I just saw it was a Fedora 8 screenshot I last posted. Seems like such a long time ago. I thought I'd add my current Fedora 10 Desktop.
Desktop:
edit: no longer hosted :(
With running Applications:

Firefox and Opera:

I tend to stick with OS X style themes these days, simply because they are easy to match up in all areas of Linux. (Gnome, KDE theme, QT, Firefox, Opera etc..) I'm running Gnome-Do with the Docky theme (Gnome-Do 0.80) and its by far the best dock application I've used on Linux so far.

Startup Script |

I am having loads of trouble in my efforts with getting a startup script to run. I am using SUSE 10. I looked at the skeleton script provided in /etc/boot.d/ and it's pretty complicated, so I didn't go with that. I just have a simple script that I want to run at bootup. I tried adding it using "chkconfig --add /path/script" but I get error "unknown service". I've tried everything imagineable. I added the script to boot.d, no good. I added it into boot.local, no good. I'm pulling my hair out here. This should be simple right?
The script is executable.
The script works when run manually.
All paths in the script are typed out.
Can someone please tell me how to make a script run at bootup with SUSE 10?

Ubuntu 9.04 Released |

Canonical has announced the final release of Ubuntu 9.04; also announced were the releases of Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition and Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix, but of course also Kubuntu 9.04, and Xubuntu 9.04.
This new Ubuntu release delivers a host of new features, as well as lots of improvements. Boot times were a focus of this release, and have been shortened. I've been testing the beta and RC releases for a while now, and I can indeed confirm that boot times have been shortened. Obviously, your mileage may vary. Suspend-and-resume has also been enhanced, according to Canonical.
They've also put time and effort into WiFi and 3G, broadening hardware support for switching between the two. It also comes with the brand new notification system, which we've covered in greater detail already on OSNews. For the rest, the new Ubuntu release comes with all the latest Free software packages, such as GNOME 2.26, (also covered before here on OSNews), X.org server 1.6, Linux kernel 2.6.28, ext4 support, and much more.
The KDE variant of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, comes with the latest KDE release, version 4.2.2, Amarok 2.0.2, the new Plasma-based network manager widget, the first KDE4 release of Digikam (it doesn't yet use all of KDE4's frameworks, though), Qt 4.5, and more.
Jane Silber, COO, Canonical, says: "With every release, we see Ubuntu Desktop Edition make significant steps forward in appealing to mainstream computer users. With access to the latest office productivity suite, support for Skype and Adobe Flash, and faster boot times, we're confident that Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition will see more people join millions of others and make the switch to an open platform."
Download instructions can be found in the announcements as linked to in the teaser.

The rsync utility is a mandatory tool for your command-line work, and you need to learn how to use it for easy, safe, quick laptop-desktop synchronization. This article introduces rsync and mentions several related tools, all of which provide easy synchronization procedures.

Hi. i have an old 800Mhz celeron gateway laptop with 192 MB memory and 10 GB HD. It also requires that I use
a sagem 8o2.11x card model xg-760n.
What kind of prep should I do if I decide to install Ubuntu linux on it. And would ubuntu Kill this machine. I decided not to put XP on it
because I know XP with service pack 3 is an old machine slayer and would bring it to it's knee's. I'm wondering if Ubuntu will do the same. It currently has WinME on it. Also I found alot of negative feedback about the xg-760n card with linux on google.
Thanks alot.

I am byte, which is a screen name I use when available. I also go by epsilon (and a host of older names that I won't list here).
I'm 16; I've been using computers since age 7. I installed my first Linux distro two weeks ago, Arch Linux. I've been having fun learning how to customize it and configure it... However, I'm still very new to Linux and I have a lot to learn. I figure I could learn some things here.

gNewSense 2.2 released |

Quote:Karl Goetz has announced the release of gNewSense 2.2, an Ubuntu-based, 100% free GNU/Linux distribution as defined by the Free Software Foundation (FSF): "The gNewSense project is pleased to announce version 2.2 of its 100% FSF Free GNU/Linux distribution. This is the second point update to the release code-named 'deltah'. This release introduces GLX back into the default install. This enables hardware acceleration by default, meaning Compiz and 3D games will work once again. Short list of changes: installer now supports two more file systems; GLX re-introduced; changed description of -updates and -backports in Software Sources; lsb_release output corrected; GNU Icecat repository available via Software Sources; Builder - substantial code restructuring....
Might be interesting for those that like to use 100% free software. Based on Ubuntu, so it's pretty good (as of last time I tried it). Only thing that can be an issue is hardware support, since there are no binary non-free components...

Tutorial: Build Your Own Linux Distribution |

PCPlus has a tutorial on building your own Linux distribution with the customizations you want, derived from Fedora, using the graphical interface called Revisor. "We're used to thinking of Linux distributions being set in stone. They're either KDE or Gnome, use a certain kernel and bundle certain applications. But this doesn't have to be the case. If you find yourself making the same adjustments each time you install a new distribution, it's worth creating your own customised version. Revisor is a tool that lets you do just this, and in this tutorial, we'll show you how."
