  Some direction
Posted by: murda - 2007-10-16, 11:11 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (2)

Hey guys, very eager to jump into the forum and linux! OK so first off i do have 2 distros in mind 1 which is suse 10 and the other which is ubuntu (leaning towards ubuntu). Is ubuntu a good direction for a noob ? Now at the moment i do have a dual boot with windows xp and suse , i only installed the dual because my hard drive is partitioned in two and i do want to keep the things in the smaller partition. How would i go about doing that? and the second thing im most worried about is i have no idea hot to install things . My main concern is getting my WUSB54GC linksys wireless adapter installed (id be able to get help while on linux instead of having to switch to xp for wireless to work). If i can solve theseporblems linux will be my main and only os woot! :)

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Demo - posted by Crusader - Monday Oct 15 17:37:07 2007

id Software has released the Linux demo for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, the multiplayer-oriented first-person shooter developed by Splash Damage set prior to Quake 2 during the Strogg invasion of Earth. Here's the rundown from the official ET:QW GNU/Linux FAQ page:

The files are available on the BitTorrent tracker and will be on the mirrors soon. If you have the Windows version already you can get the -update release and copy the pk4 files manually.

There is no full client yet, I need to merge some code, package things up and get it tested for a bit. Soon though.

An English guy was very ill and his son went to visit him in the hospital. Suddenly, the father began to breathe heavily and grabbed the pen and pad by the bed. With his last ounce of strength he wrote a note, dropped it, and died.

The son was so overcome with grief that he didn't remember slipping the note into his pocket. At the funeral, he reached into the pocket of his coat and immediately felt the note. He excitedly read it thinking it might be something he could recite during the service. It said:

YOU WANKER -- GET OFF MY OXYGEN PIPE!!!

  Clone captive portal server
Posted by: magikman - 2007-10-13, 07:08 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (5)

Hello,

This past week I started a new job with a rather large ISP maintaining their servers. One of the servers I have been put in charge of runs a captive portal system for a rather large convention center. This convention center has vendors come in and rent bandwidth/service. At this site I have two servers, one old and one current. As of right now there isn't any backing up of the current server, this scares me. What i would like to do is somehow clone the current server to the old and then use rsync to do incremental backups very early in the morning of the dynamic content on the drive. I was thinking of cloning the data on the HD of the current server via the use of dd or just tar'n all the directories. If using dd, i would just place the old server's drive in with the new server and dd the content to the old drive. However, if using tar and a custom script, i would just place the old drive in with the new server and tar the directories and untar them on the old drive leaving the MBR intact.

If any of you have ever done anything like this, please let me hear how you accomplished this.

Thanks!!

  Fedora 6 - Intel ipw2200
Posted by: richardjkeys - 2007-10-13, 02:09 AM - Forum: Wireless - Replies (1)

Hi everyone,

I know this wireless card is a frequent topic, but I can't seem to find a thread which suits my situation.

I recently installed a fresh copy of Fedora 6.

The network config screen shows my wireless card as inactive.

when clicking activate I get the following error:

Cannot activate network device eth1!

ipw2200 device eth1 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.

Could anyone give me some ideas suited to my issue? There seems to be an awful lot of threads concerning problems with this wireless card...

Thanks in advance,

Rich
