  POP3 mail server installation
Posted by: Ramanathan - 2009-06-10, 04:50 AM - Forum: Users and Groups - Replies (1)

Hi,

I am trying to install a pop3 server in debian 5. This will fetch the mails from the ISP to the local clients and should forward the mails from the local clients to ISP.

Earlier I have tried with Postfix combination with dovecat and fetchmail. And sometimes They worked too.

If you have any successful installation like this, pls let me know.

With advance thanks,

K.Ramanathan

Dell release new Inspiron 15n Linux netbook
Posted by: hybrid - 2009-06-08, 08:19 AM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Quote:Last week, all the headlines were about the advancements in the Linux netbook at the Computex trade show, and in all the hub-bub, we all missed that Dell also introduced a great, full-sized notebook at an amazing price: the Dell Inspiron 15n.

Or, at least, I missed it. Fortunately, I was given a call over the weekend and told to give it a look. While I haven't had a chance to get my hands on one, it sounds wonderful.

The Dell Inspiron 15n comes with Ubuntu 8.10 pre-installed. Lots of computers do that these days. What's different is that the 15n is a full-sized notebook with a netbook price-tag of $299.

How to run Windows XP in Fedora
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-06-06, 08:33 AM - Forum: Fedora 10 - Replies (14)

I wanted to have a Windows virtual machine that I could use on my Fedora 10 laptop, I only have linux on this laptop and i don't want to dual boot,so this required that I install some virtualization packages and to go virtual.

I'm documenting how I did this so others can learn and hopefully they will be motivated to try it themselves. Fedora offers two methods for virtualisation, one is for virtualising Linux (xen) and the other one can do non-Linux os's as well as Linux (qemu). For a detailed and technical wiki on this subject please see here.

1. Install the virtualization packages.

Open a terminal and as root do the following:-

Code:
su -c "yum groupinstall 'Virtualization'"

followed by the following optional components:-

Code:
yum install gnome-applet-vm

Code:
yum install virt-top

2. Start the virtualisation service

as root do as follows

Code:
service libvirtd start

then verify it's running

Code:
virsh -c qemu:///system list

you should see something like this

Quote:[root@localhost ~]# virsh -c qemu:///system list

Id Name State

----------------------------------

3. Install QEMU

as root do

Code:
yum install qemu

answer y when prompted

Developer Version of Google Chrome for Linux available
Posted by: hybrid - 2009-06-05, 01:12 PM - Forum: Linux News - Replies (3)

Quote:In order to get more feedback from developers, we have early developer channel versions of Google Chrome for Mac OS X and Linux, but whatever you do, please DON'T DOWNLOAD THEM! Unless of course you are a developer or take great pleasure in incomplete, unpredictable, and potentially crashing software.

How incomplete? So incomplete that, among other things , you won't yet be able to view YouTube videos, change your privacy settings, set your default search provider, or even print.

Meanwhile, we'll get back to trying to get Google Chrome on these platforms stable enough for a beta release as soon as possible!

At the moment, there are only .deb packages available (for x86 and x86-64), but if you have a Debian or Ubuntu installation, you should check out this really quite speedy new browser.

Set up a simple forwarding-only DNS server
Posted by: hybrid - 2009-06-03, 07:18 PM - Forum: DNS and DHCP - Replies (2)

I have absolutely no experience with DNS servers. I understand the principles behind DNS, but the perceived 'scariness' of configuring bind and different zones and such is quite a big issue.

I did want to do some experimentation with DNS servers, though, and I've found a very useful and simple tutorial to set up a simple 'forwarding only' server.

The tutorial is designed for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (and written by Red Hat), so it worked exactly as in the tutorial when I followed it on my CentOS 5.3 system.

  Emerging Improvements in Xorg
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-06-02, 06:56 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

FSM has an article about improvements coming our way in X.org. "There's more coming our way than 'mere' graphical goodness: Xorg developers are about to unleash upon us more performance and ease of use than X ever knew before. Not only that, the work being done now will allow older hardware to perform better and new hardware to be supported faster."
