  mounting additional partition
Posted by: eugene - 2009-05-28, 01:46 AM - Forum: Filesystem Management - Replies (3)

Hi guys i am new around here and i am very new to linux, hence would like to check with you guys and hope for some assistance.

Firstly i have a dell server running Linux enterprise V3, now i have a HDD of 146 Gb but when i do a df -h, this is my output

[root@localhost root]# df -h

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on

/dev/sda7 2.0G 1.8G 104M 95% /

/dev/sda3 190M 12M 169M 7% /boot

none 250M 0 250M 0% /dev/shm

/dev/sda8 1012M 33M 928M 4% /tmp

/dev/sda5 9.7G 2.6G 6.6G 29% /usr

/dev/sda6 9.7G 3.5G 5.7G 38% /var

/dev/sda2 2.5G 2.4G 16M 100% /folder1

from my fdisk -l

[root@localhost root]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 146.6 GB, 146695782400 bytes

255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 17834 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

/dev/sda1 1 5 40131 de Dell Utility

/dev/sda2 6 332 2626627+ 83 Linux

/dev/sda3 * 333 357 200812+ 83 Linux

/dev/sda4 358 17834 140384002+ f Win95 Ext'd (LBA)

/dev/sda5 358 1631 10233373+ 83 Linux

/dev/sda6 1632 2905 10233373+ 83 Linux

/dev/sda7 2906 3166 2096451 83 Linux

/dev/sda8 3167 3297 1052226 83 Linux

/dev/sda9 3298 3427 1044193+ 82 Linux swap

from this i see /dev/sda4 358 17834 140384002+ f Win95 Ext'd (LBA) which i found out from some threads here that this is the dell portion where you can create more partition from.

Now i am not sure as to how i can "cut" out more space from

/dev/sda4 358 17834 140384002+ f Win95 Ext'd (LBA)

to add on to my "folder1"

Thanks in advance, have a nice day

  Slackware Goes 64Bit
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-05-26, 07:52 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Yes, yes, Slackware has gone 64bit. "Ready or not, Slackware has now gone 64-bit with an official x86_64 port being maintained in-sync with the regular x86 -current branch. DVDs will be available for purchase from the Slackware store when Slackware 13.0 is released. Many thanks go out to the Slackware team for their help with this branch and a special thank you to Eric Hameleers who did the real heavy lifting re-compiling everything for this architecture, testing, re-testing, and staying in-sync with -current."

Red Hat Sues Switzerland Over Microsoft Monopoly
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-05-26, 07:50 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Linux vendor Red Hat, and 17 other vendors, have protested a Swiss government contract given to Microsoft without any public bidding. The move exposes a wider Microsoft monopoly that European governments accept, despite their lip service for open source, according to commentators.

I am trying to install Slackware in my external hard-drive (which is a Seagate FreeAgent USB drive) instead of ubuntu. I disabled the internal disk from the BIOS prior to the installation of Slack. Also formatted the drive during the installation and selected theLILO to be installed in the mbr.

Now if I select my external USB drive as the first device to boot from in the BIOS I get the following error:

GRUB Loading Stage 1.5

GRUB Loading, Please wait...

Dell Sticks to Ubuntu 8.04 for Stability, Costs
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-05-21, 09:28 AM - Forum: Linux News - Replies (1)

When Dell announced a shift in its Linux strategy last week, accompanied by a new netbook, many wondered why Dell insisted on pre-loading Ubuntu 8.04, instead of newer versions of the popular Linux distribution such as 8.10 or 9.04. BetaNews contacted Dell about it, and Dell replied explaining their rationale behind opting for 8.04.

According to Dell, it's an issue of keeping costs down and building a stable, well-tested platform. "We are trying to stay on a 12-month cadence to keep costs down, and build a stable platform," a Dell spokesperson told BetaNews, "A mainstream user does not care if it's [ubuntu Linux] 8.04 or 8.10 or 9.04 (he/she does not know what those are) -- she just wants it to work right and be stable/safe... Most of the Linux enthusiasts would not like to be so far behind (i.e., 8.04 vs. 9.04), but they are not our primary target audience for the [operating system] image."

Still, Dell won't be sitting still, either. They plan to add several features to their Ubuntu 8.04 installations over time, like they have already done by bringing the wireless connectivity in their 8.04 image up to par with that of more recent Ubuntu releases. Dell also plans to continue its strategy of providing its own update repositories, to make sure updates are stable and well-tested.

The Dell spokesperson further added: "Our goal is to provide choice and while we may not have been able to launch Windows and Ubuntu simultaneously on all of our mini platforms, we have offered [it] when it was ready. It's very important for us to make the Linux experience as simple and seamless as possible for mainstream users vs. 'Linux enthusiasts.'"

  The X Window Innovation
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-05-18, 08:05 AM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

"Over time, many people have complained about the X Window system; the X Window system, or Xorg in its current most popular implementation, is the layer between applications and the graphics adapter. It has some fantastic features (like the ability to run application over the network) and some shortcoming. One thing is sure: it has evolved over the last year or so, immensely, especially as far as 3D and hardware acceleration."
