  starting PCMCIA before Eth0
Posted by: woppa30 - 2005-05-13, 07:17 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (1)

Hi all, I hope somebody can help me out.

I have an old dell Insprion 3500 laptop that is dual boot with W2K and Fedora Core 2. Thats not the problem, I know how to remove winblows....

In the laptop there is a Xircom PCMCIA 10/100 +56K ethernet / modem card. On boot up the computer tries to bring up Eth0 before it has started the PCMCIA services, and so fails. Its easy enough to sort out manually with a "service network restart" but a bit of a pain. Does anybody know how I change settings so that the PCMCIA starts before Eth0 ??

Thanks in advance,

woppa

  Slow downloads
Posted by: veritas366 - 2005-05-12, 01:18 PM - Forum: Network Problems - Replies (5)

Hi there,

I have had a post about this on the forum of my distro (ubuntu) for some time now but no one even has any suggestions for settings to examine.

When downloading files or using download speed tests such as available at testmy.net I found that I was getting very slow performance under Ubuntu. This, I believe is new and was not the case when I first installed it.

When I log in on Windows XP with all the same hardware the download speed is about double.

I have cable internet, through a router and hub. The router does degrade the performance but even when connecting directly, Windows XP is still double the speed of Ubuntu.

Even stranger is that if I boot up using the Ubuntu live CD, which allows users to try Ubuntu without actually installing it, the connection speeds are exactly comparable to Windows XP. So clearly, my installed Ubuntu OS has some setting on it that is causing this conflict and slowing things way down.

I don't expect answers with this little amount of info. I'm hoping though that someone can tell me what files I might look at to begin sorting this out.

Thanks!

  A Lesson in Etiquette
Posted by: P38 - 2005-05-10, 12:46 PM - Forum: Jokes - Replies (5)

During a good manners and etiquette class, the teacher says to her

students, "If you were courting a well educated young girl from a

prominent family and during a dinner for two you needed to go to the

toilet, what would you say to her?

Mike replies, "Wait a minute, I'm going for a piss."

The teacher says, "That would be very rude and improper on your part."

Charlie replies, "I'm sorry I need to go to the toilet, I'll be back in

a minute."

The teacher says, "That's much better but to mention the word ''toilet''

during a meal, is unpleasant."

Little Johnny raises his hand and says, "My dear, please excuse me for a

moment. I have to go shake hands with a personal friend, whom, I hope,

to be able to introduce to you after dinner."

The teacher fainted!
