  Dell Changes Linux Netbook Policy
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-05-15, 07:47 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Good news for plurality advocates in general, and Linux fans in particular: during a press event, Dell has announced a shift in its Linux strategy, one that seems to contradict recent moves by competitors who are de-emphasizing Linux models: Windows and Linux models will be made available simultaniously.

Dell announced a new netbook, the Dell Mini 10v, which will come with either Windows XP or Linux. Nothing new under the sun here so far. What is new, however, is that both Linux and Windows XP will become available straight away; a change from Dell's previous policy in which the Windows XP model became available first, only to be followed by the Linux model later on. Dell said this won't be the last either; all future netbooks will be made available as a Linux and a Windows model simultaniously - without hardware differences.

The Dell Mini 10v is a scaled down version of the Mini 10. The Mini 10v is a "companion netbook", according to Dell, while the Mini 10 (without the v) is a "media netbook". The Mini 10 is 50 USD more expensive, but does come with a MacBook-like multitouch touchpad, magnesium casing (the 10v is made out of plastic), edge-to-edge glass display, and an HDMI port. The 10 also ships with the more powerful Atom Z processor which brings 720p playback capabilities.

Ubuntu 8.04 - Need Help Booting
Posted by: curbside - 2009-05-12, 10:19 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (5)

Hello, I'm very very new to linux but I've had Ubuntu 8.04 installed on my 2002 Dell for about half a year now and never had any problems with it, but last week when I tried to turn it on, it did not boot normally.

It went to a screen with a black background and white text and said:

*Starting acnac(h)ronistic cron anacron [ OK ]

*Startomg derred execution scheduler atd [ OK ]

*Starting periodic command scheduler crong [ OK ]

*Enabling additional executable binary formats finfmt-support [ OK ]

*Checkings battery state...

/dev/sda:

setting Advanced Power Management level to 0xfe (254)

[ OK ]

*Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) [ OK ]

_

It hangs on running local boot scripts and does nothing...I've tried doing Control Alt F2 to get the tty2 and logging in, then doing startx but i comes up with a lot of failures and errors (more info on this if needed)

I've also tried booting it in recovery mode but it just does the exact same thing

I've tried doing the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver.org and it doesn't work

I've tried sudo apt-get update and it doesn't work

I've tried dhclient eth0 and it doesn't work

I've tried sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop and it doesn't work

If you need information on the errors when i run the command i can give you it but i didn't want to list every error incase the command wasn't related to the problem. Any help is needed and if you try to explain something for me to to, please do it step by step and with great detail.

  KDE 4.2.3 Released
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-05-11, 08:25 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

It slipped by us, but the KDE team has released another minor bugfix release of KDE 4.2, version 4.2.3, a few days ago. Being a bugfix release, there are few user-visible changes, but still, there are a few things that stand out. "Online IMAP filtering in KMail has been fixed, KMail's system tray icon now reacts to changes to folder properties and updates the number of emails shown there automatically, and bugfixes, performance improvements and optimization in KHTML - painting and interoperability with web standards has been further improved."

A Peek at DeviceKit in Fedora 11 and Beyond
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-05-11, 08:24 PM - Forum: Fedora 11 - No Replies

Red Hat, which started the HAL project many years ago, has deprecated it in favor of a new initiative called DeviceKit. David Zeuthen, primary developer of DeviceKit, has posted on his blog about the work done by the Red Hat Desktop team in Fedora 11 for improving the storage layer in GNOME by taking advantage of DeviceKit. This includes desktop notification if your hard disk is failing, a desktop utility to handle RAID and LVM storage, a replacement for the venerable gfloppy, and many others. Look at his blog for a number of screenshots showing the details. "The GNOME 2.26 release in Fedora 11 will ship with a completely different stack for handling storage devices. The plan is to land all this work in the upstream GNOME 2.28 release and most of that work is done already."

There's Way More to Linux than Ubuntu: 8 Distros Compared
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-05-07, 06:29 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Yes, there is more to Linux than Ubuntu. As you are probably aware, there are many different types of Linux to choose from, even though not all get the attention they deserve. These are organized into separate distributions, (distros) and each one is different. If you've read our previous Beginner's Guide to Linux, you are already familiar with the advice we gave about choosing the right distro for your needs. This guide will shed more light on some of the more common distributions in use today and will cover the distinct advantages or disadvantages of each.

  Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring Released
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-05-02, 05:39 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Mandriva has announced the launch of the final version of Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring (codename Pauillac). This new version comes with a host of improvements and changes, as always. Fun fact: this is the first release reported to us by Anne Nicolas instead of Adam Williamson. For those that keep score.

Linux Hits 1% Market Share Milestone
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-05-02, 05:35 PM - Forum: Linux News - Replies (3)

Yes boys and girls, it's Net Applications time. Sure, their figures are flawed, and sure, they're misused all over the non-scientifically educated media, but that doesn't mean they do not indicate trends. One of those trends was a slowly rising popularity of Linux, which hit 0.93% market share in August 2008, only to sink back again during the following months. Well, it's April May 2009 now, and Linux has finally crossed the 1% market share line!
