  PCLinuxOS 2009.1 Released
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-03-12, 09:36 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

After two years, the relatively popular PCLinuxOS distribution has finally put out a new major release, imaginatively called PCLinuxOS 2009.1. PCLinuxOS is a release originally based on Mandrake (now Mandriva), but which has taken on a life of its own. The distribution has one selling point (for some, at least) few other popular distributions have: it eschews KDE4 (for now).

This new release comes with all the bits and pieces you expect from a modern Linux distribution: Linux kernel 2.6.26.8.tex3, KDE 3.5.10, OpenOffice.org 3.0, Firefox 3.0.7, Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, Ktorrent, Frostwire, Amarok, Flash, Java JRE, Compiz-Fusion 3D, and loads of other stuff. The pclos-gnome team has also put out its 2009.1 release, which is essentially the same except for the inclusion of GNOME 2.24.3.

It's interesting to note the KDE version included: KDE 3.5.10. PCLinuxOS is a KDE-centric distribution, so why aren't they focussing on the latest and greatest in KDE land? The team explains: "We decided to use KDE 3.5.10 as our default desktop as we could not achieve a similar functionality from KDE4."

  usb terratec sound
Posted by: gmrox - 2009-03-12, 01:03 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (4)

I have just acquired a terratec aureon dual usb plug-in sound card which works ok in windows xp but gives no sound in Linux Fedora 10. The instructions say the driver is in the Fedora Core. Should Fedora be able to recognise and deal with the card or do I need to activate the driver in some way?

  Ubuntu 9.10 Details Announced
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-02-26, 10:24 AM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Canonical's Mark Shuttleworth has announced the plans for Ubuntu 9.10, named Karmic Koala. Jaunty Jackalope isn't out of its cage yet (April 2009), but the Ubuntu team is already planning for 9.10, which will see the light of day in October 2009. The desktop side will focus on beautification and an improved boot-up experience; the server side will target cloud computing.

Fedora Linux 10 Nears 1 Million Users Mark
Posted by: anyweb - 2009-02-26, 10:20 AM - Forum: Linux News - Replies (2)

Internet News writes about a major mark for Fedora 10 release. Fedora remains the only distribution to publish it's statistics and gathering methods openly and transparently. In any case, they reached 1 million active installations of Fedora Linux 10.

Red Hat's Fedora Linux 10 has been out since the end of November 2008, and is now hovering around the 1 million installations mark. Fedora uses a system to measure active installations that check the update repositories in order to determine how many installations are in use.

When combined with other actively used Fedora distributions as of Feb 16, 2009, Fedora's counting method reports 12,188,598 Fedora Linux installations across Fedora 7, 8, 9 and 10 releases. Obviously, some of those have been updated to later version already, and might have been counted twice.

On Fedora 10 in particular, in contrast with adoption for Fedora 9 for a similar period, Fedora 10 is at 115 percent adoption (that is a greater adoption rate for the first 12 weeks of release for Fedora 10 than Fedora 9).

Linux Fedora to read/write all drives and partitions?
Posted by: Bakshara - 2009-02-23, 03:51 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (15)

I have a sata drive split into four partitions and they are: windoze xp64 (FAT 32), Linux Fedora 9 (native format), a partition for my games (FAT 32), and a very tiny slice for Linux swap. Then I have an external HDD (USB-NTFS). I have a dual-layer DVD burner (IDE). I have an internal HDD (IDE-NTFS).

Windoze does not recognize the Linux partition as a formatted partition. I am fine with that.

Linux can see all these drives and partitions, but can only access the data of the Linux partition, the DVD burner, and the external HDD. It can not access, read or write the data of any of the other drives or partitions.

I have told Linux to mount them and I am still not able to access, read or write the data.

Thanks in advance,

Bakshara the Linux noob!

  Installing Linpus via USB device?
Posted by: islax - 2009-02-16, 11:14 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (1)

Ok, I want to install Linpus on my notebook. Yes, Linpus, not Ubuntu or SuSE XD, but I got no Live CD.

I got no access to a DVD burner atm either, so I thought about installing it via USB. I downloaded the .iso from the offical site (linpus.com) and tried installing it via UNetbootin on a 4 GB USB stick and start from it via F12, but somehow it a) doesn't start (get a black screen with just a "_" blinking in the first line, my laptop running silent and no activity for about an hour) (with the 9.6 version) or it starts installing and gives me error messages that something is missing (with the lite version). I dunno, am I using the wrong program or is the .iso file known to be incomplete or is it not possible to do this via USB device in the first place?

And before you ask, I googled various times now how to do this but mostly I got a) what I just tried working or B) comments like "go for Ubuntu/SuSE/Fedora" etc : /
