using the same parameters and the FISH (FIle transfer over secure SHell) in Krusader returns "Error: Could not enter folder". Krusader (and WinSCP) connect to the appliances storage fine on workstations on the internal network.
I've also discovered that both SCP and WinSCP via WINE can access the appliance across the inside router, but with widely fluctuating transmission speeds and dropped connections.

I know that CentOS is just a Redhat clone with all the redhat stuff stripped off. I've read quite a bit of
different opinions over the internet when it comes to centos vs redhat. I'm just wondering what the opinions
and experiences are of the members on this forum? :)

Linux media/file server for the home |

Hello all! I'm getting ready to move into a new house and am seriously contemplating setting up a spare Dell box I have as a Linux based home file and media server. My question is this: Which distribution do you recommend most for this? I need something that can serve up documents, ripped movies and music, and possibly act as a secure gateway/firewall for my home network. It would be accessed by my PS3 and two Windows machines. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated :)

Quote:Clement Lefebvre has announced that the release candidate for Linux Mint 11 is ready for download and testing: "The team is proud to announce the release of Linux Mint 11 'Katya' RC. Linux Mint 11 comes with updated software and brings refinements and new features to make your desktop even more comfortable to use. Linux Mint 11 comes as a live DVD. A live CD is also available for people without a DVD burner or distributors established in the USA and Japan. The live CD comes with fewer applications, no multimedia codecs and no restricted software, making it fit within 700 MB and safely distributable in countries where the legislation allows patents to apply to software." See the release announcement and the what's new page for more information.

I'm quite a fan of Linux Mint -- it takes Ubuntu and then (the DVD release) adds all the non-free stuff you probably also want, like Flash, a number of video codecs and so on. Happily using LM10 on my desktop right now.
I don't think it will ship with Ubuntu 11.04's new Unity interface, of which I am a fan, though, so we shall see in which direction I go to upgrade!

small office network |

Hello all, been a long time. woohoo here we go,
I have volunteered my time to help a friend install and configure a small office network at a summer retreat. the network is this:
5 computers wired on 192.168.10. 10-14 connected to a linksys router (office)
2 computers wired on 192.168.20. 10-11 connected to a linksys router (house)
5 wireless Access Points wired on 192.168.30. 10-14 connected to a linksys router running dhcp for the wireless clients covering the property and lake.
its all in and works, now its time to reach out
There is one internet connection (1.5Mbps with 5 static ip) and I would like to share it 0.5 Mbps to each segment while keeping each separate and secure. it would be nice to allow segments to use idle bandwidth and possibly have the house at 1.0 Mbps and the other 2 at 0.25 Mpbs on demand for skype-voip-confrence.
I have 1 Linux box(Slackware 13) should it have 4 nics or 2 nic with 1 aliasing 3 segments ? how much has changed since ipmasq ? looking for some direction as to kernel compile and howto's that i will need to read. security is important but wanted to keep it as simple as i can.
is Slackware able to dynamically allot bandwidth ? or is cisco the way to go (there is a 2924 and a 2621 on the shelf) leaving the linux box for firewall. but then i'd have to read up on cisco programming too well i could get someone to come in and do the cisco stuff (vlans and shaping) i guess but tell me what you all think.
I have a few weeks to get my head around this so any help would be great.
Thanks.
