.WMA Support in Mandriva 2008 Spring?
Posted by: Dark Distorted - 2008-04-24, 12:01 AM - Forum: Audio and Video - No Replies

I recently installed Mandriva 2008 spring on my laptop and have been trying to locate a video player that offers support for the .wma file type. i've downloaded Media Player with Wine but not even it works with the best success rate. Is there a different program or a site to get the .wma codecs for a KDE based program?

A real noob need help on FreeNX
Posted by: Rizer - 2008-04-18, 06:58 AM - Forum: Remote Access - Replies (2)

I am a newbie in linux and I am trying to use freenx to remote access my FC6 box (in LAN) in work place from my home windows box. My questions are:

1.To install free on linux, all I need to do is "yum install freenx"? Nothing else and not even downloading the package?

2.I cannot do port forwarding on the router in my work place, what can I do and what to fill in in the "Host" field in the NX client? I know both ext. and int. IP of the fedora box.

3.I did a "yum update", and it says "clearing bah bah bah/removing bah bah bah". After it is finished, it seems many things are removed, I can't even see the things in my panel.

I rebooted it, and it seems to be fine. I did "yum install freenx" again and it says "nothing to do".

I would like to ask is there is any data/program lose due to the "yum update"?

Thank you very much for any help. bow*

wireless problem Fedora 8 and broadcom BCM4312
Posted by: anyweb - 2008-04-17, 12:57 PM - Forum: Wireless - Replies (1)

hi guys, i've Fedora 8 installed on this computer and i setup the wireless card on it yesterday by doing as follows

after doing that I added a new wireless connection in system-config-network and gave it an ip address of 192.168.0.3

i then activated it and all was cool, for a while, after an hour or so (don't know yet) all internet conectivity would die, i couldn't even ping my smoothwall (192.168.0.1)

note: on this same machine using a dell truemobil 1150 pcmcia card it worked 100% so maybe a broadcom firmware issue ?

here's what things look like when the internet dies

Quote:[root@localhost ~]# ping www.google.comping: unknown host www.google.com

[root@localhost ~]# ifconfig wlan1

--- 192.168.0.1 ping statistics ---

12 packets transmitted, 0 received, +6 errors, 100% packet loss, time 10998ms

, pipe 2

and the only way to get it up again is to go into system-config-network (neat) and de-activate/re-activate it

see below

  Fedora 8 and BCM4312
Posted by: anyweb - 2008-04-17, 05:49 AM - Forum: Wireless - No Replies

to get the above card working in Fedora 8 I did the following (as root)

get the latest firmware

Code:
wget http://mirror2.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2

uncompress it

Code:
tar xjf broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2

change directory to where the uncompressed files now are

Code:
cd broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5
cd driver/

add the firmware

Code:
b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware wl_apsta_mimo.o

associate with an Access Point called wireless_g with a 64 bit wep key qqq99.

Code:
iwconfig wlan1 mode "managed" essid "wireless_g" key "7171713939"

  Problems with emacs
Posted by: apth - 2008-04-16, 01:49 PM - Forum: Slackware - Replies (1)

Hey all.

I'm a complete noob to Slackware and Linux in general, been a Windows bunny until tonight.

Just installed Slackware on a spankingly new PC, and I'm having all sorts of fun trying to make things work, and for the most part I'm doing ok.

The one thing I haven't been able to problemsolve my way through is emacs.

When i try and load it, it throws the following error:

emacs: error while loading shared libraries: libXaw3d.so.8: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Unsure how to proceed from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

  wireless router and network help
Posted by: bmann - 2008-04-15, 02:14 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (1)

I asked this question in the other thread, but I see this is a better place for it. I am trying to hook in to my Belkin wireless router but having no luck. I've been seeing many folks mention that this is not an uncommon issue and often drivers need to be downloaded from the manufacturer's site? I went to the Belkin site and see a firmware and easy install wizard that I can click on. Do I use a wired connection when running the live ubuntu cd to download these items and then open them and follow directions a la windows or mac?

Thanks for the help, I'm enjoying this process, but it has its challenges. Peace, Bman
