installing Yum |

Hi,
I just got a vps, running on CentOS 5. However, it's just on minimal install. Yum isn't even there. So I download a few .rpms on the net (by following an instructions online), install them.. Now when I run Yum it gives out an error message like below.
Quote:There was a problem importing one of the Python modulesrequired to run yum. The error leading to this problem was:
No module named cElementTree
Please install a package which provides this module, or
verify that the module is installed correctly.
It's possible that the above module doesn't match the
current version of Python, which is:
2.4.3 (#1, Mar 14 2007, 18:51:08)
[GCC 4.1.1 20070105 (Red Hat 4.1.1-52)]
If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to
the yum faq at:
http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq
I've been googling on this, yet no luck. Anyone here who knows what's the issue here and what's the fix for that? Thanks much.

Hello Everyone!
I'm new here, got to this forum throught Google, looking for an answer.
I'm installing a linux software that need to work this way:
You logon as root, start the installation. At a certain moment, the installation stops and prompts me to make a new logon (without logout the actual user), do somethings that it asks (needs to be with another user), and finishing doing that logout the second user, get back to root console and so click OK on dialog box so it can continues the installation.
The problem is that I can't login with another user (or maybe I just don't know how).
I'm running RHEL 5 with Gnome.
Everything is ok, but don't know what to do, to do this.
Anyone can help me please?
It's a little bit urgent. :(
Regards!

USE flags problem |

Hi all,
I'm brand new to gentoo linux, and I'm now experiencing problems with USE flags. /etc/make.defaults has no USE flags. /usr/portage/profiles/base/make.defaults has stuff, but i added the USE flags myself (I forgot that they tell you in the handbook not to touch anything there, but I don't know what which make.defaults they're talking about); thing is, in the handbook they say something like to go to the make.defaults part of your profile, and there are two make.defaults locations I just put. I don't understand the (problem) profile thing (did I miss a section of the handbook?). Is it a symlink problem? In the handbook, they say that the profile your system listens to is pointed by the /etc/make.profile symlink, but there's nothing in there that has a path or anything relating to another directory. Also, all there is in /etc/make.conf is CHOST and CXX or something (plus the add and remove USE flags I put in). I'm just plain confused. I don't know what I'm doing wrong here, I'm a total noob. Thanks.

Hello everybody, I just switched to gentoo linux after using windows for all my life (And having just a little bit of experience, but not much, with Debian and Ubuntu). A friend introduced me to gentoo; but he told me, and he's right, that I should figure out problems and all that myself googling problems and all that. He helped me learn things I didn't even have a clue about, and he gave me some helping hands throughout the installation. (At least I sort of figured out what was wrong with my wireless). But still, I'm a total noob, but I going to stick to linux because my friend convinced me to, and I want to continue. Right now I'm having a problem with USE flags; I don't know if I should discuss it here, but whatever. So, I hope I succeed in becoming a linux noob to a pro, because there are several cool things that linux can do, if you just know how to do it, that windows can't do. Thank you all, and I just hope I become like you guys one day!

How to install and config Postfix? |

Hi all,
First of all, I would like to express my joy in finding this site, since I'm a real noob on Linux and all that surrounds it!

I'm running a webserver with a family site on it, which needs a mailserver for confirmation of new members. I'm using HowTo as my guideline.
The setup of the server itself works fine, but with Postfix I experience nothing but trouble. That is; Postfix service won't start al all!
I believe it has something to do with LDAP, cos that keeps asking for a password which I don't know.
Is there a way to uninstall and reinstall, so I can try if I made an error in the process?
Pfff.... it's 86 F in my room, and it's getting warmer any minute thinking how to fix this!
If someone can help; please do!

Wine and Watts |

This is more of a technical note I guess.
For the past 9 moths, I've been monitoring how much wattage my computer has used. I have logged average, min and max. Allways on the same system.
When it comes to wine, it used to (when I started the logging) make sure the computer needed a lot of power. It used to need about 350W (peaked on 381W) when I ran games and other heavy applications.
These days, when I run the same applications, it averages out on about 180W, a lot less than what it used to be.
I'm glad to see the progress wine has done.

Ubuntu Noob vs Error 17 |

Greetings all.
I'm brand new to Linux and I've hit my first (technically 2nd) big snag. After googling around and overcoming the wonderfully entertaining "Error 18" villain, I rebooted only to get the much more wicked "Grub Error 17" message. I've googled around and there almost doesn't seem to be any single answer on how to fix this. I've tried a few different things and nothing's working for me. I can run Ubuntu from my live CD just fine but every time I try something to fix it, I reboot and ol' "Error 17" smacks me in the face.
Help would be greatly appreciated and guarantee you some good computing karma I'm sure.
