I have installed Linux mint on a Lenovo system (IBM) with an L192 tft monitor and would like to change the resolution above 800X600 to 1440 X 900 which is the best for this monitor. How do I achieve this? This resolution is not listed in the /usr/......file. I had to uninstall W vista and thought I would try another distro, it's been a long time...since FC3
Thank you.

Wireless and Compiz-Fusion working in SuSE 10.3!!! |

Wow, talk about a dry board, the last three threads were started by me and span 4 months!
Well, onwards!
I installed SuSE 10.3 the day it was released and I haven't looked back, but I was a little disappointed in the ease of setup for Compiz-Fusion and wireless using NDISWrapper.
To get Compiz-Fusion installed, I first downloaded the One-Click installer (links to KDE installer only, Gnome installer can be found here ) from OpenSuse.org and (obviously) ran it. Immediately, I hit my first snag, and it took me forever to realize that for whatever reason, it didn't download any of the XGL packages or the BComp package, so I downloaded those as well. I followed the directions put forth at OpenSuSE.org and there it was! My only gripe is that after a short while (about a half an hour) my system performance slows to about 20% of what it is usually, and I have to reboot.
As for wireless in NDISWrapper, I followed the directions graciously provided by Andrewd18, along with his GUI-frontend to NDISWrapper and all was well, for the most part. In both my linux boxes, I had to manually configure when my wireless turned on (I set it to manual) and which firewall zone it was in (it's set to "all traffic blocked" by default, I had to switch it to "external zone). It also required a full reboot, not just an X-Server restart.
I hope this helps you guys.

Remote backup solutions |

Hola,
During my first few weeks at my new job noticed that their backup solutions are really outdated or are simply non-existent. They currently have a large tape library that is connected to Backup Exec which is meant to do backups for the entire server farm. However, currently this system isn't connected to the network in such a way that will allow me to backup remote servers. So, I have two solutions for that problem.
1) Build an ATM circuit from the remote locations to the local tape library over a private 172 address space. The problem with this is that the ATM link will only be ~500M and there are ~5 servers to be backed up via this method. (~$23K)
2) Build a SAN at the remote location and have the backups for the remote servers created locally to that server location. This system would use iSCSI over an existing Ethernet infrastructure and thus would be considerably faster than the WAN link. This solution would provide storage expansion and facilitate much faster backups. (~$20K)
I am leaning toward the second solution to this issue. The backups would be much faster and it would be way easier to recover files from a local server rather than a remote library. However, the only issue I am looking at is the variety of servers which need to be backed up. We have a combination of Linux and Sun 2.7,8 and 10 servers.
Do any of you have a setup like this? How are you doing your backups? What types of systems are you using/running? If you are using a SAN, what are you using? I am looking at the PowerVault MD3000i.
Anyweb, could you get me some information on the MD3000i or put me in contact with someone that can provide me some in depth technical information on it (maybe even you)? If so, please PM me and I will send you my work email.

Can *nix command dd clone bit-by-bit HD partition to DVD media? |

Hello -
Thanks for reading. Using linux live cd's, the dd command, and the new ntfsprogs package, I have managed to make a bit-by-bit clone of my Vista operating partition. This cloning was done to an external USB drive.
The reason I did this is so that I can reimage the Vista partition back to the internal hard drive in less than 10 minutes, instead of going through the mega-long factory restore process provided by the OEM manufacturer's restore partition.
So now I have an 8,756 MB clone sitting on the external hard drive, and I am wondering: Is there a way to now copy this 8,756 bit-by-bit to DVD media?
This would give me an optical backup of the bit-by-bit lay down, just in case I ever lost the backup partition on my USB external hard drive. Instinct tells me this is not possible because of the way optical media is read/write.
Thanks for any insights!!

Ubuntu 7.10 |

Ubuntu 7.10 was released yesterday.
I have tried it on a couple of computers, and here is what I have found out so far:
- I updated from 7.04 to 7.10, and I got a lot of bugs. My home made launchers do not work any more, slow response, non working internet, and many more things. I have read more about this, and this is quite common.
- I installed a fresh install on one computer, and the computer is running well.
- I Installed a fresh install on a computer. It runs ok, until I start using Firefox. Then the computer will hang, and I have to reboot it using my power button.
My tips:
If you are going to install Ubuntu 7.10, do a fresh install, not an upgrade.

Smart card reader |

Hey all,
I have the following smart card reader; O2Micro OZ711SP1 running with the 2.6.23.1 kernel. I looked on (http://www.linuxnet.com/sourcedrivers.html) which
provide the O2Micro Smartcardbus PCMCIA Smartcard Reader driver however, it does not support the 2.6.23.1 kernel because of the changes made
to PCMCIA.
Does anyone have any suggestions on getting this working?
