Viewing and modifying data within mysql. |

this was a real experience, and i'm documenting it so others may also learn. (thanks znx and jy for assistance).
first of all, we will do all the work from the command line, so lets get to our mysql binary directory
in my case that's /usr/local/mysql/bin
once there, lets 'login' to mysql
after entering your mysql root password, you should now be able to select the Database you want to work on in this example, the database is called forums
now we are using that database, lets see what is in it (tables)
that produces a list like this one (yours will be different)
Quote:+---------------------------+| Tables_in_forums |

now, let's say we want to see what's in ibf_conf_settings, to do that we can
Code: select * from ibf_conf_settings;
great, if there's not much in there, but if it's big and you want to find specific info, then you'll need to understand the structure of the table
Code: describe ibf_conf_settings;
which will produce a list of colums like this
Quote:+------------------+--------------+------+-----+---------+----------------+| Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra |
+------------------+--------------+------+-----+---------+----------------+
| conf_id | int(10) | | PRI | NULL | auto_increment |
| conf_title | varchar(255) | | | | |
| conf_description | text | | | | |
| conf_group | smallint(3) | | | 0 | |
| conf_type | varchar(255) | | | | |
| conf_key | varchar(255) | | | | |
| conf_value | text | YES | | NULL | |
| conf_default | text | YES | | NULL | |
| conf_extra | text | YES | | NULL | |
| conf_evalphp | text | YES | | NULL | |
| conf_protected | tinyint(1) | | | 0 | |
| conf_position | smallint(3) | | | 0 | |
| conf_start_group | varchar(255) | | | | |
| conf_end_group | tinyint(1) | | | 0 | |
| conf_add_cache | tinyint(1) | | | 1 | |
| conf_help_key | varchar(255) | | | 0 | |
+------------------+--------------+------+-----+---------+----------------+
16 rows in set (0.00 sec)
ok, now you want to search it for a value similar to the word 'poll'
Code: select * from ibf_conf_settings where conf_title like '%poll%';
the % infront of and behind the word poll allows for different values before and after the word poll
so, you sift through the smaller results you have now, and want to see
in my case, i wanted to manually edit a poll value, and i found it was setting number 249, so to verify that we do this
Code: select conf_value from ibf_conf_settings where conf_id = 249;
that in turn displays this
Quote:+-----------------------------------------------------------+| conf_value |
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
| https://www.linux-noob.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2791 |
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)
so now we know it's the right value, lets change it to a new value (we will change the url)
Code: update ibf_conf_settings set conf_value="NEW URL HERE" where conf_id = 249;
in the code above, we use 'update' to update the table called ibf_conf_settings and we 'set' a conf_value to a new URL provided that the id=249
so here's the code
Code: update ibf_conf_settings set conf_value="https://www.linux-noob.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3201" where conf_id = 249;
that's it, all done.,
the above has actually changed the poll on the front page of linux-noob.com from it's old value to the one listed above
cheers

First looks at SmoothWall Express 3.0 "Polar" |

Quote:Smoothwall Express 3 has finally been released to the public after a few years in various stages of alpha/beta. I have tried (please read that as 'used/using') both the Grizzly and Panda pre-releases prior to this, so I felt that I had a good idea of what Smoothwall Express 3 final was going to be like but boy was I was wrong.
Smoothwall Express 3 has far exceeded my expectations, the sheer amount of features they've crammed into a 69MB download is unreal, and I hope to cover some of this in the article below. If you'd like to try Smoothwall then please download the iso (both 32bit and 64bit) from here and see for yourself. You won't regret it.

Dear SmoothWall users,
review here > http://linux-noob.com/review/smoothwall/express/3/
On 22nd August 2007 we released Express 3.0, a new stable version of our successful and long-running network firewall.
Based on the Linux 2.6 kernel, this is our first stable release in some time and has a record number of new features and improvements - including advanced level reporting, single click updates, email antivirus and support for logging IM applications. Other key features include a new 'purple' wireless interface, fast and efficient routing capabilities, detailed logging of intrusion attempts, firewall attacks and web proxy access. Traffic graphs also help users to monitor and optimize their bandwidth in real time.
The changes have originated from the SmoothWall community and the SmoothWall project team, along with a large amount of code originally developed by SmoothWall Limited for their commercial products.
To download the new version please visit http://smoothwall.org/get/
With Best Wishes
The SmoothWall Open Source Project Team

ok guys,
there are some problems with the server at the moment namely
the forums themselves are broken (you probably can't see it, but the polls on the front page can't change... and some other issues)
and
the hard discs in the server that runs this website are starting to sound very ill indeed, 4x125GB hdd's
so what I propose to do is replace the current box (ageing P3) with a more up to date p4 3ghz or similar with one or two 500gb sata drives for future expansion
if any of you can help., i'd be very grateful,
all I need is the drive(s) i'll supply the computer
two ways you can help, hit the 'donate to linux-noob' button on the front page (paypal, bottom left of the front page) or tell me you are sending a nicely wrapped new SATA 500gb hard disc,
either way you'll make it into the hall of fame for supporting linux users worldwide
right here
cheers

A few jokes for the weekend |

Heres a few jokes - enjoy!
Six Classic Affairs
The 1st Affair:
A married man was having an affair with his secretary.
One day they went her place and made love all afternoon. Exhausted, they
fell asleep and woke up at 8 PM.
The man hurriedly dressed and told his lover to take his shoes outside and
rub them in the grass and dirt.
He put on his shoes and drove home.
"Where have you been?" his wife demanded.
"I can't lie to you," he replied, "I'm having an affair with my secretary.
We had sex all afternoon."
"You lying bastard!
You've been playing golf!"
The 2nd Affair:
A middle-aged couple had two beautiful daughters but always talked about
having a son.
They decided to try one last time for the son they always wanted.
The wife got pregnant and delivered a healthy baby boy.
The joyful father rushed to the nursery to see his new son.
He was horrified at the ugliest child he had ever seen.
He told his wife, "There's no way I can be the father of this baby. Look at
the two beautiful daughters I fathered! Have you been fooling around behind
my back?"
The wife smiled sweetly and replied, "! Not this time!"
The 3rd Affair:
A mortician was working late one night.
He examined the body of Mr. Schwartz, about to be cremated, and made a
startling discovery. Schwartz had the largest private part he had ever
seen!
"I'm sorry Mr. Schwartz," the mortician commented, "I can't allow you to be
cremated with such an impressive private part. It must! be saved for
posterity."
So, he removed it, stuffed it into his briefcase, and took it home.
"I have to show you something you won't believe," he said to his wife,
opening his briefcase.
"My God!" the wife exclaimed, "Schwartz is dead?!?!"
The 4th Affair:
A woman was in bed with her lover when she heard her husband opening the
front door.
"Hurry," she said, "stand in the corner."
She rubbed baby oil all over him, then dusted him with talcum powder.
"Don't move until I tell you," she said. "Pretend you're a statue."
"What's this?" the husband inquired as he entered the room.
"Oh it's a statue." she replied. "The Smith's bought one and I liked it so
much I got one for us, too."
No more was said, not even when they went to bed.
Around 2 AM the husband got up, went to the kitchen and returned with a
sandwich and a beer.
"Here," he said to the statue, "have this. I stood like that for two days
at the Smith's and nobody offered me a damned thing."
The 5th Affair:
A man walked into a cafe, went to the bar and ordered a beer.
"Certainly, Sir, that'll be one cent."
"One Cent?" the man thought.
He glanced at the menu and asked, "How much for a nice juicy steak and a
bottle of wine?"
"A nickel," the barman replied.
"A nickel?" exclaimed the man. "Where's the guy who owns this place?"
The bartender replied, "Upstairs, with my wife."
The man asked, "What's he doing upstairs with your wife?"
The bartender replied,
"The same thing I'm doing to his business down here."
The 6th Affair:
Jake was dying. His wife sat at the bedside.
He looked up and said weakly, "I have something I must confess."
"There's no need to," his wife replied.
"No," he insisted, "I want to die in peace. I slept with your sister, your
best friend, her best friend, and your mother!"
"I know, I know," she replied. "Now just rest and let the poison work."

HOW TO SAVE THE AIRLINES
Dump the male flight attendants. No one wanted them in the first place.
Replace all the female flight attendants with good-looking strippers!
What the hell --- They don't even serve food anymore, so what's the loss?
The strippers would at least triple the alcohol sales and get a "party
atmosphere" going in the cabin. And, of course, every businessman in this
country would start flying again, hoping to see naked women.
Because of the tips, female flight attendants wouldn't need a salary,
thus saving even more money. I suspect tips would be so good that we could
charge the women for working the plane and have them kick back 20% of the
tips, including lap dances and "special services."
Muslims would be afraid to get on the planes for fear of seeing naked
women. Hijackings would come to a screeching halt, and the airline
industry would see record revenues. This is definitely a win-win situation if we
handle it right --- a golden opportunity to turn a liability into an asset.
Why didn't Bush think of this? Why do I still have to do everything
myself?
Sincerely,
Bill Clinton

Enabling Unpartitioned Space |
Posted by: d34n - 2007-08-27, 02:33 AM - Forum: How Do I?
- Replies (14)

This is my first hello at linux-noob as i have just recently joined but i had to sooner or later as linux is not an easy operating system for someone who hasnt used it before.
My latest problem, although i have to face is because of my own error, is that i cant use my unpartitioned space and so have ran out of space in the partition i have fedora 6 installed on. I set aside 10Gb for Fedora and was going to use the other 90Gb for two other partitions, a windows boot partition and a partition for all my data. The problem is my windows cd will no longer boot, funnily enough after i installed fedora so i have the 90Gb of unpartitioned space left and no more space on my fedora partition to install anything. At one point i couldnt even log on because it said i had 0bytes of free space left.
So to my question, how can i enable the unpartitioned space without reinstalling fedora? I really need the laptop for work right now and am quickly running out of space so i cant afford the time to format and install again.
Thanks to any answers in advance!
