  Emerging Improvements in Xorg
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-06-02, 06:56 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

FSM has an article about improvements coming our way in X.org. "There's more coming our way than 'mere' graphical goodness: Xorg developers are about to unleash upon us more performance and ease of use than X ever knew before. Not only that, the work being done now will allow older hardware to perform better and new hardware to be supported faster."

  System security in Ubuntu
Posted by: Micahd - 2009-06-01, 10:02 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (6)

I spend a lot of time online, and am uncomfortable leaving my machine up and running without firewalls, and virus protectors. I liked Zonealarm and AVG for the functions, along with CyberHawk for active monitoring. But none of those exist for Ubuntu. Any suggestions for what I can use?

Use Evolution to access my Verizon E-mail account?
Posted by: Micahd - 2009-06-01, 09:59 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (2)

Help. I need to set up Evolution to access the POP3 servers at Verizon.net, but don't know how to set it up. I can't access the account via the web (or don't think I can) since I don't think verizon has a web access server. Anyway, I'd like to access my e-mail, which until recently I got in Outlook (UGH. Microsnot broke, and I DON'T want to go back). Anyone help me with this? I'm running Ubuntu 9.04, and have full root privileges.

Asus, Microsoft Launch Anti-Linux Netbook Campaign
Posted by: hybrid - 2009-06-01, 01:42 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Quote:Back when the whole netbook thing started, Asus was king of the hill with a focus on netbooks with Linux pre-installed. Since they were kind of popular, it didn't take Microsoft long to start working together with Asus to 'port' Windows XP to the Asus line of netbooks, and with that, to other netbooks as well. The result was that Linux netbooks are now harder to find for many people. While Dell committed itself to Linux on netbooks, Asus has decided to just skip the first date and jump right into bed with Microsoft.

Asus and Microsoft have started a join advertising campaign promoting netbooks with Windows. It basically comes to Asus and Microsoft saying that netbooks are better with Windows - that is, better than netbooks with Linux. "Windows helps you easily get online and connect to your devices and services - without dealing with an unfamiliar environment or major compatiblity issues." Mind that the emphasis is theirs, not ours. Here's the teeth-grindingly cheesy video that's part of the campaign.

Surprise surprise, Microsoft being anti-Linux. Are they really that threatened by Linux on netbooks? Apparently so.

Linux Unified Kernel Aims to Combine Linux, NT Kernel
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-05-29, 06:32 AM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

There are several ways to run Windows programs on Linux (virtualisation, WINE) and vice versa really isn't a problem either with Cygwin, or better yet, native ports thanks to the Windows variants of Gtk+ and Qt. Still, what if Windows support was built straight into the Linux kernel? Is something like that even possible? Sure it is, and the Chinese figured it'd be an interesting challenge, and called it the Linux Unified Kernel.
