  shell scripts/hookscripts
Posted by: TeeHee - 2008-06-15, 08:40 PM - Forum: How Do I? - No Replies

Hey everyone,

This isn't really a how-to question, but I didn't see another place that might be a better place to put it. What I am wondering is if someone could explain to me, in noob terms (english) what a hookscript actually is/how it works. I've googled it but theres never a good, idiot-style explanation.

Thanks!! :)

VMWare tools Workstation 5.0.0 build 13124
Posted by: Drew - 2008-06-13, 02:11 AM - Forum: Kernel Related - Replies (3)

Ok so I am complete Noob to this (well not complete) and I have tried so hard to install VMware tools so my resolution will be better than 800x600.

So far I have extracted the .tar.gz to a folder I like.

I navigated to the .pl (perl) file I need to run to install the tools.

It starts running and I follwed the instructions that the "Read_Me" file said to accept all default locations to install. So I did that and came up with a question that,

asked me to find where the Kernel files with C something was, so I found THAT and typed the folder location as needed and got this error

Linux_VMWare_problem.bmp

IF you could give me some clue as the next step I can take, I would really appreciate it. (Oh i cannot spell really well either)

I'm setting up a webserver at home running Red Hat Enterprise and need a computer for it. What would you guys recommend? I would like something like the Mac Mini but cheaper. It needs 1Gb of RAM.

Thanks!

  Taking image of VM install
Posted by: amagab - 2008-06-09, 06:55 PM - Forum: How Do I? - No Replies

I am currently testing a Linux install on a virtual machine. Is it possible, and easy, to take an image of my install on the VM and install on a new computer that is not a virtual machine? If so, what image software should I use?

Thanks!

I setup Red Hat Enterprise on a virtual machine one my iMac and have enabled port mapping on my airport extreme.

I have set up a web server on my linux.

However, when I try to access it outside my network, or inside, I get the following error page in my browser:

------------------------

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /index.html on this server.

Apache/2.0.52 (Red Hat) Server at 66.xxx.223.xx Port 80

What am I doing wrong? How do I fix it?

Thanks!

Hi,

I tried Knoppix 3.9 on my laptop Compaq presario V6000. I get the first screen, asking me how to start, but when I press enter, I just get (after the message: Loading Linux) a black screen.

Anyone a suggestion?

  Installation problems
Posted by: jazp - 2008-06-08, 03:53 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (2)

Hey.

I decided today i wanted to install linux on my Dell pc, so i downloaded the Ubuntu 8.04 install CD, and had no problems installing it. However, i could only choose 320x240 and 640x480 resolutions, which was not satisfying for me, and trying to solve that problem, i did somthing wrong in the configuration, so linux could not start. I formatted my hard drive, and tried to install Ubuntu again, but now the CD boot screen did not show the menu, where i could use my up and down arrows and enter button on my keyboard, so i could not select the Install option.

I hope you can help me.:)

Linux on VMware on iMac - IP/DNS config?
Posted by: amagab - 2008-06-07, 06:34 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (4)

I have Red Hat Linux running on VMware on my iMac. My network is on the 10.0.1.xxx range but when I check the ifconfig on my Linux install the range is 192.168.2.xxx

Is that because it's running on a virtual machine?

I want it to be on the same network as my iMac....on the 10.0.1.xxx network.

How can I make it that way? I want to run the Linux on same network as everything else.

Help really appreciated.

Thanks!

  avahi problem
Posted by: Danotto9797 - 2008-06-05, 08:16 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (1)

Hi there,

Before emerging GNOME, I had to add some USE flags they tell you to add in the handbook, but when i save /etc/make.conf and emerge gnome, it says something about circular dependencies, and that I can remove them by removing USE flags which trigger optional dependencies, so I removed the avahi USE flag, and emerge gnome worked, but there's a part where you have to /etc/init.d/avahi-somethingconfd start, and I have to rc-update it so it executes at boot-up but then bash says that its not a file or directory, and I know that because I didnt emerge it for avahi support, and I need it. Also, while gnome was being emerged, i accidentaly hit a button near the space bar, and at that time it was downloading something, and when i hit the space bar, the download just stopped (on 75%), and right on the second line, something else started downloading. Did portage just forget about the previous one, or did it start the same thing over again? What am I doing wrong?
