Took the plunge with ubuntu |

After a week of getting up to speed about the bare Linux minimum, I managed to get a live CD up and running, loving it. My first problem, I can't access my wireless signal. I can't find a 'search for signal' mechanism or anything similar. Can anybody out there point me in the right direction? Thanks.

More basic questions |

Again, I'm just getting ready to dip my toes in the Linux water. I've settled on a couple of distros that I want to begin with, but I still have some basic questions.
I don't have any specific computer needs that require Linux. I run a small business and I'm interested in Linux because of the open-source and free philosophy. I also like to tinker with computers a bit, but not to the extent that I write code or anything like that. That being said, I need to be able to hook up peripherals such as printers, cameras, storage devices, etc for my business. I realize that I may have to put some time in at the beginning to get everything dialed in, but will I have compatibility issues in the long term if I run a distro like Ubuntu?
Also, I'll be getting a new computer soon. Are there specific new computers that do better with Linux than others. Thanks, Bman

Insert fedora core 8 (disc 1) for installing packages ? |

Hi
I recently shifted to linux...infact few hours ago. I am using fedora core 8 and I wanna use the gnuplot package. So I go to the add/remove softwares and type in "gnuplot".
I get the list I select it and then press "apply". Then after resolving dependencies I get this message
"insert fedorecore8 (disc1) " ----> I have two options OK and Cancel [:(]
I have the fedora core 8 DVD inside the DVD ROM.
p.s : I had lost the fedore core 8 DVD which was originally used to install fedora core 8. So I recently downloaded .img file and burnt it on a DVD and inserted it.

I'm just beginning to dip into the Linux universe and am having basic questions. I'm not quite ready to install because I can't quite figure out what's going on yet. To begin with, what is the difference between the different distros and the different user interfaces/desktop environments? Do all the distros have access to all of the different interfaces, and if this is the case, then what distinguishes one distro from another? Thanks, bmann

vlc won't sound |

I have installed vlc using the yum installer.
I got a acer laptop which has OSS installed. ALSA didnot work due to issues with ICH8 chipset.
Anyway, xmms plays audio alright , but when I start vlc and play the same file, it seems to play it but I donot get to hear anything !
Any idea how to tell vlc to use OSS?
thanks

I am using fedora 8 on a acer laptop.
I have installed openoffice from a rpm file.
I also got a rpm for desktop integration.
Everything installed without any complaining.....but I can't see any links for the openoffice on the applications menu.
I can start impress, writer etc from /opt/openoffice-2.0/programs dir but not otherwise.
Can I get the desktop integration done !
thanks in advance

configuring gstreamer properly |

I have installed gstreamer on my acer 4720 laptop which is running fedora8.
But I see the volume control applet with a red cross and on clicking it says :
The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control.
This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed,
or that you don't have a sound card configured.
You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the
speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu.
I have both alsa and oss installed on my system. Alsa didnot work with my ICH8 sound chip so I used oss.
Read somewhere that gstreamer doesn't support oss. How to solve the problem.
I am unable to adjust the volume of the sound when I use the oss plugin with xmms.
thanks in advance

mount different drives for different user |

Hi everyone,
I have a question I hope you can help.
I have 2 PCs, 1 running Windows and the other running SuSe Linux 9. Both PCs are connected through a LAN. I have different users using the Linux and I would like to mount their respective drives (located in the Windows PC) whenever they log on. This means that when user1 logs in, his drives will be mounted. The drives will be unmounted once he logs off. The mounting and un-mounting should be done automatically.
May I know how I can achieve this? Many thanks in advance.
