  Best Buy Is Selling Ubuntu
Posted by: hybrid - 2008-07-09, 05:29 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

"It appears that Best Buy is now selling Ubuntu, both through its Web site and in its brick-and-mortar locations. Going by the release on the product page, Ubuntu has actually been available for the low, low price of $19.99 since May 6th of this year. It is being packaged as the 'Complete Edition.' While they don't specify on the site what version is being offered, a quick call to a local store revealed it to be Hardy Heron, the latest Long Term Support version. How did this development fly under the radar for over two months without anybody noticing?"

  wlan on slax
Posted by: JeanDamme - 2008-07-08, 09:32 PM - Forum: Wireless - No Replies

hi. having some problem with getting my new pc to connect to internet.

i am using Slax 6.0.7.

okay, it goes like this.

slax finds my wlan card, but doesn't find any networks.

when i give myself a IP in "Set IP address(network-conf)" i can scan for networks and i find the network im looking for.

but when i fill inn the network name, interface (wlan0), hook the 'use encryption' (and put the password in the KEY 1 box, and choose restricted) in KWiFiManager i still don't get no connection. i still get the box who shows all the networks i can connect to, but its not possible to push the 'switch network' button.

how do i fix this?

thank for all help.

Posted by: anyweb - 2008-07-07, 07:39 AM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

The 2008.0 final release is out! Code-named "It's got what plants crave," this release contains numerous new features including an updated installer, improved hardware support, a complete rework of profiles, and a move to Xfce instead of GNOME on the LiveCD. LiveDVDs are not available for x86 or amd64, although they may become available in the future. The 2008.0 release also includes updated versions of many packages already available in your ebuild tree.

  Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) development
Posted by: anyweb - 2008-07-05, 10:31 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

As the Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (8.10) development gets going, many people will probably be wondering what new end-user features they can expect. This article lists the top 5 new features. My Take: Nothing really exciting. I still shiver over the inability of the default Totem installation not de-interlacing my camcomder-derived home videos and DVDs because GStreamer doesn't support it, or no full A/V support on Pidgin yet, or something as simple as this which I've been asking for years now and it would probably take 5 minutes to implement.

Problem with screen resolution in 8.04
Posted by: Paradox665 - 2008-07-05, 11:44 AM - Forum: Ubuntu - Replies (8)

Okay, so I installed Ubuntu 8.04 with WUBI and everything was fine except for one major detail: I wasn't able to select any resolution above 800x600 in the display settings (they just weren't there to select).

I figured this was because I didn't have the driver for my graphics card installed, so I let Ubuntu grab it for me and restarted my computer, but all this did was restrict me to either choosing between 320x240 or 640x480 resolution!

Here's the kicker, though: I uninstall 8.04 and install 7.04 (once again, with WUBI) and my resolution is fine, so this leads me to believe that 8.04 could be bugged when it comes to my graphics card.

Here's my rig:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+

XFX Nvidia GeForce 7950GT 512MB

2GB DDR2 4200 RAM

250GB HD

Soundblaster SB Live Soundcard

Come to think of it, I believe I had Ubuntu 8.04 64bit installed, I'll install the 32 bit version and see if the problem is there. In the mean time, though, any help would be appreciated! :)

hello everyone in Linux-land ^^

I've finally let my class mate, who uses Ubuntu, persuade me into switching to linux

now i did a little research before hand to figure out which type is the one i'd like best

i finally landed by gentoo

i also read that it's not really n00b-friendly,but i'm not affraid of that xD

what i've been having a lot of trouble with is getting Grub to work properly (the past 3 days -.-....)

but that's a different topic ^^

greets from germany ^^

Can't connect wireless broadband in Fedora 9
Posted by: banjo - 2008-07-03, 04:20 PM - Forum: Fedora 9 - Replies (8)

I'm a noob to Fedora, and I'm having a problem connecting to wireless networks. The laptop is a toshiba sattelite and the wireless card is an intel PRO/wireless card. When I click the network connections icon, and go to 'Create New Wireless Network', I give it the correct SSID and WPA password. It then tries to connect, fails, and responds with 'secrets required by wireless network - Passwords or encryption keys are required to access the wireless network: "(name I put in)"'. It has also replaced the 10-digit passcode I've put in, and replaced it with a huge one.

Anyone have any advice on where to go from here?

  Making X permanat
Posted by: illidante - 2008-07-02, 11:23 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (1)

hi all, this seems like a very stupid question to be asking, but i am unable to make Fedora 9 boot up in window/graphical mode. I had to install it in text mode and i can invoke X with command "startx" but other than that, everytime i boot the computer up, it starts in text mode.

how do i make Fedora boot up in window mode?

  Fedora 8 audio driver Question
Posted by: Kumar - 2008-07-01, 12:25 PM - Forum: Fedora 8 - Replies (1)

I was using fedora 6 32-bit, it has Realtek HD Audio manager installed. The icon for this Audio Manger was shown in lower right corner(Gnome panel) of the desktop by default. Recently i switched to fedora 8 32-bit. I downloaded Realtek HD Audio Manager for Linux and installed it. Although i don't have any problem with audio, I want to ask why the Audio manager application is not shown in my fedora 8 Gnome panel? Have i done something wrong while installation of the audio driver or it is like this in fedora 8?

Thank You :)
