  FC3 Problems
Posted by: Synchro - 2005-05-20, 02:22 AM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 3 - Replies (5)

It takes a good 5-7 mins for FC3 to fully boot to desktop ready to go, also when I get to desktop, Mozilla, GAIM, everything goes slow, even Terminal and other things listed in the Applications list. I don't know what's going on, but maybe I have some things running I should, or I need to change a setting? Whatever it is, it's letting me down bigtime on this whole FC3 thing, It's really cool, and I like what I see and learn. So I hope I can get it fixed soon : \ Also I can't get theme's installed. I see screenies of Linux looking really good and visual, but I can't seem to get mine that way.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Have a good one.

  mysql 4.1 -> 4.0
Posted by: hijinks - 2005-05-19, 12:11 PM - Forum: LAMP - No Replies

here is a little perl line i had to do to convert a default mysqldump from 4.1 to make it import into a 4.0 server. I know there are options in mysqldump to make it 4.0 ready but i didn't want to re-download a 400meg dump file

Code:
perl -pe "s/DEFAULT\ CHARSET\=latin1//g" forum.sql > forum2.sql

just in case someone needs it.. probably not though :)

  Priceless!

This guy has my vote for best payback of the year!!!!!!! You gotta love this guy.

This is a true story about a recent wedding that took place at Clemson University, South Carolina. It was in the local newspaper. Even Jay Leno mentioned it. It was a huge wedding with about 300 guests.

After the wedding at the reception, the groom got up on stage with a microphone to talk to the crowd.

He said he wanted to thank everyone for coming, many from long distances, to support them at their wedding. He especially wanted to thank the bride and her family and to especially thank his new father-in-law for providing such a lavish reception.

As a token of his deep appreciation, he said he wanted to give everyone a special gift just from him. So taped to the bottom of everyone's chair, including the wedding party, was a manila envelope.

He said this was his gift to everyone, and asked them to open their envelope.

Inside each manila envelope was an 8x10 glossy of his bride having sex with the best man.

The groom had gotten suspicious of them weeks earlier and had hired a private detective to tail them.

After just standing there, just watching the guests' reactions for a couple of minutes, he turned to the best man and said, "F--- you!". Then he turned to his bride and said, "F--- you!". Then he turned to the dumbfounded crowd and said, "I'm outta here."

He had the marriage annulled first thing in the morning.

While most people would have canceled the wedding immediately after finding out about the affair, this guy goes through with the charade, as if nothing were wrong.

His revenge -- making the bride's parents pay over $32,000 for a 300 guest wedding and reception, and best of all, trashing the bride's and best man's reputations in front of 300 friends and family members.

This guy has balls the size of church bells. Do you think they might get a MasterCard "priceless" commercial out of this?

Elegant wedding reception for 300 family members and friends ... $32,000.

Wedding photographs commemorating the affair... $3,000.

Deluxe two week honeymoon accommodations in Maui ... $8,500.

The look on everyone's face when they see the 8x10 glossy of the bride having sex with the best man ... Priceless!

There are some things money can't buy, for everything else there's MASTERCARD!

  Networking 2 SuSE 9.3 boxes
Posted by: Todd - 2005-05-18, 03:22 PM - Forum: Network Problems - Replies (4)

Hello!

Although I have an extensive background in the Windows world, I am brand new to Linux. I have 2 SuSE 9.3 boxes that I cannot seem to get talking to one another. Both machines dual boot with 1 having Windows 98 and the other Windows XP Pro. On the Windows side the boxes see each other and share files. Each box can see its own Windows partician. Through Samba, one machine in Linux can see the other when it is booted to Windows. Both machines access the Internet in both operating systems.

My network is a wired D-Link DI 604 router/switch that is connected to a cable modem for Internet access. Each computer plugs into the D-Link. The D-Link is set to provide DHCP IPs. In Linux each machine can ping the other. So, I am reasonably certain that the hardware is functioning, and that I must be looking at some setup or configuration step that has been overlooked.

My goal is to have a home network where the 2 boxes running SuSE can share files.

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Posted by: anyweb - 2005-05-17, 03:07 PM - Forum: Site News - Replies (2)

dudes, as we are in 2005, i thought it's about time to have something cool added to the forums, so ive messed around with the code and added an RSS feed, its still experimental but appears to work fine

in FireFox, you'll see a symbol in the bottom right hand corner

(see small pic)

click on that and let it add the linux-noob.com RSS feed to firefox.

you should end up with your bookmarks updating themselves automatically as follows:-

enjoy !

cheers

  Fedora Core 3 APT Repositories
Posted by: mechtn - 2005-05-17, 01:23 AM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 3 - No Replies

When i install fedora on a new machine, here are the first commands i run after logging in to my new install. This will install APT (an app for installing packages and their dependancies) and also add a bunch of different repositories. Each repository has some differences in what rpm packages they host. APT is the most useful app out for easily installing software and keeping it up to date for fedora today. Enjoy!

These commands must be run as root.

Code:
# rpm --import http://ATrpms.net/RPM-GPG-KEY.atrpms
# rpm -Uvh http://atrpms.net/dist/fc3/atrpms-kickstar...fc3.at.i386.rpm
# rpm --import http://dag.wieers.com/packages/RPM-GPG-KEY.dag.txt
# rpm --import /usr/share/doc/fedora-release-3/RPM-GPG-KEY*
# rpm --import http://rpm.livna.org/RPM-LIVNA-GPG-KEY
# rpm --import http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/fedora/3/i386/os/RPM-GPG-KEY
# rpm --import http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/extras/RPM-GPG-KEY-Fedora-Extras
# rpm --import http://newrpms.sunsite.dk/gpg-pubkey-newrpms.txt
# echo "rpm http://newrpms.sunsite.dk/apt/ redhat/en/i386/fc3 newrpms" >> /etc/apt/sources.list
# echo "rpm http://download.fedora.us/fedora fedora/3/i386 extras" >> /etc/apt/sources.list
# echo "rpm http://rpm.livna.org/ fedora/3/i386 stable" >> /etc/apt/sources.list
# echo "rpm http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/fedora/fedora/ fedora/3/i386 os updates" >> /etc/apt/sources.list
# echo "rpm http://apt.sw.be fedora/3/en/i386 dag" >> /etc/apt/sources.list
# apt-get update
# apt-get dist-upgrade
